Steve Bruce was thrilled after today’s win at Tottenham. However, he also seemed to exude a bit of confidence after a stalwart performance from the lads.
These are some comments that Steve made after the match that have been posted online by the Chronicle.
“The only way we can respond to criticism is like that.
“I mean, to say I ‘cannot even do a warm up’ is mad. I have managed 900-odd games and over the years you would think there would be some sort of respect.
“We have had a tough week so we have had to respond in the right way and thankfully the players have.
“We’ve come to one of the biggest platforms in Europe and won the game. I’m delighted we turned them over.
“I knew it would be difficult maybe not that difficult. But I want to get on with taking the club forward now. The fans enjoyed watching their team.”
Here is another interview posted online by beIN Sports in which Bruce talks about the criticism he has received. He also goes on to praise the players and their fantastic performance.

Steve Bruce must build on this performance. He is absolutely right to be buoyed after this this result.
However, it is only one win and we have 35 more matches to go in the league. The players and staff must work hard to continue to improve. Steve seems to understand that as this was his response on whether the players would be off tomorrow.
“No, they will be in tomorrow, and they will be working hard.”

Comment #41Am I the only one who thinks Richie is class in this wing back role? Not liked him for a while further up as I like my wide attacking players to be able to go past their man. As a wing back his tireless running is a great attribute. He seems to be getting better and better defensively as well.

Comment #43One thing I don’t think anyone has mentioned but starting 11. Bruce had almiron on the right and ASM on the left whereas myself and most on here would have it other way round. Actually quite like the idea of it tbh. Left foot on the right, right foot on the left. Means when in possession or in the attack, players are more likely to come inside to come closer to the goal and joelinton. Hopefully won’t be long until we see it in action but safe to say, Atsu has the shirt right now.

Comment #44Lots of people are giving shelvey grief and writing him off have a look!
Last week he played better than most defence isnt his game simple his game is getting the ball and releasing it long short whichever way he wants last weeks formation was shocking for him no runners no wingers and slow full backs

Comment #50Nufc-83 – Heard Ritchie shouting “keep the ball” to someone (can’t remember who) who was just about to put a dodgy cross in JUST before half time, who then turned and played it back.

Comment #51I think the key thing is for this formation to work, you need the cms to cover a lot of ground. Commentator on my link today said something about Hayden covering a lot of km’s (Forgot the exact figure), around 75 mins just going side to side.
That’s not shelveys game. Don’t think anyone is questioning his ability. Just his suitability for the 2 man in midfield role for this particular formation.
I’ve never been his biggest fan to be fair. Think for all his passing ability he doesn’t dictate games too much and gifts possession when trying to look too much in a killer ball when recycling possession would be more effective. That run with diame though in the second half of our first season back got me really excited that he was about to fulfil the potential but we haven’t seen that shelvey since.

It as Atsu he shouted to initially:
“Hold it, hold it!”
After he overlapped “Give it now!” which Atsu did.
Then he played it back to Longstaff and he was being pressed, Ritchie shouted “Fullbacks, fullbacks!” to indicate Longstaff to have a look and switch it to Krafth who was in lots of space.

Comment #53Let’s not get it twisted, a great result today and well done all. We was very very lucky today and will struggle to win many more games this season, unless we start to keep hold of the ball and create opportunities to score.
