The Sun’s David Coverdale has done an interview with our new number 9 and record signing Joelinton.
The Brazilian forward will turn just twenty-three years of age tomorrow and already has the weighted expectations of being this club’s record signing on his shoulders.
He is still coming to grips with the language barrier. He also has revealed that his girlfriend and young daughter have yet to accompany him in Newcastle.
This is what Joelinton said in the Sun about learning the language and his hopes of soon bringing his girlfriend and daughter to Newcastle:
“I need to learn English to improve my communication with other players.
“I think it is really important to speak the language so you can express yourself better. I like to chat to everybody and listen to those around me.
“We’re looking at ways for them to come and join me here as it’s very important for me. I really miss them.
“It’s good to come on your own at first in order to find an apartment and focus on the club and get to know your team-mates.
“I’m a very relaxed guy and wherever I’ve been before, I have always looked to make friends quickly.
“But once I am more settled in the city, my family being here will help me a lot.”
We sometimes forget of the upheaval that new signings undergo when they uproot and move to a new club. Joelinton’s situation is no different as he has come to a new country while not knowing the language and being separated from his family.
Joelinton– showed promise on Sunday
Joelinton also spoke of the pressure of being this club’s new number 9 and record signing:
“Due to the price and being the club’s record buy, I knew there would be some pressure.
“But I hope to have a great season and score lots of goals. Maybe if I score many goals, there won’t be so many questions about the No9 shirt.
“It has such importance as it has been worn by so many legends.
“It’s normal for people to talk about it and make comparisons, adding to the pressure, but I’m relaxed about it.
“I’m not here to take over from anybody. I just hope to contribute to the club, its history and bring joy to the fans.”
We saw glimpses of what Joelinton will bring to the attack on Sunday. However, it will be goals that he is judged on. Steve Bruce will have to find out the best way to get Joelinton firing on all cylinders.
The club have gambled that they can get goals from Joelinton this season. In his career, he has averaged about 1 goal every 4 games. He will have to improve on that strike rate if Newcastle are going to have a chance this season.
However, he was often played in a deeper role at prior clubs so he will have to adapt to now leading the line. It will take some time but he has the ability and physicality to make that the adjustment.

Comment #81Matt Ritchie appears to have been “nominated” to be Ashley’s mouthpiece.
He needs to do himself a favour and just restrict his comments to on field performances, good or bad!
The club is in a mess in more ways than one; third rate training facility; poor manager; poor squad built by Rafa on a shoestring budget with new inappropriate signings designed to appease the fans! The Andy Carroll signing is pathetic; we could have got Sturridge on a free!
And now we have Ritchie spouting off! FFS what a mess!

I try not to get dragged into these boycott / not to boycott arguments because everybody is entitled to their point of view and I respect both sides of the argument. However one thing I think that Sunday showed is there is a big gulf between fans who go to games and vocal fans who post on Social Media and Blogs like this!

Exactly Martoon.
The folks who still go contribute little to this blog by way of comment.
I don’t even think they read it much.
Why would they to be called all sorts by the likes of OLG.
I’d like to see him go to a game. Stand outside an entrance and hand out leaflets from TMG.
He could say don’t go in you morons support the boycott.
Now that would be entertainment.

Comment #84Anglo I won’t help mate, I bought my ST in March and I’m going to Watford for sure.
From being ‘doxxed’ wrongly to match going fans being called scabs I’ve had enough.
Scabs? I got my head caved in trying to stop scabs going to work. Match going fans are not scabs ffs. That was about jobs and lives, not a football match. People on here have lost the plot. Don’t like it, don’t go. Dead simple. Most demanding we boycott don’t even go to games. Never been. All mouth and the crowd on Sunday proved it. Match going fans and armchair fans are a different breed. If I have to pick sides – and it seems I have to – I’ll stick with my own kind from now on. I made my sacrifice and was accused of being there ffs.

Lascelles leaves Auba in the centre who is the arsenal player furthest forward to go and help Dummett when he didn’t need to.If you are blaming Schar for the goal it shows you don’t know what you are watching.

Comment #86Posada this is what you said and my response was appropriate.
Agreed. The NUST must maintain contact with the club.
You can’t do that if you are shouting for a boycott.
The stance of the trust should be – we want Ashley to engage with the supporters.
What happened to every last penny. Does it still apply etc.
*If he fails to as we would expect then you go to the press and anyone else who will listen and essentially embarrass him.

Everyone is panicking. Everyone’s nerves are frayed and everyone is overly sensitive.
People are scared to point their finger at Nufc as it would be like pointing your finger at a loved one.
It’s easier to lay blame at a face less protesters door.
Have you seen Rafas comments this morning, that alone should have people questioning Ashley’s tenure and what to do about it.
I hope things dont get worse before they get better.

Comment #91Not sure how Rafa can say he didn’t go for the money when he went to a Chinese club..I mean what else would you actually go there for to win their league lol. He clearly would have had offers from clubs more ambitious than us he could have went to yet still decided to go there and there is nothing wrong with that at all. I just wish he would be honest as its so blatantly obvious. Rafa was by far the best manager we could attract however do we feel that he should be asking for wages that put him on par with Klopp etc??

Comment #98It is going to be interesting to see how Bruce managers the top 3 conundrum. He clearly needs to play Joelinton, Almiron and ASM yet the formation he wants to play as a 352 does not accommodate. I dont think we should be switiching to a flat back 4 as our defenders/team is much more suited to a 3 at the back so only option is he reverts to what Rafa played which was a 3421 formation however this did rely on the 2 wide players tracking back deep and left us isolated with one up top at times.

Comment #101OP, the problem is, the only precedents we have for mass boycotts has seen Blackburn, Blackpool and Coventry inadvertently destroy their clubs. Coventry have lost their ground ffs. They’re playing miles away in Birmingham now.
You can’t hold a multi billionaire to ransom. It doesn’t hurt them, it hurts the club. And it’s fine to say we’d be better in Div One, but those armchair fans will desert the club and we’ll be there still, watching shyte.
Protest. I’ll join in. Attack SD, all for it. But hurt something I love?
If people aren’t happy, don’t go. I didn’t go Sunday because I wanted to let Ashley know I wasn’t happy. What was the point? 47k turned up and I get accused of being there anyway. Bear in mind it’s holiday season and opening games are rarely a sell out because many are away.
I was expecting the ground to be half empty, going on the amount of people I’ve heard have given up their ST.

What difference does it make to our predicament whether Rafa had of gone to Yeovil or Yeading as opposed to Yifang Diligang, he was leaving as those two lying tw@ts can’t be trusted, it makes no difference to us if he went for free or money.

It’s like this. If you simply call for a boycott you play into Ashleys hands. He is by all accounts a bit of an odd bod recluse. He loves any reason to say nothing. He has the perfect reason to blank you if you are shouting for Ashley Out as your sole agenda.
If you want the help of MPs etc you have to play the game. We have supported the club and kept our season tickets going, he won’t engage with us. Chi or whoever has bullets to fire that can be understood outside the North East. If you just shout Ashley Out it is not understood by a wider group.
But, if you want to do more that’s where the pressure groups come in. The trust should not get stick for not being militant. It has to keep that channel open.
I don’t like the boycott. It sets supporters against each other.
I get angry yes. Why. Because some folks choose not to go and think all should do the same.
Some started their personal boycott five years ago.

The season has started and suddenly nothing from BZG?
For months we all thought or should I say prayed it to be true with all the social / media coverage, but it has gone completely silent like a dream, Ashley said there’s several possible buyers how come no one has said anything?
At some stage as a fan we just have to accept that until Ashley eats to many pies and keels over we are stuck with him.

Comment #118Im trying to be optimistic with those predictions. The other day was awful. Joe needs more energy and effort. Max looks awful. Jetro looks unfit. Bruce talked about playing ritchie centrally. But we need our atmosphereback to some degree anyway. Continued boycotts will see us relegated very fast with bruce in charge next year too. If you want to be Leeds, best of luck with that. Support the team.
