Devastating Injury Update From Steve Bruce

Steve Bruce has given his press conference this morning, and the news is quite dire on the injury front.

Matt Ritchie has suffered ligament damage to his right ankle from the Hamza Choudhury tackle on Wednesday. He will be out for up to two months. The news gets even worse as Jetro Willems, who also left Wednesday’s match with an injury, is a doubt for the Watford match.

If Willems can’t make the team tomorrow, we suppose that Paul Dummett will have to play left Wing-back. This is not where Paul’s strength lies as he has been outstanding on the left side of a back three. However, the local lad will come in and do a job if need be.

It also looks like Allan Saint-Maximin will be out for at least the next three weeks with his hamstring injury. With next week being an international break, he could only miss tomorrow’s game and the Liverpool one on September 14th.

Bruce also said that both Miguel Almiron and Emil Krafth will be assessed at training today, but both are still suffering from knocks. Almiron has an ankle problem while Krafth sustained a thigh strain against Leicester on Wednesday.

This is some terrible news for Matt Ritchie who has been an ever-present sight in our squad for the past three seasons. His passion and leadership will definitely be missed.

It does look like Joelinton will be fine after suffering a slight groin injury against Tottenham.

There is further news on the striker front as well as Andy Carroll is in line to make the squad for the game at Anfield on September 14th. However, Dwight Gayle is not making any progress with his calf injury and had to see another specialist yesterday.

He’ll be a miss, he’s been like a new signing since Rafa slotted him in the back 5

Who was the ref for the Leicester game ?
Was he a Premier League level ref or Sunday League level who though the tackle on Ritchie was just a bit of playful fun ?

I know Ritchie’s was unavoidable but it’s amazing how we can go 3 years with hardly any injuries and now barely in to the season we resemble the walking wounded. Didn’t think it would be that quick. Oh for a professional back room staff and sports science specialists.

Rotunda – it’s bizarre we’ve picked up do many injuries .. interesting that the players were doing a lot more running in training under Bruce and his team, wonder if that’s contributed to injuries ( obviously not Ritchie’s ).. could be that Ashley’s sold the 4G pitch Rafa insisted on and out back the old 3G pitch that he kept on standby in the shed 😀

Rotonda, it’s fine, cos The Overrated Frenchman thinks this worrying trend is ‘a crock’.

    So, that’s ok then.

    Phew!

“Dwight Gayle saw another specialist yesterday – but he’s no closer to making a return”

    That’s depressing.

    Rotonda,
No amount of sports science can prevent a tackle like that, what you can do though as the 8th richest club in the PL is provide a squad where, when an average PL player like Ritchie is ruled out it’s not critical to your survival.

We’ve probably sent the 4G pitches back just before the 3 year warranty expired.

Plenty of people used to use Matt Ritchie and his consistent starts as a stick to beat Rafa with. As far as I remember, this is his first extended period on the sidelines coming up since he joined us. It will be interesting to see how the team copes without him.

My guess is we’ll be missing a vital cog in our engine.
