Newcastle came out on the front foot against Arsenal playing in a bit more open style under Steve Bruce. Miguel Almiron looked very threatening in the first fifteen minutes though he did get a yellow for diving in the box.
There were a few crosses early on that were just out of the reach of Joelinton though the second one just glanced off his head after taking a slight deflection from an Arsenal defender.
Jonjo Shelvey would have a powerful shot deflected off the near post for a corner in the 19th minutes as Newcastle continued to threaten early in the game.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan had a great chance in the 23rd minute could only manage to sail it over the crossbar. It was probably the best chance of the first half and was a harbinger of Arsenal coming into the game.
Joelinton, though, would follow with a nice chance as he was able to get past a few defenders in the box but the subsequent shot was easily gathered by Arsenal keeper Bernd Leno.
Joelinton– some decent chances early against Arsenal
Shelvey lost possession in the 30th minute which led to an Arsenal counter but the Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang shot was parried behind by Dubravka for Arsenal’s first corner.
Arsenal would grow further into the game and start to get a bit more possession. Newcastle seemed to have Isaac Hayden moved on to the right with Manquillo further forward. Hayden had a crucial interception in the box in the 35th minute to deny Arsenal a shot.
Newcastle were flirting a bit with danger playing a higher defensive line and looked like they could be caught on the counter with Arsenal’s pace.
The game would go a little bit tepid to close the half as both sides would fail to keep possession consistently.
There’s goals to be had in this game and Newcastle have to take their chances in the second half. This is the time to beat what is a weakened Arsenal team. They still have new signing Nicolas Pepe and Alexandre Lacazette who can come on the second half but are missing some key members of the squad.
Bruce may want to think about bringing Allan Saint-Maximin on early in the second half to add another threat. Maybe in place of Sean Longstaff who has looked a bit rusty so far.

Comment #3Almiron is the mate who’s off his nut before he arrives at the club, dances like a lunatic and tries his luck with every woman then falls asleep in a booth an hour after arriving.

Comment #6I just don’t think we have the team for slick one touch passing football and we keep losing the ball in areas that allows Arsenal to counter we really need to be a bit more direct and switch it with our fullbacks to the other side when there is space and get the ball into the box quicker!
Charnley bumping his gums before the game in an interview mate we have about a 15-20 million net spend if we are lucky!! What happened to the rest?!! We really should have more options on the bench with no central midfielders for a start!!

Comment #7Really not keen on this formation- would prefer a trio in attack.
Shameful dive by Almiron. Really hope he doesn’t do it again.

Comment #11Hayden is a great crosser of the ball; his position today suits him. I think people are getting carried away with Longstaff… there were a few who would have had Shelvey down the road with the weight of the world on Longstaff’s shoulders. The guy is a work in progress, his quality will shine through with more game time.

Comment #16In the highly unlikely event that SportsDirect is left without a willing auditor, the consequences would be dire, said Stell. “The shares would be suspended. That’s ultimately what would have to happen,” he said. “Without an audit, you don’t have any data for the public to make investment decisions.”
In this eventuality, it’s likely the government would intervene and appoint an auditor, Stell added.

Lets hope the government appoint the HMRC to audit SD

Comment #1847k there for the match.
523 the way to go on the pitch, arsenal defensively poor, should be more assertive and put them under pressure.
Saint-max on for 1 of the Cm three please.
