Longstaff, Krafth, and Saint-Maximin In Shock First Eleven At Spurs

Here is the team that Steve Bruce has selected to face Tottenham today. He makes two changes from Norwich.

It looks like Steve Bruce was coy with his formation comments during Friday’s press conference. He is changing to a 5-2-3 or 3-4-3, as Jonjo Shelvey has been dropped. Allan Saint-Maximin comes into the starting eleven, and we assume will play on the right of a front three. Sean Longstaff also returns to the first eleven while Christian Atsu makes a return to the bench.

This is a brave decision by Steve Bruce, but we hope it pays dividends. These were the types of matches that Newcastle were generally able to keep close last season. However, the display will greatly outweigh the result.

Here is how Tottenham will start the match.

This is what Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has to say about what he expects from Newcastle:

“Newcastle are a very difficult opponent. They need to start winning points, so it’s going to be tough.

“They have a new manager, new signings. All that will make them more focused and try to be compact.”

Let’s hope Newcastle are a difficult opponent for Spurs this afternoon. We need to see a reaction from the boys today.

Howay The Lads!

They’re going past Krafth like he’s not even there. He’s totally out of his depth here. Bruce MUST see that he’s struggling. Way too much coming from Spurs on their left hand side.

Very good half, mostly defending as expected but we did it well. Going forward I think with a little more cuteness we could possibly have had another goal. Credit where it’s due to the lads so far.

A scare at the end there.

Bruce doing a good Rafa impression for 45mins. Got them drilled and looking familiarly organised in this shape.

    Atsu excellent, Joelinton too.

Loved that bit of Ritchie shouting picked up at the end of the half, telling Atsu to turn, then hold it, then now play it, then passed back and told whoever it was that received it “fullbacks, fullbacks!” indicating them to switch it to Krafth at RB which they did.

Works just as hard audibly as he does pyhysically, anybody that has played the game knows ya’ need at least a couple of vocal players on the pitch directing play.

Sounds like hyperbole but I’m not sure I’ve ever seen Dummy lose an aerial battle. He’s imperious!

Almiron needs to do much more for me. Atsu played better in 30 than he’s shown so far this season.

Just trying to aimlessly run at full tilt with your head down isn’t enough. Should be playing on the shoulder whenever we pick it up instead of coming deep. Use Joelinton drawing the defenders short to break their line.

We look dangerous going forward but look like conceding when defending. Krafth the weak link. Longstaff too slow (a liability). Almiron a headless chicken again. Fingers crossed for the 2nd half.

Need to give Krafth more time to adapt but this isn’t the game for that. Never thought I would say it but manquillo looking the better option there at the minute would like to see that switch made.

Has SB ditched 352 for Rafa’s 343? with Joe and ASM / Atsu instead of Rondon and Perez. Looks much better today, so far.

3CBs doing well too. Schar interceptions, Lascelles blocks and Dummett headers.

That assist from Atsu was fantastic! That is what we have been missing….a bit of brilliance in or around the box!

newcastle always looked more likely to score with 20% of possession in that half …some very good defending. krafth is actually a pretty solid player..not great, but dependable.

some weakness in the middle of the pitch though hayden and longstaff cant push forward

ritchie off for willem after 15 minutes maybe

Still think we will lose but this performance gives me hope that the organisational that Benitez instilled is still there so our season might not be the train wreck I thought, got to stick to this formation… Basically anything good from this season is Down to Benitez groundwork

Spurs will go full tilt on krafth side. Almiron and krath are headless chickens.

There having nothing against Ritchie and dummett. 2 fantastic players.

    But krath and almiron…
And longstaff needs hooking. Out of his depth here.
