Newcastle Start Strong But Fade A Bit In 0-0 First Half Against Arsenal

Newcastle came out on the front foot against Arsenal playing in a bit more open style under Steve Bruce. Miguel Almiron looked very threatening in the first fifteen minutes though he did get a yellow for diving in the box.

There were a few crosses early on that were just out of the reach of Joelinton though the second one just glanced off his head after taking a slight deflection from an Arsenal defender.

Jonjo Shelvey would have a powerful shot deflected off the near post for a corner in the 19th minutes as Newcastle continued to threaten early in the game.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan had a great chance in the 23rd minute could only manage to sail it over the crossbar. It was probably the best chance of the first half and was a harbinger of Arsenal coming into the game.

Joelinton, though, would follow with a nice chance as he was able to get past a few defenders in the box but the subsequent shot was easily gathered by Arsenal keeper Bernd Leno.

Joelinton– some decent chances early against Arsenal

Shelvey lost possession in the 30th minute which led to an Arsenal counter but the Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang shot was parried behind by Dubravka for Arsenal’s first corner.

Arsenal would grow further into the game and start to get a bit more possession. Newcastle seemed to have Isaac Hayden moved on to the right with Manquillo further forward. Hayden had a crucial interception in the box in the 35th minute to deny Arsenal a shot.

Newcastle were flirting a bit with danger playing a higher defensive line and looked like they could be caught on the counter with Arsenal’s pace.

The game would go a little bit tepid to close the half as both sides would fail to keep possession consistently.

There’s goals to be had in this game and Newcastle have to take their chances in the second half. This is the time to beat what is a weakened Arsenal team. They still have new signing Nicolas Pepe and Alexandre Lacazette who can come on the second half but are missing some key members of the squad.

Bruce may want to think about bringing Allan Saint-Maximin on early in the second half to add another threat. Maybe in place of Sean Longstaff who has looked a bit rusty so far.

A lapse by Willems ultimately the difference. Have my reservations about him.

Bruce made a mistake by not having Ki on the bench. Has to learn from that.

We shaded it first half and then the enforced sub changed the whole dynamic of the match. Was very competitive up to that point.

    Hayden MOTM.

Well that was a shocking performance to say the least against a weak arsenal side, weakest in memory tbf. Still early days and it will take time but bizarre subs, sub standard performances. Longstaff awful today along with many others.

My personal opinion is get away from 5 at the back, play almiron and ASM along with Joelinton. In terms of expectations that was probably the worst we could’ve done with how we played.

It is going to be an interesting year. Good team, defence well drilled (bar Willems – hasn’t been Rafa’ed). But where will the goals come from?

Went toe to toe with the Arsenal. Gave as good as we got. This team should be in no danger.

Critique: missing Yedlin and his pace. Team needs to gel and we’ll create more chances.

Joellington, Almiron, new guys look good. Dummett honorable mention as well as Ritchie, Shelvey.

Fcuk another long season awaits. We will be lucky to score 30, except Carroll we have no goalscorer, Joelinton you can see has no idea where to run or even anticipate where the ball will end up.

Result as expected, although we should have held them to a 0-0 draw Willem let us down by his lethargic Ness. Typical Newcastle display up against a better squad.

If only we could pass the bloody ball. Basics! Pathetic. This was the worse Arsenal starting line up to appear at SJP in past 20 years. What was Willems doing? waiting for a bus?
    Why didn’t Maxim start.?
Is Longstaff really worth all that money? Don’t think so

Very poor performance against the weakest arsenal xi to ever play in the premier league
Team looks unfit with several players visibly overweight
    Formation dreadful and didn’t work
Callum chambers one of the worst players in the premier league looked like van dijk against Linton

    Bruce Out!

Schar needs to stop huffing his own farts.

There are times to play the ball out from the back and choose the less obvious pass, not everytime and certainly with a lot less frequency in conditions like today. Think he;d have learnt after the 3rd or 4th one.

Cheap tunrover of possession was our main weakness today.

    Dubravka – 6.5
    Manquillo – 6.5
    Lascelles – 7
    Schar – 4
    Dummet – 6.5
    Shelvey – 7
    Longstaff – 6
    Hayden – 8.5
    Almiron – 7
    Joelinton – 6

Good first half with some chances and good moments of play. Forced Shelvey sub followed by Longstaff completely lost our shape. Poor second half in particular the last 25mins.

Really missed Rondons close touches and strength up top which I hope Joelinton can develop quickly

Good signs at times and lets go attack Norwich next week

Probably been said a million times, but I think a draw would have been a fair result. Joelinton shot when Hayden beside him was in on goal. The Arsenal goal was an individual error which Dummett will have to share responsibility for.

Joelinton certainly has no issues with his holdup play, won everything in the air and played clever layoffs.

Most worrying thing for me today was the formation after the substitutions – what was Bruce thinking?. Completely mad to take two ball passing CMs off and move the wing back into a central position. Just don’t get it. Max is perfect for a Shelvey type ball and I thought Shelvey was one of our better players in the first half. Thought Longstaff had a much worse game than Shelvey yet Shelvey was off first.
And what was Willems brought on for – to play in Richie’s position who stayed on the pitch anyhow?
Bizarre. We completely lost structure and if Bruce does a few more of those he’ll lose the team

Overall pretty poor performance! We didnt create enough and cannot pass.. Our final ball needs to improve.

    Negatives:
Ritchie (technically too weak for the PL)
    Manquillo (poor decision making)
Schar (very bad passing on the day)

    Positives:
Almiron (only one who looks to make something happen)
    Joelinton (looks decent)

We’ll be in relegation battle again this season, our central midfield aint strong enough..

Oh well it’s only minus 131 goal difference for Bruce now. Not quite sure what the tactics were today, does anyone else know? Strange subs and where was Longstaff being played exactly? Did we manage a shot on goal against an Arsenal team missing several of their best players? Our passing seemed atrocious and who seriously is going to get the goals for us? Think we have to go 4-3-3 or maybe Muto could play a link striker role a la Beardo. Desperately need some creativity from somewhere.

From memory Bruce always says he does’t want to make excuses then promptly launches into 10 or more. Nice chap though.

Probably should have had Ki on the bench. I am thinking that Bruce’s thought process was he had 3 central midfielders on the pitch and if he lost one he could revert to 2 in the middle. Shelvey must have got a knock and Longstaff is clearly not match fit after his injury.

Game lost to sloppy errors. A short pass, Willen not anticipating and then lascelles leaving his man to help out when he should have stayed on Aubamayang.

Gotta say I found that very depressing. Joelinton needs to out more energy in. St max looks average. Longstaff was dreadfull. Schar poor. Dup sloppy. Stupid sub by the manager. In fairness we did well first half but lacked fire. That looks like a poor team . If joe doesnt give us an outlet we look in very serious trouble. The goal killed us and I would be worried re mental strength
