Midfielder Gives Positive Assessment Of Today’s Match And Gets Some Recognition For His Performance

Isaac Hayden was interviewed for the Newcastle United website after his excellent performance in a 0-1 defeat to Arsenal.

This is some of what Isaac has said about the match.

“I thought we ran them close. I thought we had the better of the chances, really, during the game.

“But, against a top-six club in the Premier League, if you make one mistake – or if they have one half chance – they’re going to make the most of it.

“But credit to the lads, I think it was one of those ‘nearly performances’. I think we’ve had quite a few of those over the last couple of years but there’s definitely progress.

“Hopefully the fans can see from the club’s perspective that the players that they’ve brought in – and the players that are here – have progressed. It was a new formation, a new style of play and I think it suited the team today.

“I think it’s going to take time. Unfortunately, in football, you don’t seem to get much time.

“The new manager’s come in – it’s going to take time to get used to him for a lot of the players – and there’s a new formation as well as new players coming in.

“There’s a lot of change at the football club but, you know, as the weeks go on I think you’ll start to see the benefit of it. Even today, you saw the benefit of it. It was a good performance, lacking slightly in the final pass or taking a bit more care on the ball.

“But, in general – especially against a top-six side – I thought it was quite a good performance.”

We think Isaac Hayden is accurate in his reflection of today’s performance. It is early going and on another day it could have been three points. We were punished by a mistake but kept Arsenal very limited in their chances.

The formation and style of play are new and that showed in some of the poor passes and lack of spatial awareness. This is something the team will work to improve upon.

We still don’t know what the best eleven is as Allan Saint-Maximin, Jetro Willems, and Emil Krafth have only just the team less than a week and a half ago with Krafth just joining on Thursday.

Steve Bruce has only been with the club since July 17th which is just over three weeks ago. It will take time to get all the issues sorted and some of the finer details perfected. It is not time to panic just yet. Let’s hope to see some improvement against Norwich City this Saturday.

This is what Isaac has said about that upcoming match at Carrow Road.

“It’ll be a tough game. I watched Norwich on Friday and they played some good stuff.

“They’ll be wanting to bounce back from their defeat and they’ll be raring to go.

“It’s their first Premier League game back at home and we’re under no illusions – every game’s tough, and it’s just up to us to prepare this week, do the right things and go from there.”

The game against Norwich will be very interesting as Norwich have a lot of work to do this week as well. We felt they were very naive against Liverpool and paid the price. However, they do offer a threat going forward and Teemu Pukki looks a really good player.

Isaac has also been receiving some plaudits for his solid performance today. Some twitter accounts have posted some statistical analysis of his appearance today below.

I reckon rafa would of physically spewed watching our shape in the 2nd half.

    What was Bruce thinking.

We’ve got some good player, just need organising. This is where it gets scary, bruce organising…

I do have faith in joelinton from what ive seen of him, but i have zero faith in the cabbage to make him into a far superior player. Just think for the price we paid for him we could of got rondon and ryan fraser.

    You guys..
After what we all saw today..

    13th spot, 12th spot..
top scorer with 14 goals, 13 goals..

What on earth makes you so optimistic?
We played against a reserve team, and still lost!

The position in the table, that we are in now, is going to be the highest of the season.
After another defeat at Norwich, i guess you will all realise how much Rafa did for us.

It was obvious, that a lot of the players, who played with Premier League class under Rafa, didn’t do that today..

Some players looked lost, and lacked belief.. and Then they looked out on the bench.. And the must have thought.. “oh well, no help to get from that twat, where should i run next time”..

The players i am talking about are Manquillo, Longstaff, Hayden among others..
Yes also Hayden, who i thought looked slow and not on the same level as last year..
Okay he had som very good defensive actions, but he gave the Ball away again and again.. as did Ritchie..

    What a shitty performance today..
In my 28 years of supporting this club, i have never felt so empty after the opening game of the season. I feel worse, than i the previous relegation seasons really.

There is absolutely no point in moaning about Bruce’s tactics, we knew what he was like before he got here, all this bollorx about attacking more etc etc, I especially really don’t want to see your HWA’s, Munster’s, (you know who you all are) etc moaning about him either, you’ve got your wish and Rafa is gone, who on earth you all thought was going to replace him is anyone’s guess, did you honestly think Arteta was going to give up his cryogenic ice baths for a footin wheelie bin, give your heads a wobble, this is what you’ve asked for now reap it.

The performance was decent against quality opposition, admittedly somewhat below their best, as were we. The result didn’t go our way. We didn’t have the right bench, the subs were ill considered, and we were without some influential players. The sky isn’t falling.

Simply because its the first game of the season. You can’t judge how good or badly we are going to do because it’s too early and there are far too many factors which could be improved with time I.e, the team gelling and Bruce finding his best 11.

If its still the same after around 6 games or so then I would start to be worried.

Yes, I can also see the worrying signs but there is still time for those to be resolved so as of yet I’m reigning in all of my judgement.

If we had been starting our first game against arsenal with Rafa Benitez leading out a team with a few of his signings not only would we have won today it would have been unthinkable to not be a sell out.

That’s where it is right there.

We won one, lost 11 against top 6 sides last season. I think by far the most likely score would have been a 1-0 defeat with Rafa at the helm. Was it any worse than Cardiff last year? While Bruce has been and will undoubtedly be a lot worse than Rafa that game can’t be used as proof.

My man of the match for the Toon by a mile
Not much different to a Rafa team well organised First half we looked OK as good as Arsenal in a lacklustre display from both teams
Second half lost the plot no midfield back to playing lost the plot slow slow sideways football which costs us the goal
Supporting the toon is like Brexit
Families and mates arguing falling out on boycotting – owner/leader more interested in themselves and their own agenda and it showed on the fans along with the rain leading to apathetic support of the club today- hardly a song or chant
    My merit marks
Dubravka 6 had nothing to do/save but his distribution was shite
Dummett 6 ok sold williams short with pass but he should of came to the ball
Lascalles 6 ok didn’t read the situation that led to the goal still passes sideways and backwards
Schar 7 not his best display passing was all over the place – but tried to get forward
Manquilla 6 defended well but wasted the ball whem in good situations
Hayden 9 outstanding today hardly put a foot wrong – great recovering tackle second half – future captain ??!!
Longstaffe 5 poor game same to be stifled by the presence of Shelvey
Shelvey 5 good bad and ugly – won the ball gave it away good pass bad pass
Ritchie 7 had a decent game seemed to be playing a more central midfield role – not sure if worked
Almiron 8 exciting going forward but tends to waste the ball – no end product
Joelinton 7 looked ok if not a bit weak lot to learn about the Premiership
    Williams 3 overweight
Maxi 4 eliciting on the ball but ain’t got a clue where he is going
Bruce 7 first half 1 second half couldn’t get my head around taking off Longstaffe had a chance to shine when Shelvey went off and dropping Almiron into midfield
Crowd Toon 3 pathetic one song chant beginning of game

True Tsunski, but we can’t realistically measure ourselves equally against Arsenal, who we all know are well above us in terms of depth and quality. We need to be at our best to beat sides like them, and carry a bit of luck, we weren’t, and we didn’t, but we weren’t dire either, far from it. Bruce needs to do better with his squad selections and subs, and we need to have a few good players fit and back in the fold, to stake a challenge for upper mid, which realistically is the best we can hope for. The loss today doesn’t suggest we are headed for the drop, or relegation. We didn’t lose to Norwich, and even if we did, it would be premature to think we were.

Nonsense Tony. That didn’t cause the defeat. Our poor owner and management is responsible for that. We’ve gone back to what passed for a club under Steve McLaren. No real strategy. Buy young players to sell on in a couple of seasons. Rinse and repeat.
