Almiron A Delight To Work With But Missed A Couple Of Big Opportunities Says Bruce

Miguel Almiron had another frustrating day in front of goal. He’s getting into the right places but is lacking composure when afforded chances to score. Today he missed a few clear chances, and it must be starting to affect his confidence.

Steve Bruce gave an interview to Sky Sports after the draw this afternoon. He initially spoke about the team’s poor day in front goal:

“It was an unbelievable start for them and disappointing for us of course. It took a while, but I was delighted with the response. I thought in the second half if there was anybody going to win it, it was us. We’ve missed a couple of glorious chances, big chances.

“At this level, we say it so often, you’ve got to take them. Unfortunately, you don’t create many opportunities, and we created one or two great ones in the second half and didn’t take them.”

There were a few chances that the lads would like to have back today. They were straight through on goal a couple of times but were unable to beat Ben Foster who had an excellent game for Watford.

We are getting a little concerned with Miguel Almiron who is contributing, but still waiting for that elusive first goal.

This was Bruce’s response when specifically asked about Miguel Almiron’s missed chances:

“Miggy’s had a couple of big opportunities. We’re just hoping he can get one in and get off running. He gives so much so the team. Of course, the longer that hangs over him, you know not scoring, the more anxious everybody becomes.

“He’s a fabulous footballer, a delight to work with. He’s just had two big opportunities today, which hopefully when he takes one will give him the confidence to get more.”

Miguel needs to just take his foot off the gas sometimes, and be a little more cerebral in his play. While his pace is an integral part of his game and vital to Newcastle’s attack, his decision making is hurried at times.

That is particularly the case in the box where he seems to be frantic. He has a lot of ability, and his direct runs are frightening for the opposition. If he can find the right moments to collect himself, he will start adding assists and goals to his game.

“The prem have decided to interpret it their own way and the linesmen have still been instructed to flag, even if it’s tight.”

but can the player play on and if he scores and it goes to VAR will it be a goal?

This will hang heavy around his neck until he scores, but I think once he scores, he will come good.
Shcar, is an abselute bargain. By far our best defender,
This new right back, hmm? Lots of question marks above his head, not sure he is premiership std, but time will tell

On twitter it seems the Perez knockers have moved on and are getting their knives out for almiron. Kid has barely played 15/20 games from the MLS.

Jane if they allow that I’d be fuming if it was against us. As lots of players play to the flag and may switch off when they see it. I know they should play too the whistle but if your a defender and the linesman’s flagging you’d probably take your foot off the gas a bit. I don’t see how they could then go back and award a goal. I guess it only takes once but then no one will listen when the ref blows

I said this when we were first linked to Joelinton but he is a player and imo, play to his strengths and he is the real deal. Had no service in terms of chances today and probably his weakest part of his game is what we seem to be looking at playing to for the majority, back to goal and win headers.

Some comments saying that he needs to stay up front but then when he did that v arsenal and Norwich, he had people commenting that he doesn’t run enough. I don’t know what to say about that but you’re not going to please everyone I guess.

Joelinton is a player who likes the ball to feet to actually play football. He showed in the buildup to the goal today what’s he’s about even though he didn’t finish the move. If schar wasn’t there he would have taken that position as you can see he went the long way round because of him.

He likes to pass and pretty much finds the man and keeps possession most of the time. Towards the end, he set muto free after a break. That was actually good play and good timing of the pass. This is what he’s about. Let him run the channels, drop deep and play as he sees fit and he’ll help create for us as long as we can get support and service around him.

Found today’s game quite frustrating though but Watford came with a plan to make it difficult which is fair considering their start to the season and their form. It was frustrating for me because I have said for ages on here when the onus is on us to have possession and attack we cannot break teams down, give away possession cheaply and get caught out on the counter. Every time. Yet I keep seeing people and comments saying as if it’s easy to attack a bit more and we can start cutting teams up or play exciting football.

Season is going to be a big struggle as expected and we will be one of the candidates for relegation amongst 4/5 other teams.

One good thing from today is we recovered from 1-0 down. Midweek and today. Players are behind the manager and each other and it’s good to see. Hopefully, players gel the more time they play while others are able to adapt to the league. Whether it all comes together in time is an altogether different question.

I discussed with somebody at the start of the season, can’t remember who, but when VAR was implemented in past tournaments like the World Cup, linesmen were told to let close offside decisions go and VAR will check them. However in the premier league, linesmen have been told to keep doing what they normally do and if they think it’s offside even if it’s close, the flag.

Quite stupid really as if you’re wanting VAR to work then you’re just shooting yourself in the foot. Atsu was through today and it was quite clear imo yet was called offside. How can VAR change that now. FA/Premier League are idiots lol.

Atsu and willems link up was good. Willems had some good deliveries but he’s always been good going forward. If he has sharpened his defensive game up since his younger days in Holland then we have made an astute signing.

Did we tactically over water sections of the pitch at half time to help the ball fizz across the surface because that’s exactly what happened when Atsu missed his tap in chance .

Longstaff looks cautious and that’s a reflection of his mind set after last years injury. No problem in understanding his position but looks like he needs to further build up his strength and confidence.

Rafa used to substitute at around 60mins , Bruce leaves it later, too late methinks.

For the first four games I thought we could have hoped for 5 points ( draws with Arsenal and Norwich and a won against Watford) . We’ve managed 4 but missed out on 6 .

Some people must be so easily pleased if they were satisfied with todays showing.
Was never gonna be easy but the Toon should be beating Watford at home FFS.
From what i saw online the atmosphere was non existing in the 1st half.
Maybe better if you actually go as tv is not good guide, but i wont go back as long as the slug shafts us year in year out.
Fans are hopefully beginning to see the light and stay away.
We always will have the diehards who believe it is their duty to go.That is their problem, but hopefully they also get pissed off with Ashlie and his methods of running our club.
Myself i would refuse free tickets to watch a fight against relegation every season
Sad to say i believe with Bruce in charge we will struggle again without much hope of survival.
May have had more confidence with the previous coach though, but he was not backed to take the club on to where we a club as big as Nufc should be.

“Where there is a clear and obvious goalscoring opportunity and the assistant referee is not certain whether the attacker actively involved is in an offside position, the assistant should delay indicating the offence until the phase of play has concluded.

Where there is a clear and obvious goalscoring opportunity and the assistant referee is certain the attacker actively involved is in an offside position, then the assistant should indicate the offence immediately.

In both of these situations the referee should wait to blow the whistle until the immediate phase of play has ended.”

    Joelinton 1 out of 10 .
We will not score goals with our front 3 from today.
Crossing was poor, Longstaff too slow and his passing was poor and caught in possession to many times.
Watford were poor so what does that make us.

Is Krafth the calibre of player Rafa had in mind to strengthen us at right back?

He looks solid, but on what we’ve seen so far, not as good as Manquillo on balance, nor as good as Yedlin going forward certainly. Still early days of course, but it is a curious signing.

Almiron will get dropped if he doesn’t start finding the net. What is it now, over 15 games? Could happen as early as next match as we look for goals. A front 3 of Muto, Joelinton, Atsu, and ultimately even a front 3 of Joelinton, Carrol and St Max. Need goals from your attacking players, even someone as industrious, dangerous and fast as Almiron.

Almiron and Atsu both kept coming centrally and at times you could’ve thrown a towel over them.

When we did hold some width we caused Watford problems, Willems got some canny crosses in, krafth got one for the goal but I’d prefer Manquilo there.

Our movement was poor all game and with Watford pressing high we had to lump it long far too much, I thought Bruce would have sorted this at half time by getting the players to keep their shape but it was the same in the second half.

Joelinton is a intelligent player and the goal was all his work, despite others trying their best to lose te ball.

Theres the makings of a team there but they need more discipline in the formation and not get drawn to the ball.

Not great, not terrible, not going to write home about it.

Playing with wingbacks can be very attacking, but you of course must play a higher line and push the wing backs on. Don’t understand why Krafth is in the side ahead of Manquillo, particularly at home.
