Disappointing Second Half As Newcastle Fall To Arsenal 0-1

Newcastle came out unchanged to start the second half after a decent first half performance. Isaac Hayden would also start off just behind the two strikers.

A few sloppy passes resulting in a loss of possession would mar the first few minutes for both sides. But Newcastle would just not be able to string enough together to get anything going in this half.

Jetro Willems would come on to replace Jonjo Shelvey in the 53rd minute where he would eventually make his way to left wing-back.

As we feared, Newcastle were caught and Aubameyang was afforded acres of space to put Arsenal ahead 1-0 after tucking away an Ainsley Maitland-Niles cross. Where was the defense?

Dani Ceballos would come on for Joe Willock in the 64th minutes for Arsenal.

Allan Saint-Maximin– showed some flashes in debut

Then a few minutes later Allan Saint-Maximin would come on for Sean Longstaff to a roaring applause. He would beat his defender and whip an inviting cross into the box from the right but no one was there to get on the end of it before it went out of play for a corner.

However, the loss of Shelvey and Longstaff in midfield really made a difference as they seemed to look bereft of ideas and we couldn’t really figure out what they were trying to do.

Arsenal’s big signing Nicolas Pepe would come on Reiss Nelson in the 70th minute and Gabriel Martinelli would come in for Mkhitaryan in the 85th minute.

Newcastle lacked the urgency of a team down 0-1 at home and failed to really threaten Arsenal at all as the game came to whimpering end.

There were definite positives to take away from this game. Newcastle are still a work in progress and they need to get more comfortable with increased possession. They lack cutting edge though in the final third and that could end being a big problem.

They also lacked a bit of discipline in defense with and they played far too many wayward passes. Newcastle started extremely well but this one ended really disappointingly for the lads.

We’ll be relegated with this fraud at the helm. Those in the ground hang your heads. Complicit.

Went toe to toe with the Arsenal. Gave as good as we got. This team should be in no danger.

Critique: missing Yedlin and his pace. Team needs to gel and we’ll create more chances.

Joellington, Almiron, new guys look good. Dummett honorable mention as well as Ritchie, Shelvey, Hayden.

Shelvey going off really effected things, Longstaff is still working back to match sharpness. Almiron looked the most dangerous forward player and I think he could develop a good partnership with Joelinton who won most every ball that came up to him.

The big worry is going to be a lack of a creator in midfield, doesn’t matter who you have in attack if you haven’t got anyone providing for them.

Hayden was definite MOTM for me. Looks to be carrying on from last season. Was winning everything on midfield today.

Cyprus if we can’t make simple passes we have real problems. This was the worst Arsenal starting line up in years.

Joelinton best player for us together with Almiron and Hayden. Manquillo also good. Not sure why we got Krafth.

Against lesser teams we will be alright. Also liked Jetro though he should have done better at their goal, just waiting for the ball is not the right instinct.

    The goal is embarrassing.

Shocking – very poor effort and, not surprisingly, tactically inept – why we still had 5 defenders on at the end is beyond belief. For those who attended hope you enjoyed the ‘entertainment ‘ on show. Didn’t hear much ‘support for the team’ either. This does not bode well. Only plus was Joelinton, unfortunately everything behind him was sub-standard.

Longstaff and Schaer giving away too many balls, simple passes just too poorly hit or the wrong decision in Schaers case.

    Dubravka – 6.5
    Manquillo – 6.5
    Lascelles – 7
    Schar – 4
    Dummet – 6.5
    Shelvey – 7
    Longstaff – 6
    Hayden – 8.5
    Almiron – 7
    Joelinton – 6

Good first half with some chances and good moments of play. Forced Shelvey sub followed by Longstaff completely lost our shape. Poor second half in particular the last 25mins.

Really missed Rondons close touches and strength up top which I hope Joelinton can develop quickly

Good signs at times and lets go attack Norwich next week

Shelvey isn’t injured tactical decision according to sky, if it was injury why then go and take another CM.

Poor management, the subs totally unbalanced the team.

    Usual result against Arsenal.
Usual result from our first game of the season.
Difference between the two teams was Aubamerang, the goal scorer.
We passed poorly at times, and Longstaff and Schar were not at their best.
A loss to a probable top four team by the single goal – not a disaster.

Why, why does no one ever talk about Jamaal and his stupid shite marking, yes the pass to Willems was short and yes he just stood there and when I played you always went to the ball.

But when your job is to Mark Aubameyang one of the most lethal strikers in the Prem then surely it’s a good idea to know where the fcuk he is, Jamaal he the one behind you receiving the ball, getting a quick massage and having a cuppa tea.

We can’t give away that many balls very sloppy from both of those players. Hayden was immense from box to box, a lot of these lads haven’t had a great deal of regular football for some time, they should only improve and gel

Of course, neither team was amazing. Start of the season.

We were attacking en masse, plenty passes were made, but yes, it’s a work in progress.

Don’t forget, this was still arsenal, we like never beat them.

We will be improving. Deserved a draw.

Poor performance 2nd half- very bad subs. I really don’t like the 3-5-2 and would prefer a trio up front.

Shameful dive by Almiron- I really hope he gets told to never do that again.

The people with the passion stayed away, left the day trippers and Ashley customers to it.

They boycotters didn’t pick a poor formation and substitute two CMs and have none on the bench.

Bruce seemed quite happy to sabotage his own team, Ashley seems quite happy to gamble the clubs future, if you support that you’re happy with it.

Look in the mirror before you point the finger of blame.

Mag52 That Arsenal team will be unrecogizable in a few weeks time. We won’t get a better chance to beat them than today. Probably more misplaced passes than those that were successful. Joelinton worked very hard, flashes of brilliance from Almiron although still looks lightweight. Maxime will be exciting – a bit like Ben Arfa. If the new new full backs are as good as been said we need to push Ritchie forward as he will be the main supply line of decent crosses.

I’ll keep my counsel on Willems for now, but let’s just say he showed signs of what I fear could make him unsuited to PL football.

Oh well it’s only minus 131 goal difference for Bruce now. Not quite sure what the tactics were today, does anyone else know? Strange subs and where was Longstaff being played exactly? Did we manage a shot on goal against an Arsenal team missing several of their best players? Our passing seemed atrocious and who seriously is going to get the goals for us? Think we have to go 4-3-3 or maybe Muto could play a link striker role a la Beardo. Desperately need some creativity from somewhere.

From memory Bruce always says he does’t want to make excuses then promptly launches into 10 or more. Nice chap though.

Shelvey was probably our best player. Almiron did ok. Allan Saint Maximin looked good when he came on. Manquillo, Schar, Longstaff, Dubravka had poor games. Willems was at fault for the goal. Not sure about Joelinton. Think Rondon is better. Should’ve signed him. Big mistake there. Thought Joelinton would be faster.

I don’t think Toxic Ash is the slightest bit bothered about you and your “actions”. The only bit of media mention was that the gate was down about 4000.

Definitely steve bruce fault the subs were wrong. I knew shelvey was struggling so thought he would get maxim on and go 3 up top and go direct. But against a poor arsenal we couldn’t even get ball and keep ball. our positioning and passing and movement was league 1 at best where we belong with ashley as owner.
The willems sub for shelvey and then playing him midfield then to left wingback then moving ritchie here and there completely made us lose shape. schar was crap. ritchie is only good for the left wng back role he shouldnt be moved to midfield or where ever. Shelvey i thought was poor even before his injury. We are more effective with midfield of longstaff and hayden. thought joelinton was like mitrovic in his hard work but not very productive. Almiron and saint max kept running into walls i.e. no world class end product.
Long season ahead but being relegated to lge 1 is best hope i feel in getting rid of ashley.

3-5-2 has already proven to be a non starter. We have to revert to Rafa’s 3-4-3 that he stumbled upon at the turn of the year. It affords us 7 behind the ball to let the 3 attack in unison… The 3 in midfield are too similar, none can beat a man or play quick clever short passes. How is Manquillo still here? Again, we need to play a 3 up top. Joel needs bodies around him

Hope Brucie doesn’t follow his tactical genius predecessor and not win the next nine games.

Very impressed with Maximim. He has to start. He is too good to sit on the bench. Perhaps the formation has to change so we have Maximim, Almiron and Joelinton starting.

Maximim will help Almiron by taking the pressure off him.

Something was wrong with Shelvey and Longstaff. They didn’t click. Hayden was good, as usual.
