Get French Football News is reporting that there have been discussions of Newcastle buying Lille midfielder Thiago Maia. Newcastle have had an interest in the Brazilian since last summer when they tried but failed to secure a loan deal.
As indicated by L’Équipe, discussions around the possibility of Newcastle United buying Lille midfielder Thiago Maia have occurred in recent days, but nothing concrete yet.
— Get French Football News (@GFFN) August 4, 2019
Last summer Maia’s transfer fee was in the €20-30m, however after a poor year in France for Lille, the French club’s asking price for the 23-year-old has plummeted.
However, there is a strange report in Le 10 Sport that Genoa have bid €7m to purchase 50% of the player. This is an unusual deal which we are not sure that the outlet is getting right. However, the Italian club does appear to be very interested in Maia.
In June, there was speculation that Brazilian club Flamengo were close to sealing a shock €8.5m deal for Maia but nothing has resulted from those reports.
With Newcastle still uncertain of the future of Isaac Hayden and having lost Mohamed Diame this summer, they may be maintaining an interest in Maia as a precaution for a Hayden move. We could use another central midfielder, though, as the team appears to be playing with three in the middle going forward.

Comment #41If we’re to believe the players and papers the club has been after Joelinton Jetro and Maximim for atleast 2 years.
It’s been said that the club wanted 2 of them last year, various reasons behind why they didn’t come.
It doesn’t look to me like Bruce has had any input on incomings other than to say “dur, ok”
Looking at the two managers one is a pragmatist the other isn’t, one wants to service the brakes and engine, the other wants fluffy dice and some alloys.
It’s a really weird situation and until the end of the season it’s going to be hard to say if this is a gamble to far.
Even if Bruce brought Elmohamady in it would instill a little bit of confidence in me, not in the player but that the manager was being listened too.
Once more into the breach

Comment #42So Munster reckons Rafa got luck with Longstaff, like he’d never heard of him and would have happily sold him to Mikton Keynes if it wasn’t for Shelvey’s injury or indiscipline. It’s funny mind that when I listened to that talksport phone in where fans, the commentator and Ian Wright was saying that Rafa would be a good fit for Arsenal if Emery got sacked, there was no mention of Steve Bruce as a contender.

Who put Longstaff in the first team squad and didn’t let him go on loan?

Comment #44Why would we need Maia when we have an abundance of midfielders ?
Gayle it was revealed has an long term injury that niggles and interrupts his fitness so he’s unlikely to be sold, although a loan might be possible. Just hope for his and everyone’s sake that the medical team can work on what the cause is and a remedy. Hopefully new insoles if he has flat feet of something simple like that.

Thiago Maia fits Ashley’s template
He’s young and on the fringes of the Brazil squad
Lille have tried to turn a pretty sensational DM
who was rated at Santos into a creative midfielder
which has affected his game.
He was bought by Marcelo Bielsa under whom he
flourished , unfortunately Bielsa’s successor
Cristophe Galtier isn’t the same class of coach.

A fair comment
Lobby had been loaned to Blackpool
Saivet to some Turkish club
Colback to Forest
Apparently Sean impressed the most in pre-season so was retained.

Rafa could of left due to the lies but not getting a bumper payrise may of helped. The Chinese team had their offer on the table n may.
Its definitely Ashleys fault but i get the feeling Rafa played on the hatred of mike to bail hassle free

There’s no doubt in most sane people’s mind that Rafa left because Ashley could not meet his ambitious demands for the club he had clearly developed a great affection for.
While we continue to hate Ashley, and he continues to hate us, we owe it to the team, especially the youngsters and the coach, who are in no way to blame for the fact that we have a clown as an owner, to get behind them from the off this season.
Forget about a top eight finish, but the team looks good for a decent cup run this year.

Comment #57So now the idea is Benitez was forced to play an academy makeweight against his will. No mention of monitoring said player over three years of coaching and preferring him to understudy rather than ginger Jack and the ethereal saviet. It gets better every day. Sadly there is an appreciable core of limp witted suckers it seems who will drink all this in.

You are right there.
I’ve spoken to some of my pals who are lifelong Liverpool fans and they were not surprised at the antics of Benitez.
Steve Bruce clearly does not have the tactical pedigree of Benitez but he will be straight and honest and put the club first something that many suspected that Benitez didn’t in private.
