Here is the team that Steve Bruce has just announced for tonight’s Carabao Cup tie against Leicester City.
Newcastle United substitutes for tonight’s @Carabao_Cup second round tie against @LCFC at St. James’ Park: Martin Dúbravka, Javier Manquillo, Jamaal Lascelles, Paul Dummett, Ki Sung-yueng, Sean Longstaff, Christian Atsu. #NUFC
— Newcastle United FC (@NUFC) August 28, 2019
It will be a debut at St James Park for Matty Longstaff as he is in the starting eleven with brother Sean on the bench. Christian Atsu and Jamaal Lascelles also make the bench despite Steve Bruce saying they were suffering a bit during his press conference. Jonjo Shelvey also gets a start in the midfield and has been selected as the captain.
We’ll have to see what the formation will be as there is only one forward selected. We would assume that Matt Ritchie will play on left and maybe Isaac Hayden will play on the right.
This is the team that Brendan Rodgers has selected.

Here's how the Foxes line up for #NewLei ?
— Leicester City (@LCFC) August 28, 2019
It’s a very strong side for Leicester City who are taking this competition very seriously. Ayoze Perez gets the start as he makes his return to St James Park.
Let’s hope the team Steve Bruce has put out can do the job tonight. It will be very tough, no doubt about that.

Comment #6Team looks a bit unbalanced to me, but we’ll see. Interesting to see Matty playing ahead of Sean, hopefully they’ll get some time on the pitch together.
That’s a lot of centre mids in one squad though.
Who was the last pair of brothers to play for NUFC? Did the Ameobi boys play together?

Jib and job just don’t sit well together. For years, the dole ran a sweep for who’d be first one to to get him to agree go for an interview. It was never won.

Comment #10I am thinking it must be a 5-3-1-1, but who is playing behind Muto if that is the case. Ritchie or Longstaff behind Muto possibly.
If it’s 5-4-1, how is Bruce fitting 3 central midfielders into a 4 man midfield—the symmetry would be off.

Comment #11Is that a 3-5-2 with Ritchie y muto up front or a 3-4-3 with Hayden or shelvey or M. longstaff on the wing?

If it wasn’t the Ameobis then it must’ve been the Robledo brothers.

Comment #14I thought of the Robledos, but that seems way too long ago.
Then again, it’s rare to get one person in a family talented enough to play professionally, let alone get two good enough and in the same team.

On the team: 1. I’d rather we didn’t roll out a 3-5-2 again. Although Muto is not so good at holding the ball up and might need assistance. Where is Ritchie playing in this setup?!

Disappointing to say the least.
It’ll get worse when the great unthinking voters put the bustards back in. Trouble is, there’s no cooling off periods and it’ll not be long before the penny drops with an earth-shattering thud. Too late was the cry.

Comment #19Matty plays slightly more defensively with Sean more advanced generally, but that may just have been a seniority thing.
He’s like his brother and can play anywhere through the middle of the pitch. Not sure if he might be playing the tip of a diamond tonight, seems to be the only formation that makes sense with Shelvey deep, Muto up top and the wing backs pushing on the flanks.
When was the last time we saw a midfield diamond? Terry Venables?

Comment #24NY Mag – got excited when you mentioned ‘Supergrass’ in the last thread, but you didn’t mean the band, so I simmered down again. Not enough Supergrass love in the world these days.
Think we’ll get a draw tonight and then miss out on penalties.

Comment #27If its 343 he’s probably asking Matty to play on the wing. If its same tactics as Norwich Willem’s or Ritchie is in the middle and Matty is taking over from Almiron. Looks a bad unbalanced selection no matter what he does.

Comment #28Nice to see that Bolton have been saved, but such a shame about Bury though. It’s scary to think that Bolton were in the Premier League not too long ago and look at them now. With Mike at the helm it could very well be us some day. I bloody hope not though.

Comment #30Only one striker in amongst the starting 11 and the bench. 3 central midfielder on the pitch, 3 defenders, and 3 wingers. Talk about unbalanced.
Only conclusion I can come up with is Bruce is hoping for another smash and grab 1-0 & defend for rest of the game.
The formation is anybody’s guess. But this is exactly why Bruce does not fill me with confidence like Benitez. Benitez formation and bench were set up for plan A B & C. Bruce and pardew is plan A and hope for best.
Yes a little early yet to be critical, so I will give him more time, but it doesn’t look like Bruce learnt much from the old master Fergie

The players are ready but it’s still very empty here at St James’ Park – haven’t ever seen it like this for a competitive game.
Those who are here, cheering as the players run out to Local Hero.
Still a very good buzz around the place .

Comment #39People criticising the selection in attack who would you play? Clearly Almiron and Joelinton run themselves into the ground on Sunday and are no way ready to play this and Saturday. Let me hear the magical selections Bruce could have made in attack? Btw before anyone selects them Gayle and Carrol are still injured.
