Longstaff, Krafth, and Saint-Maximin In Shock First Eleven At Spurs

Here is the team that Steve Bruce has selected to face Tottenham today. He makes two changes from Norwich.

It looks like Steve Bruce was coy with his formation comments during Friday’s press conference. He is changing to a 5-2-3 or 3-4-3, as Jonjo Shelvey has been dropped. Allan Saint-Maximin comes into the starting eleven, and we assume will play on the right of a front three. Sean Longstaff also returns to the first eleven while Christian Atsu makes a return to the bench.

This is a brave decision by Steve Bruce, but we hope it pays dividends. These were the types of matches that Newcastle were generally able to keep close last season. However, the display will greatly outweigh the result.

Here is how Tottenham will start the match.

This is what Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has to say about what he expects from Newcastle:

“Newcastle are a very difficult opponent. They need to start winning points, so it’s going to be tough.

“They have a new manager, new signings. All that will make them more focused and try to be compact.”

Let’s hope Newcastle are a difficult opponent for Spurs this afternoon. We need to see a reaction from the boys today.

Howay The Lads!

Besst of luck to the Toon Army, think that we will really need it tonight, but on a side optimistic note, with 8 matches played since friday in the English premier league,6 away teams won their away matches,no draws with only aston villa and liverpool managing home wins. So,just hope tonight be our first victory into the present campaign.FORWARD THE TOON ARMY.

    Key there is dropping Shelvey.
Glad he has got there on that.
Sadly does not have the legs or the defensive ability you need to fit into that line up.
    Rafa knew this.
His team mates will know it. When he is picked and they have to make allowances for him I feel they struggle to believe in it.
Sad for the lad as he is a talent. Just does not fit into the modern way.

    Rafa’s 3/4/3 I think.

Hoping it’s a 4-2-3-1. Would rather Fernandez than Schar even though I’m a big fan of Schar, he;s been awful so far this season and we can ill afford to be repeatedly giving it away today, so hopefully he’s focused and disciplined like last season.

Manquillo over Krafth too. Not much between them in ability, but Manquillo is at least fully integrated and understands the pace and physicality of the PL. Krafth was awful at blocking shots last wee, at fault for at least one goal.

If Shelvey is being dropped for a lacklustre display against Norwich, there are at least another 6 players—with less ability than Shelvey— that should be dropped. Bruce is probably setting up for a draw, hence using Shelvey as a sub.

Oh yes and glad the idle Shelvey has been dropped. So he blows hot and cold, I love and hate him. Has no personal standards and sense of responsibility, needs a strong manager to keep him honest and on his toes.

Surprised but glad to see him stamping his authority and dropping Shelvey. Let’s hope it sends out a message to the other players, no matter who you are I can and will drop you.
Only other thing is I’d have brought Manquillo back in as Krafth looked some way off the pace last game.

I think in all fairness to Cabbage Heed, this is the best team we could play. The aim for this specific game should be quick (or long) balls to our three pacy forwards. Shame we can’t pick 12 as Shelvey would probably be useful in this game. Jonjo looked OK against Arsenal but should never play in a 3 with Ki again – or a 2.

Ancient. Shelvey hasn’t been dropped due to his performance.

He’s been dropped to accommodate this formation.

I personally thinks its the correct decision.

33 celcius in London, going up to 38 on Thursday. Where I live is regularly 38+ but seems hotter in England. Not much aircon or fans here so it seems worse.

Up front, even though Saint-Maximin is coming back from a hamstring strain, he is one of the few players who can keep pace with Miguel Almiron and Joelinton when Newcastle counter. That is going to be a crucial outlet today as Newcastle simply can’t afford to surrender possession. They need to ask a question or two, too. (Chronic)

Unfortunately I can’t see anything other then a spurs win. That lineup is really scary.

Moura, kane and Son all capable of scoring out of nothing.

Let’s hope Lloris has one of his bad games.

If ASM and Joelinton keep getting mugged we will be over run, especially down our right flank that’s why we need Shelvey’s out ball to make use of the pace up front.

Going back to beneitez formation is useless if joelinton can’t hold up the ball like rondon did.
