Who Was Newcastle’s Best Player Against Leicester City?

It was a heartbreaking defeat for Newcastle tonight as they bow out of another Cup competition in the early stages. Steve Bruce was forced to field a weakened side against Leicester City who made only two changes from the weekend.

The positives of this game are that the lads played well and fought hard. For the second match running, the lads put in a performance. The negatives are that three players were forced off with knocks including two left wing-backs in Matt Ritchie and Jetro Willems.

We saw some very good performances tonight from players who haven’t featured much. Matty Longstaff looks a player, and Jetro Willems had an excellent game. Though Jonjo Shelvey took a terrible penalty in the shoot-out, he was very good tonight.

The defense was excellent again with Fabian Schar, Federico Fernandez, and Ciaran Clark all putting in shifts tonight.

Though he didn’t get many touches, Yoshinori Muto scored a poacher’s goal for his second as a Magpie. Hopefully, that will give him some confidence going forward.

Bruce has actually been impressing me with his handling of young Matty Longstaff and Steven Pressley also with his handling of young Elias too

On the possession at home I agree normally that their would have been howls of derision from Norway and a few others here if this was under rafa .
    whats changed ?
Well under an elite coach we expected more and would have turned up expecting it.
Under Bruce the vast majority are just looking for a “good performance and not get humiliated’.
Had rafa still been here we would have been demanding a minimum to p 10 finish this year and rightly so.
yet now after 3 games many are just looking at games and plotting survival for another season so we can feast at the big boys table and just be happy we will be invited next year ….after 3 games in ??.
So ashely has pulled off another masterstroke in subtly lowering the expectations even further from the giddy heights of even thinking about cup runs or perish the thought getting involved with that messy European football nonsense.
Was a fantastic win at the weekend and I will give Bruce credit he took things on board and had a plan and got the players fired up to pull it off,but lets not gloss over the big picture here.
3 games into a season and we are just looking at hopefully being better that 3 other teams end of.!

Disclaimer .The above was written by someone who does not reside in the uk or attend matches on a regular basis so does not reflect the views of “true fans” as no one but them understands anything about their club.

Listened to it. We played well in defence. Scored a comedy goal. Perez got booed. Richie got injured. And we lost on Penalties again.

Just got back, Poor crowd on the whole which Is to be expected at a cup game (Strawberry corner in excellent voice though and sang the whole game).

Shelvey giving the ball away carelessly on many occasions.

Hayden should be the first name on the team sheet, superb tackler.

Willams was canny he may turn out ok after all.

Young Matty had a good game but was blowing out of his arse after 70 mins, (Hardly surprising as he ran his socks off all game.)

I understand now why Rafa didn’t play Muto more, simply cannot play the lone striker role, too weak in the challenge and can’t hold the ball up.

Fair play to Bruce for fielding a strong side but we need Lobby in the middle instead of Shelvey we simply don’t have a good enough team to carry what I regard as a luxury player.

I presume people are having a cut off me? Partly because most never understood why rafa AT TIMES annoyed me. If we had rafa tonite I wudnt criticise for that performance. We gave as good as we got, against s stronger team. I think we would have had the same result tonite if rafa was here. I think we’ll be slightly more attractive under Bruce, and probably slight less effective defensively. So far we are doing ok under Bruce and he has us motivated and still fairly solid. Am just judging off the radio live commentary. we seem to be playing somw decent football too and thatwas not something we werent known for last 2 yrs or before.

We’ve got a good solid defence but we were littered with poor judgement and passing.

The players appear to be playing for Bruce and I can’t fault their work rate.

We competed well but for the home team didn’t put them under any sustained pressure. Leicester played pretty much their best team as they want to win the cup and have no fear of relegation. 3 games in and we are already on the bones of our arse with players getting injuries and the perennial fear of relegation so early in the season. I’m not blaming Bruce as he couldn’t do much else and we did compete, but I never thought we’d win. Difference between these clubs? An owner with serious ambition and is building something long term. Until Ashley goes nothing will change and we’ll do nothing in the cups!

Rafa’s gone it’s not about what he did it’s what might have been if he had been back. That’s whats so infuriating, that Bruce will get what Rafa wasn’t allowed. We could have went onto be great.

Yup, agreed and you did the right thing in saying that you, like me, aren’t what ‘true’ fans see as a true fan.

There are some for whom supporting NUFC provides respite from pain and discomfort and those who travel thousands of miles season to support their club and others who go because they go and have done for years.

Then there are others that are wedded to the club for a variety of reasons but with circumstances dictating that we can’t get to matches, can’t brave hurricanes, tsunamis, floods and blizzards as some do and because if that have opinions that don’t carry any weight. To hell with those who define a ‘true’ supporter, we’ll just have to carry on doing what we’ve done for years, caring for Newcastle United.
