Poll – What Will Be The Result In Newcastle’s Opener Against Arsenal On Sunday?

The season kicks off on Sunday afternoon at St James Park against Arsenal. We did a report earlier today about Arsenal’s incomings and outgoings as well as some of the fitness questions they face for this match.

This is a massive chance for Steve Bruce and the lads to get off to a roaring start this season. Though this is a very difficult fixture to predict.

It looks like Matt Ritchie is touch and go at the moment as to whether he will play a part. We do know that DeAndre Yedlin, Florian Lejeune, Andy Carroll, and most likely Christian Atsu will not make the matchday squad due to injury.

It could be debuts for some of the new lads though. Will Joelinton, Allan Saint-Maximin, Jetro Willems, and Emil Krafth get to make their debuts in front of the home crowd at St James Park?

This is what Steve Bruce said this morning about our opponents.

“Make no mistake – they were Europa League finalists. They’re a big club and have been for years. You always know it’s going to be a tough game.

“They are a big club that have threats at the top of the field. I expect them to be very good and they have had a wonderful window.”

We hope that the lads can give a performance that will augur well for the coming season. It is definitely going to be an interesting match to watch that’s for sure.

So how do you think the lads will fare against the Gunners?

Can’t believe Bruce left Henri Saviet out of the squad. He must have only just returned from the ACON. Was player of the tournament. Very poor decision. Bruce only went for Carroll to half satisfy the fans as we missed out on our top targets. We failed to get the Bordeaux winger in at the last min.

    2-1 the Toon
Luiz red card (VAR) and pen missed.
Two goals last quarter of the game from Joelinton and (dare I say it) Miggy

We can but hope. It’s all guess work.

Probably more like NUFC 1-3 Arse(nal). Steven Taylor jumps in from the crowd to give a handball in the box, Carroll runs on to lump him and then breaks his bone marrow in the process. SB pulls out an umbrella due to the rain and Matt Ritchie chins him before joining Carver in the carpark to headbutt people Zidane style. Half the crowd go outside to join the protest / boycott and Greggs run out of sausage rolls.
    True NUFC meltdown always possible.

Bruce already bigging up the opposition – Arsenal are very beatable, they’ve fallen a long way from top 4 and they signed one decent player this window ( we signed 2 ) – easy win

Think we have every chance of winning.

Luiz unlikely to play, Bellerin out and now news in the last hour Kolasinac is out due to some kind of security concern relating to the incident a few weeks ago.

Their back 4 will be very rickety hopefully.

Sokratis and Mustafi at CB, Chambers at RB and Monreal at LB. Very capable of giving them a rough time.

Hope Bruce has them fired up and hounding them, high energy pressing to get the crowd onside immediately.

    Interesting window

Lots of promise but we’ve been here before with signings like Cabella, Thauvin etc.

We’re chancing a lot on these flair players adapting quickly.

I personally think Carrol could be a shrewd signing if his deal is as low as it is stated. He does fill a gaping hole we needed to fill.

I’m just glad we kept most of our key players.

    Fingers crossed for this season.

I’m more worried about the Norwich game and I’m going to that one – we really need to hammer them – they’ve spent nothing since promotion do I’m expecting a big win but will take 0-1 and a good performance

That’s what I expect. ASM off the bench for last 20-30 to ruin them when they’re hopefully chasing the game at that point.

@ nicktoon re Ozil and kolasinac ruled out of game on Sunday. Strange one that, advised by security services not to travel. Something to do with the highjack situation a few weeks back and repercussions. Bloody idiots. Only in London.

Arsenal still a very good side. Defensive frailties yes but still difficult to get the ball off and keep it, never mind the attacking talent they. Throw Pepe in the mix, we could be in for a tough match.

Ok, I’m letting go of the huge disappointment of Rafa not being given the contract he so deserved. It was a disaster for the club, but gotta put it in rear view mirror now…

The new signings have potential. But my worry is will they (a) fulfill their potential (b) adjust to the EPL and (c) will the new players upset the great team chemistry, established over past 3+ years???!!!

Will this team stick together and not drop their heads when they go down a goal or two? Will they be capable of coming back from being down by two and win 3-2 as last year’s team did vs Everton??

    We shall see…

    NUFC 4 Arsenal 1

This is a great time to play Arsenal. I predict baptism of fire for Luiz, we will have too much pace for them on the break. Predicting bad start for Arsenal, won’t finish top 6.

    @Ketsbaia9

Henri Saviet was NOT the ACON player of the tournament. That was Ismaël Bennacer who also won Best Young Player & Best Assist.

Henri Saviet had a reasonable tournament. Nothing special. Which kind of sums up his NUFC career.
