Fans Have Their Say On Bruce’s Tactics In Win At Spurs

Ever since Steve Bruce was hired, tactics have been at the forefront of many discussions. Rafa Benitez had Newcastle set up brilliantly against top six sides in efforts to try and secure results. He was criticized in the national media for playing this type of football but generally praised locally for his tactical acumen.

Steve Bruce has never been considered a tactical genius by any means. However, the criticism he has received this past week about his tactics were overblown. While he is no Rafa Benitez, Steve Bruce is a very experienced manager and has played the game at the highest level.

Today, Steve Bruce set the team up perfectly. The players played their part superbly and executed the well-developed tactical plan. It was a Rafa-esque display. That is not meant as a slight to Bruce in the least. He set this team up and he developed the plan this week.

However, he is always going to be compared to Rafa Benitez. This was a similar result to some of the unexpected ones last season. The credit goes to Steve Bruce and these players. This was not a plug and play tactic Rafa left behind in an old desk that Bruce has stumbled upon and dusted off. It was formulated, implemented, and executed by this year’s staff and players.

They deserve all the credit for it. Here are some Newcastle United fans who were impressed with the tactical display this afternoon.

He’s even received some credit from one of his harshest critics this week:

Aye bit of a piss take to be crediting Rafa with that performance like. Unless of course he flew back from China and trained them all week?

Quite impressive considering how much of a shambles last week was.

Last point on Shelvey. While we have Schar and when we have lejuerne back I don’t see the need for our Cm to come so deep to get the ball from the CBs. Both of these are capable of hitting a 50yd ball on the money.

As I say shelvey further forward almost as a 10 would be fine. Anything else is a big no from me 🙂

    Can Bruce sustain it? Hopefully.

I hope he doesn’t try to change too much about ‘making us more attacking’.

Said earlier, this type of set up needs to be our foundation and base for every game this season.

Joelinton battled hard all game. Toon played with heart and guts: Dummett, Schar, Lascelles all battled as warriors! Almiron tireless effort all match. Atsu a touch of class when needed. Hayden continues his player of the season campaign!

    Nevertheless….Ashley Out!!! 😉

I don’t think there’s really a huge difference in those variations of three at the back to be honest. We looked a lot more compact and organised this week and we held the ball up a lot better. Basically the total bloody opposite of last week’s shambles.

Ugly but a good win. Dummet MOM for me. Joelinton played much better, not just the goal, he fought hard for the ball. Almiron unlucky on the curler to have it deflected. Glad to see Bruce change the formation today.

Excellent and organised performance today. Looked very much more of a 541 from the off today, with Almiron and Atsu breaking and cutting in to offer support on the rare occasions we attacked.

The 3 centre halves were superb, and barely put a foot wrong all match. You could have been excused for thinking Kane wasn’t playing for most of that.

Spurs fams I spoke to after on the train are now worried how good Norwich are, as they were saying they could have played all day, and not been able to break down such an organised side.

Can’t really criticise anyone in the side today, only real negative is St Max going off, and possibly Joelinton going off with a knock. Hopefully both are okay, and nothing serious.

Great stadium, poor atmosphere from the home fans. The loudest they got was for Joelinton being down injured and their players not kicking it out.

Better question is where are all the Rafa haters. That was purely park the bus tactics yet Rafa got slammed when he did that. Fair and balanced criticism my arse.

Spot on with Shelvey when he is playing with Schar, LeJuene or Fernandez
He comes do deep to take the ball off them who are all ball players ends up playing like a third centre half – be more effective playing higher up the pitch

?? Joelinton’s first goal for Newcastle is courtesy of Christian Atsu’s first PL assist since Dec 2017 – had gone 41 PL apps without an assist, in which he’d created 29 chances

Atsu seemed to jog around a lot the second half, guessing lack of match fitness?

    Bruce oot!
He’s still sh** though. 900 games of mediocrity. 1 good game which was uncannily identical to a Rafa team. Two banks of 4 very close, players reluctant to leave their position. Its not surprising though, just a surprise Bruce took 3 games to work out Rafa knew what he was doing. If he just leaves the back 7 the way they were and gets something out of our three forward players we can probably stay up. Trouble is Bruce will probably get ideas at some point. He needs to do well over a full season before I’d change my opinion.

    SD,
Atsu put a lot of work in first half, amd still worked hard second half. He went down with cramp twice, so clearly fitness was an issue for him, but he did well today.

Not meant at as a slight to him. But he seemed to not hustle as normal. Saw a lot of loose balls he was late too or didn’t even try for. Yes, he was good going forward.

I suspect that Brucie and the squad probably talked about the way Rafa set the team up to avoid defeat, so in a sense it was Rafa’s tactics but credit has to go to Brucie for implementing them.

    Sd,
I didn’t think you were meaning it as a slight mate. He played well, challenging in the air to just compete and make it difficult, and harrying. Definitely lacking fitness, and I doubt they would have wanted him playing for that long today, hopefully will stand him in good stead for upcoming games. He will be sore tonight and tomorrow though!

You want to give credit to Bruce for using tactics of a man you slated for 3 years?

Aren’t you going to tell us about attacking possesion based football?

Steve Bruce did what he should have done from the beginning; set the team up just as Rafa did. Defend in depth and hit on the break. If you have a limited team you have play that game.

We have difficult games to come and it will be interesting to see he approaches these games. The Tottenham game was easy to predict the tactics, against so called weaker teams the tactics might be more challenging.

Yes I’ve slagged Brucey off. He still isn’t out of the woods yet. One Win ! Lets hope it continues ! But yesterday I left the previous post after the match. You obviously didn’t read it.
    From a previous thread,
I’m quick to criticize but I’m also quick to give praise when due,
EVERYONE of NUFC team played and gave their all in every tackle and pass in my opinion. Good goal for Joelinton, I’m pleased you found the net at last in style. Almiron, You chased everything you could and did well. I bet you’ve got a few bruises as well. Saint Maximin , It’s a pity about the hamstring flare up. Maybe you do need a few more weeks to recover properly.
I’m proud to be a Geordie after watching your performance. Brucey keep it going . Right choice of team and excellent tactics.
ASHLEY, That’s a kick in the knackers for you. Spurs being your team LOL !
