Steve Bruce Wants To Get On With Taking Club Forward After First Win

Steve Bruce was thrilled after today’s win at Tottenham. However, he also seemed to exude a bit of confidence after a stalwart performance from the lads.

These are some comments that Steve made after the match that have been posted online by the Chronicle.

“The only way we can respond to criticism is like that.

“I mean, to say I ‘cannot even do a warm up’ is mad. I have managed 900-odd games and over the years you would think there would be some sort of respect.

“We have had a tough week so we have had to respond in the right way and thankfully the players have.

“We’ve come to one of the biggest platforms in Europe and won the game. I’m delighted we turned them over.

“I knew it would be difficult maybe not that difficult. But I want to get on with taking the club forward now. The fans enjoyed watching their team.”

Here is another interview posted online by beIN Sports in which Bruce talks about the criticism he has received. He also goes on to praise the players and their fantastic performance.

Steve Bruce must build on this performance. He is absolutely right to be buoyed after this this result.

However, it is only one win and we have 35 more matches to go in the league. The players and staff must work hard to continue to improve. Steve seems to understand that as this was his response on whether the players would be off tomorrow.

“No, they will be in tomorrow, and they will be working hard.”

Well done to him. His tactics failed in the first two games and he said. “Lads how did Rafa drill you to play? So that!”
    well done Rafa 😛

    Fantastic Win!

Great effort and credit to Bruce. The team looked like they knew what they had to do and they went out to do it.

Never bet against the Toon! Even if the smart money is to bet against the toon 🙂

And a nice injection of positivity into the discussion.

    Howay the Lds!

Dummett for me, but I give so much credit to the back 3, Lascelles had his best game in a long time for me, schar just gets better and better.
Quiet but effective games by the rest of the team.

Hope Miggy scores soon, for his own sake.

People hating on shelvey for me is ridiculous I worried last week this is gonna be the norm where the useless and slow ki got away Scott free hardly a mention on here let alone from the commentators in the match

This wasn’t a shelvey game but when we need to play more expansive and use almiron and the saint to there strengths you’ll all be saying we need someone to find them

Longstaff had a terrible game today by his own high standards but I’m not saying he shouldn’t play again infact if we can get longstaff shelvey hayden almiron maximum and joelinton as a forward line I’d be very happy

    I guess it’s no more 352 anymore, it’s back to 343.

Funny how when we revert back to Rafa tactics, everybody knows exactly what to do.

I’m fine with playing how we did today, there will be a few who will moan about boring football, but I don’t demand a team that always win, I demand a team who always tries, and today every player tried harder than I expected!

Will be interesting to see the cup side after all the noise about going after a cup. I can’t see how a lot of them players won’t be carrying knocks so need a rest but think Bruce will be slaughtered if he does put a weakened side out.

Fair play Steve Bruce that was far from expected so well done to all concerned. Great battling performance with a bit of finesse from Atsu , a great finish from Joe and a flawless defensive performance from Dummett. Well done boys.

Haven’t bothered to trawl the the blog catching up but that was a real Rafa display today, well done to Brucie for following the master.

Did anyone else miss the 1st ten minutes of the game, couldn’t tear myself away from the Ben Stokes Grand master display.

Well done to Joel for a well taken goal with a great assist from Atsu, on today’s form Joel looked a £40m striker, led the line very ably.

Gutsy performance all round and on that form we should move up the table, I said 2 wins and a draw would be my pass mark for Brucie in his 1st 7.5 games so a win and a draw to go.

Shelvey just hasn’t got the engine to play in this formation. Would rather see Matty L coming on in this formation than shelvey.

We will need shelvey and ki at some point, and I’m sure they will do something for us at that point. But just now longstaff and Hayden running the show!

The Lascelles dive in front of Kane was executed to perfection, the ref. or VAR did not know what to do so let it go.

The Harrison household is still on a high after this win! 😀 As others have said, you have to give a ton of credit to the defenders, as possession was in Spurs favor by a large margin. Gutsy, gritty hard work paid off. Well done all!

Neither did longstaff today to be fair well off it, hayden bossed it but again I will say a full on defensive team isn’t for shelvey and it certainly isn’t for shelvey without wingers or runners like last week

I remember last time people wrote off shelvey, he came off the bench and turned a game around.

Long season, Hayden and longstaff won’t last every game of the season

I think Almiron must have been on something today the way he was trying to chase down their players at times. Must have covered a million miles with no exaggeration.

I am not writing shelvey off either. He is a class player but he can’t be played in a 2 man Cm slot in this formation it’s that simple. Play him further up the pitch In a team that should have a lot of the ball and he would get bags of assists and a good few goals. Ever since he decided he was this QB type Cm he has been poor. Not got the engine, physical attributes or positional awareness to play in a deep Cm slot.

Agreed. even last season Shelvey would take the ball and dwell on it looking to pick out that one off pass. Those seconds are crucial particularly in high tempo games, blink and the chance has gone. ManCity and Liverpool tend not to blink.

Great performance! Finally we got 3 points from the top 6 teams away! The formation used today may also suit us when we dominate the game, going from 5-4-1 to 3-4-3. I hope we can see that against Leicester and watford. The fighting spirit and teamwork today, is what I thought we would have already from the (based on all the interviews with the players in preseason). Still early days, but last season we played 10 games before we won. HOPING for top 10 and a cup-run.

Its a bit off to credit that win to benitez. Yes he instilled good defensive shape but to give Bruce abuse since he arrived, and then take the credit off him, strange. Lets give the man his chance and have a modicum of fairness, for a change.

All of our player came off the pitch knackered after their efforts so there will have to be changes for the Leicester game to give them a chance to recover.

You’ll probably find that they will make a lot of changes as well so still a chance to progress and a chance for Muto, Shelvey, Manquillo and Matty and a few others to show what they can do.

Nobody has written Shelvey off, this is the problem on here, people constantly twisting others words.

Shelvey absolutely will have to show more desire and commitment than he has done though if he desn;t want to become yesterday’s man. Last weekend was borderline disgraceful.

He’s capable of playing even in this formation, but it’s undeniable he is prone to lazy spells and bad body language throughout his career. It’s up to him to show he can be relied on and trusted to muck in when the opportunity arises. He can do it because h has, but seems to lapse every now and then.

I think him and Gayle coming off the bench together when we need a goal will be a great asset, they have that telepathic understanding, although it’s been a while since they played together.

It’s essential when Shelvey is on the pitch you have somebody on the shoulder and midfielders breaking the lines head of him.

Problem for him is Hayden/Longstaff clearly enjoy playing alongside each other and it works.
