It was quite the display this afternoon at Tottenham. The lads were set up extremely well and Joelinton took his chance beautifully. On a day where the hosts enjoyed 80% of the possession, Newcastle kept their concentration and were able to battle for the win.
Steve Bruce had the lads set up in 5-4-1 and they played on the counter very effectively. Joelinton’s hold-up play was superb, while Miguel Almiron and Christian Atsu ran their socks off.
The defense played with tenacity and fight. They seemed impenetrable at times as they kept their shape. Spurs did get a few chances, and on a better day they may have put a few in. However, Newcastle took their chance and have gotten their first win under Steve Bruce.

Comment #5So I’ve got to say, whilst Dummett was probably the clear MOTM, have to say a big mention for Lascelles. Considering the mistakes he’s made this season that was a very good captains performance. Like everyone, was putting his body in front of everything. Heart in mouth moment with that penalty call but from a completely non biased point of view.. that would have been very harsh to give as there was no intent there when he tripped.

Comment #6Looking at the fixtures I only expected to have 1 point now, but we have 3.
Brilliant performance, just like some games last season.
Think big Andy has been telling Joe to put himself about a bit more.

Comment #7Longstaff calmed down second half and he and Hayden were solid. Since he has come back I get the sense that Longstaff is trying to justify a high price tag. Just needs to keep it simple and do what he was doing last season.
To be a top player, they do the basic and simple stuff consistently. That’s what sets them apart.

Comment #8After ten years long we finally got a manager who understand that Dummett was CB not LB. Look how monsterous he is at there XD

P.S. I’m still not Steve Bruce fan..for now.

Comment #9Atsu has to be MOM for the once piece of brilliance which ultimately won the game. His work rate was phenomenal too.

Comment #15Woo! I managed to get home in time for the second half. What a performance! The lads showed a lot of grit out there, and reaped the rewards. That 3 points will go a long way.
Very nice to see a happy blog, also. 😀

Comment #16Bruce should never have strayed from Benitezs formation. Any changes he makes or ideas of his own can only take the team backwards. While that was a Benitez performance through and through you have to give some credit to Bruce as Rafa rarely beat the big boys, especially not away.

Comment #17Great performance, a complete team effort.
Dummitt without doubt MOTM.
Thought Atsu was excellent.
Very impressed with Almiron’s defencive duties. He worked really hard.
Longstaff was good but clearly not fully match fit. But he and Hayden don’t need Shelvey.
Not sure about Krafth. He doesn’t seem to have the same attacking intent as Manquillo or Yedlin. Perhaps he was told not to venture too far.
All the other players looked solid. The formation looked sensible.

Comment #19I predicted a 3/4 nil defeat yesterday. So I’m happy to be proved wrong. So so wrong.
In my defence it was a prediction based on different formation and personnel. Still wrong though!!
I’ll be wary about being so negative going forward lol.

Comment #20Just come in from a day out but don’t suppose much has been happening.
I support the Toon and like to keep an eye on other sports like cricket just in case there’s anything interesting happen.
Dare say I’ll find out during the week what with it being a Bank Holiday and all that.

Formation and dropping of Shelvey has been justified.
Got to stick with it now. Longstaff and Hayden’s engine is mightily impressive and also crucial to the way we progress.
Special mention to Dummett and Schar who defended there flanks amazingly and won pretty much every header.
Joelinton looking promising, strong performance.

Comment #25Reilly – I respectfully disagree with you about Krafth. I don’t want to see him do badly and I hope he’s able to improve his game, but I thought he was poor today. Almiron got more blocks in from that fullback position than Krafth did.
He may have been overwhelmed by the occasion, but I’d like to see Manquillo come back in (which I didn’t think I’d ever say) for a little more defensive solidity. Hopefully Krafth will come good in time. I never want to see anyone in a Toon shirt struggle out on the pitch.

Comment #31Shelvey will forever be on the bench in this set-up.
Can’t afford his propensity to be lazy and negative body language. Players looked around today and knew all their teammates were giving their all. You see somebody like Shelvey walking or jogging leaving a hole in the formation and they won’t be able to help but think “why should I bother if he isn’t?” and it spreads.
Looks like yesterday’s man compared to the young, hungry pair in CM today and who performed so well together last season.
Whenever he gets a chance he needs to show he still wants it and not just for 6 months before an international tournament.
