Pundit Picks Newcastle Over Watford – However That Was Before Injury Update

Mark Lawrenson has picked Newcastle to defeat Watford on Saturday by a score of 2-1.

Here is what Mark says about the match in BBC Sport.

“It was a great win for Newcastle at Tottenham and what I would say to Newcastle fans is just support the team. Steve Bruce got a great result at Spurs, get behind him.

“I have really liked what I have seen of Joelinton and Miguel Almiron. If they get the service they look like they can score goals.

“For Watford, it is played three, lost three. I don’t think they will win this one but I don’t think they will be bottom of the table for too long.”

This prediction was made before Steve Bruce issued the concerning injury report this morning. During his press conference, Bruce stated that Matt Ritchie will be out for up to two months. He also set Allan Saint-Maximin’s return to be three to five weeks away.

Ritchie and Saint-Maximin join Andy Carroll, Dwight Gayle, DeAndre Yedlin, and Florian Lejeune as definite misses for the Watford match. While it seems like Joelinton and Jamaal Lascelles will return after missing the Cup tie on Wednesday, there are three other players who are doubts for Saturday. Emil Krafth, Miguel Almiron, and Jetro Willems will all be assessed during training today for their fitness for Watford.

If all of these players miss this game, it could be a very tough one for Newcastle. We, however, have noticed that Steve Bruce is very coy during his press conferences so we do hope that most of the players listed as doubts will be fit to play.

We think Miguel Almiron and Jetro Willems will be declared fit. We are not as concerned with Emil Krafth since we have adequate cover for him in Javier Manquillo. Though we do think that Krafth will also be fit for the important match against Watford.

Cloughie built European cup winning teams on players like Ritchie. Every team should have at least one like him!

I usually put us down as a win regardless but as I said loss last week against Spurs and we won I’ve said loss against Watford.

Obviously I want us to beat them!

The thing with Ritchie is he may not be the most talented player, but he contributes massively to the team. If a player enhances a team, which Ritchie undoubtedly does, then the team is obviously weaker when the player is absent.

This is a team game, after all and any team strives to be greater than the sum of its parts.

Bill, I’m not sure it works if you explain it

    😉

It’s like me with making predictions – I’m banned by order of the all-powerful carltoon.

Also not allowed to eat beef on Sunday matchdays, I seem to remember.

The thing is, asking us to name 3 players in his position who are worse than him is difficult, as by my maths the first 2 games this season he played as part of a 5 man midfield, meaning he technically played as a left midfielder, and against spurs he played as a wing back, so we are being asked to name 3 players whom have played those positions? That’s a big ask, possibly one for Opta.

Think Watford who are in a rut might feel the pressure on Saturday and resort to Leicester style fouling and aggression.

As fans we need to give massive vocal support and ensure that the ref hears what we think – who is it by the way ?

Disappointing to see that even after 6 years
Jail is still the same offensive excuse for a football fan writing the same bollix.

Pushy, he has become a fan like others who would be happy to see us go down because it might shift ashley. Doubt it. They revel in low attendances. It will also show him to be corrrect that benitez could never be criticised, ever ever ever. Laughable 🙂

Would be nice this weekend to win V Watford, maybe with some results going our way we could jump halfway up the table.

Worried about watford. A defeat would be damaging and tbey have a good manager who did a big job on limited funds. I wonder if watford were allowed criticise him on their blog? Presume so 🙂
