This Player Rues Mistake But Makes Key Point About Gunners

Jamaal Lascelles had some really good comments after yesterday’s game against Arsenal. The Newcastle homepage have an article in which the skipper reveals his thoughts on what happened in the disappointing defeat.

This is some of what Jamaal has said:

“Overall, there were a lot of positives to take. We can’t drop our heads too much as we played some good football against a very good team.

“It was a shame we conceded in the way that we did.

“It was very annoying that we did that and I think, overall, we were probably the better team. They had a lot of possession but it was mostly in front of us and side to side which was comfortable to deal with.

“There’s a lot of frustration. It was not like they had scored from open play, playing one-twos and getting around us or scoring with quality play.

“It was from our own mistakes and, ultimately, it has cost us three points after a very good performance.

“We shot ourselves in the foot today and we’ll be looking to make sure we do not do that again.”

This is definitely the attitude you would want from the captain. It was Lascelles who drifted inside leaving Aubemayang unmarked where an Ainsley Maitland-Niles cross found him that was Newcastle’s ultimate undoing.

Lascelles will hopefully learn from this mistake as he says in the comments above. However, he is correct that Newcastle had Arsenal stifled and forced into a counter-attack on almost all of their chances. It was a glaring mistake and ultimately, the inability to mount a sufficient response that was the difference in the game.

Lascelles expands upon what Newcastle were able to do in the game with some further comments.

“I thought it was a very good first half. We’ve been working extremely hard in pre-season and we’ve got a philosophy which I think we stuck by today. We made it really hard for Arsenal.

“They have a quality team and they struggled to play forwards and get behind us at times to get shots away at goal. We need to take the positives from the game and not dwell on it too much.”

We’ll have to see how things improve in the coming weeks and that starts at Norwich on Saturday. It’s important to understand that Steve Bruce has only been here for three weeks and the lads have had to adapt to a whole new system and philosophy. It won’t happen overnight but there was enough to take away from this game to have hope that this slight bump in the road is not terminal and that things should improve.

It’s going to be a long hard season this,I don’t see us surviving with this squad especially with the 3rd rate yes man we’ve got in charge. The parasite has done us over once again and yet you still get 47500 there to lap it up.Arsenals team yesterday was the worst I’ve ever seen but we still didn’t lay a glove on them, worrying indead. We,ve allowed proven goalscorers to leave and replaced them with untested kids in the hope the slug can make a fortune selling them next year.A few years in the championship is the only way jabba will fcuk off cos all he wants is premier league exposure for shite direct.Ghost club,no ambition.

As much as I want rid of Ashley, I gave up my season ticket this year even though I rarely made it to games the past few seasons. I will never wish my club to lose or be relegated. If that’s your mindset, you’re not a supporter.

    Totally agree.
We as supporters don,t want relegation for the club but with Bruce in charge its just what will happen. We were very lucky to bounce straight back the two times it happened but i don,t think we will be so lucky next time. Maybe a few years in the champ, with gates well down and no sky money could finally get rid off Ashley.

    Munster,
I’m not going back, do you think it’s my fault, that 65 year old bloke’s or the chuckle brothers for denying us a
preseason, throwing togerther a bric a brac team at the last minute to save on wages and chasing out a
manager who’s kept us up two seasons running.

    Munster,
You think that we’re starting to look like a well run club, that the players are really enjoying life under Bruce and that clever Steve has them all training harder, why not treat you and the lad to a game, easyjet do some cracking deals to Newcastle, instead of paying £65 for a shirt worth £3 why not put that money towards a little day trip.

When your first substitute in a competitive game at your new club doesn’t know where hes meant to be playing, fans shouldn’t have any confidence in your management.

Bruce even said “once they realised Willems didn’t know where he was meant to be playing they sorted it”

Shows a lack of professionalism from player and coaching staff, one doesn’t know where he’s playing the others have failed to do their job and instruct him correctly.

    No confidence at all

I really had a good feeling about the game – Arsenal not full team and us at home with these rapid new players along with Miggy and a new look midfield of Longstaff, a committed Hayden and the new age romantic Shelvey.

    Absolute dream….BOOM!

Complete let down!!! Apart from some key moments (Miggy speed, Joelinton two chances and Shelvey post) we were average. The amount of wayward passing was disgraceful and no out & out threat on goal.
Just shoot it rather than running into defenders or losing it.

No defender on their most potent striker for the goal was terrible.
“Oh we switched off for a second” is not a convenient excuse – sorry for being a soldier but that stuff gets people killed.

It was Arsenal. I didn’t expect a result (but hoped for it). It’s only the start of the season etc..

Sorry but I have bad feelings for the upcoming season. It ruined my weekend and I hate myself for having faith under a MA regime.
Not read the blog since Friday which is a first………..perhaps I’m dying inside.

Lascelles still has so much to learn. He should take big blame for goal for not knowing auby was behind him and as last man he should have kept retreating back not go across. He needs to watch videos of how chiellini defends in them situations

How can a player come on in the Premier league game and not know where to play? So what do Bruce assistant were doing when he was about to come on? I thought usually the assistant managers will provide the tactical instructions sometimes in files or chalkboard. Utterly embarrassing for a Premier league club.

And lascelles should stfu with the talk. His positional sense is dreadful. The worst of our centre backs but he’s captain. Fernandez and lejeune are miles better than him.

Why are people still mentioning you know who?

He’s gone if you didn’t get the memo, it doesn’t matter what he would’ve done it matters what Bruce has and is going to do.

I doubt theres another manager in the country who would’ve set his bench up the way Bruce did. He left himself vulnerable to a midfield injury.

No plan B, if he was that scared of losing Dummet or Lascelles he should have dropped one of them from the starting 11 or planned to switch to a back 4 if injury forced it, which would have allowed for a balanced bench and team.

That to me is basic management, what Bruce did looked more like sabotage

    Martoon,

    Final Position: 16
    Final Number of Points: 38
    League Cup Round: 4
    FA Cup Round: 4
Player of the Season (Blog): Dubravka
    Top Goal Scorer: Joelinton
No of Goals for Top Goal Scorer: 11

After reading through the submissions – I actually thought Ronaldo Aarons had the best guesses for the season, until I saw One Fine Day’s – whose I am sure will be the most accurate, right down to the final sentence.
