After yesterday’s game, Steve Bruce gave a quick update on the players who were substituted. This is what he said as published in the Shields Gazette.
“It’s too early. Saint-Maximin’s a recurrence of a hamstring, and that’s a nightmare for us, unfortunately. The other ones, we’re not too worried about, although whether they’re going to be ready for Wednesday is another big call.
“Certainly, Saint-Maximin is the most difficult one, because he’s had a recurrence of a hamstring, which is a shame for him. Big Joe has run himself to a standstill, I think. Jamaal has got a calf, but we don’t think it’s too serious.”
For a moment in the second half, it looked like Joelinton had suffered a substantial groin injury. We were worried that he would have to come off. However, Joelinton got treatment on the pitch and was able to soldier on. He was substituted late in the game for Yoshinori Muto, but that looks like it was due to fatigue.
Jamaal Lascelles had to come off after stumbling in the box and injuring his calf. He too received treatment on the sideline but had to be replaced by Federico Fernandez. His injury doesn’t look too serious. We would imagine that Jamaal will be rested for the cup match on Wednesday as Fernandez can come in and do a job.
Allan Saint-Maximin– should not be risked this week
It’s a different story for Allan Saint-Maximin as he had a recurrence of his hamstring injury and was replaced after just 15 minutes. It is a shame for Allan as he had to miss last week’s match also. He will almost certainly miss the two games this week.
The good news is that Christian Atsu is back and was outstanding when he came on for Saint-Maximin. We also have Jetro Willems who can play on the left-wing if necessary. Or Jetro could slot in at left-back, and Matt Ritchie could be moved further up the pitch.
There’s always Miguel Almiron who played on the left last season opposite Ayoze Perez. The versatile Matt Ritchie could move to the right and play the inverted winger role that he has played most of his career.
Steve Bruce will have plenty of options to cover for Saint-Maximin. There is no need to rush him back. Hopefully, he can recover over the next three weeks and be ready for the match at Anfield in mid-September.

You would be better advised to stick to deciding whether to wear your braces and dungarees when you are Jib / Jeff from Benwell or to wear the full lingerie set with stockings, suspenders
Great way to win an argument

Mike Ashley ownership of Newcastle United is the disease, Steve Bruce only a very visible symptom

Have Newcastle fans got any expectations?
The media appear to want the debate to be all about the Newcastle fans wanting Steve Bruce sacked, with pundits and journalists rallying to his defence and declaring how stupid and premature such (supposed) demands are.
Mike Ashley is no doubt very happy as well if this is indeed the main debate – whether Steve Bruce should/shouldn’t be sacked and whether he does/doesn’t deserve more time.
In truth, Steve Bruce isn’t really what Newcastle fans are that bothered about and he certainly isn’t seen as the main figure in any debate.
Instead, he is seen as somebody who has taken a wrong turning and found himself on a blockbuster film set, suddenly finding himself needing to put in an Oscar level performance despite nobody telling him what his lines are.
You doubt any Newcastle fan would be upset if Steve Bruce was sacked or resigned, it is pretty much irrelevant though.
It is the Mike Ashley ownership of Newcastle United that is the disease, Steve Bruce is only a very visible symptom.
No other Premier League club would have even considered employing Steve Bruce if they had needed a new manager/head coach.
Newcastle United have appointed Steve Bruce for one of two reasons:
Mike Ashley thought he was a perfect choice for the job.
Or
Mike Ashley went through 10 (or more…) other candidates (as per media claims) and all of these more credible people refused to work for Ashley because of the way he runs Newcastle United, so he had no choice but to turn to a Steve Bruce.
Looking at those two scenarios above, why would there be any expectation of Mike Ashley replacing Steve Bruce with a more credible candidate?
Why would anybody credible want to come to Newcastle and work for this NUFC owner?
Rafa Benitez left Real Madrid and within two months saw the Newcastle vacancy come up when McClaren was sacked, he approached the Mike Ashley regime and offered his services.
Only Mike Ashley would then force that manager out of his club in a mad quest to prove that his way of doing things can cheat the system. Running a club with a skeleton staff, the key decisions made by unknown figures, with a belief that it doesn’t matter who the manager/head coach is just so long as they will agree with everything you tell them and a dream that blindly gambling on inexperienced overseas young players will lead to success on the pitch and massive profits when they are sold on.
Then repeat.

You’ve blown your cover and now we know you know fck all about football!
Why did Rafa leave Liverpool ? he wasn’t long at those clubs! He won the Europa League with Chelsea ! Every Real Madrid manager gets the sack! Liverpool well he’s a legend and everyone knows it except you!
Jib, Rafa told the regime he was leaving at the end of May and they sat on their fat fingers. There was no preseason because nobody but SB wanted to work for Charnley!
