Lee Ryder in the Chronicle has written an article with some comments by Steve Bruce about his plan to get new deals for five players. The five players identified are Martin Dubravka, Isaac Hayden, Sean Longstaff, Matt Ritchie and Jamaal Lascelles.
The Daily Mail had reported that Steve Bruce wanted to get five players signed to new deals a week and a half ago. However, they had Jonjo Shelvey in the place of Jamaal Lascelles in their report.
Steve seems determined to get the core of the current group tied down as quickly as possible. We think it is a great idea but we would also like to see Fabian Schar get a better deal also. He has just two years left on his deal and has been an outstanding player in his first year at the club. Hopefully, a new deal for Fabian is in the works.
Jonjo, Sean, and Isaac– alright, who talks to Lee first?
Martin Dubravka and Sean Longstaff need to get new deals to stave off the inevitable interest that will be shown in them by other clubs. Both have relatively new deals but were signed prior to them showing their current value.
Sean Longstaff signed his current deal in December before he exploded onto the scene and became an obsession of Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Martin Dubravka’s deal is the one signed when he joined the club permanently last summer after an outstanding loan spell. This past season he has solidified his standing as a top class Premier League keeper.
The captain Jamaal Lascelle’s current deal is also new but Steve Bruce seems to want to reward him. Lascelles will have been a big help to Bruce in getting the squad focused for the new season. Rewarding him with a new deal makes a lot of sense.
Ritchie and Hayden all have less than two years remaining on their current deals so getting them tied down to news deals should be a priority.
Isaac Hayden gave an interview yesterday lauding the support of the fans as the main reason he stayed at Newcastle after asking to leave last summer and again in January.
When asked about Isaac specifically this is what Bruce said, as he also mentioned the other players that he wants to get new contracts.
“I never want to talk about people’s personal circumstances but I think there’s been a little change in that too.
“He’s indicated he’s willing to sit down and talk to us.
“I’m delighted, of course.
“Him and Matt Ritchie and the goalkeeper and the captain, there are probably four or five we want to talk to.”
It would quite a masterstroke by Steve Bruce if he can get Hayden to sign a new deal. Now is the time to do it. In fact, this is the time to get all of these players signed up.
We would also like to see if Jonjo Shelvey can get a new deal though he is on massive wages and it might be a problem to get him an improved deal. However, an extension to his current deal would be something we would like to see get worked out. He too only has two years remaining on his deal. And he seems to just love it at Newcastle.
It looks like the process might have already begun as well. Steve Bruce said this about the players deserving new deals and that Lee Charnley has spoken to some of them.
“They deserved new deals which we need to tie them up to.
“I think Lee’s already spoken to two or three.”

Comment #1Good grief. Lee Charnley has spoken to two or three of them. The deals are as good as done then.

Comment #2This is beginningto look like an organised footballclub. If Bournemouth spent 60 mill and tied down players under a new foreign boss, les miserables would point to a well run club with a clever new manager who is working harder on fitness than his predecessor. But wait, its just us.

Comment #7Six names mentioned in the above article and i bet every one of those players wont be here in 2 years time . They will all be sold for PROFIT. There is no such thing as building a good team when Ashley owns the club.
LEECH OUT.

Comment #9That’s my team. 4-5-1 which turns into 4-3-3 with the ball. Hayden built a great understanding with Longstaff – need to keep that. Shelvey in front of them with less defensive duties feeding the front 3. Pace all over the pitch and it makes a change to have two strong creative full backs in our side. Team has real potential and a good mix I reckon…just need them to click.
Top 6 finish is 50/1 – just saying 😉

Comment #10WL Toon – Krafth – yes watched a few games. Strong, great positioning and can whip a decent cross in. Not the quickest mind. Much better defensively than anything we have though.

Comment #11Looks a very offensive team with pace like you say, but Kraft is not a wing back type of player. he,s a Dummett type of old fashioned full back. rarely goes over the half way line, so i would of went for Manquilo who has had a good pre season and has got much needed prem experience.I think Kraft will probs start though .

Comment #15Think there’s still the very real possibility that Yedlin may yet end up being moved on to a European club, and Aarons brought into the 25.

Comment #21Bit of a shame. I think we’d look that bit better again balance wise and depth wise with Aarons in the 25 instead of Yedlin.
Yedlin may be asked to compete a bit higher up the pitch, with Atsu, Ritchie, St-Max.

Comment #23Nicky, I know, they all look good on YouTube.
Bruce had Rolando at Shef Wed last season, he knows him well enough and didn’t include him in the 25.
I certainly wouldn’t drop Yedlin for him, different position, you want Rolando to play right Back/wingback?

Comment #26No, I think we have good depth at right back/wing back in Krafth and Manquillo, and we are maybe a little light by comparison with wider attackers. Yedlin is fine, but not as good defensively as he might be, nor is his use of the ball that great, compared to Manquillo, and probably Krafth.
if he is staying I’m wondering if Yedlin might be asked to compete a little further up the pitch, a bit like Ritchie, covering two positions.

Comment #27Nicky, I must admit, I’d never heard of Krafth until 3 days ago, Manquillo has been ok pre-season, but Yedlin lifted me off my seat more than once last season and he might be sh*te defending at times, but he’s quick and knows where to pick a pass on his day.
Don’t get me wrong I like Rolando too, but I just don’t know out of the 25 who I’d drop for him

Comment #29I’m almost speechless. Self proclaimed clever poster Munster Mag says we’re starting to look like a proper organised football club. Aye, most proper organised football club’s chase away a manager hugely popular with fans and a real drive and ambition to win things, with the CV to prove it and appoint a lower league manager desperate to manage in the PL again, not on merit but by being willing to accept a policy even his former lower league predecessor wishes he had said more about. Yep Munster, that is the sole definition of a proper organised football club. Returning to exact the same strategy that got you relegated three years previously. By gawd you’re clever.

Comment #30Yeah Al, Yedlin is very fast, and that’s a big asset, however his defense is a little suspect, and his final ball a little lacking. I think we are oversubscribed at right back/wingback now with the addition of Krafth, and a little short for wide attackers and in central mid. I think Yedlin, like Gayle, is in his final year with us, and they may not see out the campaign with us, and would ideally be replaced in the 25 with a DM and winger. Aarons still has the chance to become a first team player, but I’ll admit, it’s now touch and go for him, and he still has plenty to do, however he has the talent, and he is also very quick, and is still young. Just my take.

Comment #32Recent history and Ashley’s M.O. suggest all this is just another false dawn. We have had so many. Examples…. McWally is signed up and backed, but then fails spectacularly, Ashley does not act in time to save us from the drop.
The next false dawn came after Rafa stayed with us in the championship, he is backed with the money and given licence to sign the players to get us up, but then Ashley fails to back him and trust him once we are promoted, and we struggle to stay up. Next, Rafa seems to be being backed financially, he signs a supposed up and coming player for 12m, but is then suddenly denied the money to buy a premium cf, which he was clearly under the impression he was going to have a say in.
False dawns, scattered with lies and broken promises. I can’t see this being any different. I want it to be different, despite the fact we have lost a top manager, but if Bruce is in the relegation zone in October, will he be given another 10 games, or until Xmas, like McWally was? Or will Ashley act quicker and find us a manager who can break the yoyo cycle? I have my doubts.

Comment #39And for the record, I won’t blame Bruce if the new signings can’t elevate us to top 8 form, even though on paper the squad looks capable. The reason is because a lot of them seemed to be lined up before he arrived, and not many are likely to be his choice. I will blame him if he can’t organise them into a half decent outfit that can stay well clear of the drop, as the is certainly enough talent there to avoid relegation. Any manager worth his salt should be able to do that.
