Bruce Gives Update On Injured Duo Seen Training Earlier In The Week

Steve Bruce has given the following comments on the progress of both Andy Carroll and Florian Lejeune.

Bruce is right to temper expectations a bit as both Andy and Florian still have a lot of work to do before becoming match fit. Both have been out with serious injuries and should not be rushed back.

While neither are ‘around the corner’, they are getting that much closer to a return to full training. Steve has given a two to three-week time frame for the duo to return to start training with the team.

Florian Lejeune– will provide big boost when fit

This is sooner than we had imagined for Florian Lejeune. While he had no specific return date identified, a return to training in two weeks would be almost exactly five months since his knee injury on April 6th. So with a little luck, Florian could be available less than six months removed from his injury.

The two to three-week time frame for Andy Carroll to begin training is a little behind the target date of his return. That was reportedly the match at Liverpool on September 14th. We would imagine that he would require a few weeks to get match fit once he does start training with the team. With the game at Anfield in just over three weeks, that may be a little soon for Andy.

However, it is best to proceed with extra caution for Andy and Florian. When they finally do return, we want them to stay fit and in the team. They likely will both provide big boosts upon their return.

    Jail,
I think the sooner people realise that boycotting fans aren’t the enemy and matchgoing fans aren’t the enemy then the sooner we can put something together to focus on Ashley and hasten his departure.

Munster you cannot compare a world class manager with Steve Bruce. To have a defensive strategy like Rafa needs planning and discipline with everyone doing their job. It’s different to just getting behind the ball and defending like madmen!

    Ffs Munster,
If Bruce parks the bus and gets a result I’m sure he’ll get plaudits, you, you creep never said anything when things went right or very rarely, you only said anything when it went wrong, nearly as bad as catchy.

    Lilo @ 72

Agreed. That’s a good point. That defensive set up worked because everyone knew their own job and each others jobs.

    Munster @ 11

Don’t think too many would fault Bruce for setting up tight, try to force mistakes from Spurs and try to hit on the counter. Whatever he does he needs to prepare, have a plan, and adjust as needed. He can’t come across as naive. And he already has been declared a pathetic dinosaur. He should care about how to get 3 points on Sunday. Not what some bloggers post or pundits say.

You’re not Alex Bruce are you? 🙂

    Toonces,
My fear with Bruce is, for the first time, he is coming into a job knowing he is inferior to his predecessor. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a manager have so little self cobfidence when coming into a job. Even Moyes had that self confident, arrogabt air about him when he replaced Ferguson. That expression of being good enough to easily take this job on.

Bruce doesn’t. That will be filtering through to the squad, and cause the uncertainty and confusion we have seen.

Rightly, or completely deluded, Bruce needs to say screw Rafa. This is my squad now and I’m doing this exactly my way and good enough to make this a success.

Regardless of what we think of him, he has regularly been poached from his current role by a bigger/better resourced club. He clearly had something about him, the games chamged, but losing the self confidence is the death knell for a manager.

    jane,
Is this the real you or the doppel jane that appeared last night?

Matty is going to be an interesting case. Still time for him to go out on loan, and despite him being named in the squad, I think the best option is for him to go out on loan.

Speaking of loans, worrying Sorenson, for the second time, doesn’t seem to be up to starting on loan. Hopefully it is just a bedding in process, but it really does demonstrate the gulf between 23’s and the lower leagues.

Palace – they even took out 3 injunctions to try keep him – Wigan, Birmingham, Huddersfield, Sunderland. Freddy Shepherd allegedly offered Birmingham 3million for him after SBR was sacked.

I guess us too, but I won’t count that one as we were out of options.

They get in behind the front two too easily. Joelinton and Almiron can’t lead the press on their own. The pair of them need to either drop off a little, to allow us to get a nice tight compressed shape, then we can press as a unit. Or we play a higher defensive line. No good saying we need to get Almiron further up the pitch, unless the midfield and defense is also getting further up the pitch too. In possession, we need to get our wingbacks on the ball in their half. It’s no good at all knocking it up to Joelintin and Almiron, if there is no support for them. It’ll just come straight back, and unsurprisingly the pairs heads will drop.

That was in response to you. All the clubs he left were reluctant to lose him as well. He forced a lot of them through, similar to how he forced through his move here this time round.

    Nicky,
Arrigo Sacchi, the father of disciplined and structured team defending, said that at no point out of possession should there be more than 10 yards between each line.

    defence – 10yds – midfield – 10yds – forwards.

That never left enough space for opposition to have space between lines and to open or stretch your setup.

In possession, there should be always 1 midfielder covering the space between the defence and the midfielders that supported the forwards, meaning that while more open, you still had these defined spaces which were always manageable for recovery and holding up play on the transition phase.

Nicky im not sure miggy is a 10. I love his energy etc but I dont know if he has the brains to be a 10, in the way I see 10’s . Maybe its just me though. Apart from that, as ive said , we can talk shape until the cows come home. Its no good without effort and too many have been low on workrate since Bruce came.

    Jail,
Bruce tried to resign 3 times at Palace before Jordan put him on gardening leave. All the above have paid for his services. He has often resigned in the same fashion he did with Wednesday when joining us.

At one stage he was the most expensive manager in the world, in terms of compensation paid for him to move.

Yeah, I think we are giving the opposition too much space to play between the lines, made worse because they have an extra man having gone past our front two too easily, and I agree Almiron is a problem for us at ten. No goals, no assists, everything is played at a hundred miles an hour. Good player, great attitude, fast, full of running, skillful, a threat and a pest, but I think he’s a winger, at this level, at this stage, and prefer him as part of a front three.

The reason Benitez played the same defensive shape whatever the opposition was because he is consistent, he was solidifying a regime that would stand us in good stead when the season wore on, and it did. If he had chopped about trying all sorts of stuff we would have been a mess. The most important thing is that the players weren’t put off their stride when Jail was banned from the Strawberry.
