Improved Second Half Not Enough As Newcastle Draw 1-1 Against Watford

Both side came out unchanged after a 1-1 first half. Newcastle were on the front foot from the start but still suffered from the sloppiness displayed throughout the first half.

They would get better and fashion a couple of back to back chances after the ten minute mark as they started to take control.

Fabian Schar had a golden chance from an excellent Sean Longstaff free kick but he couldn’t get enough on his header as it dribbled wide of the far post.

Jamaal Lascelles had a long jaunt down the left before freeing Christian Atsu. Atsu then pulled the ball back to Almiron whose shot was well deflected by Watford’s Christian Kabasele.

After Watford had a decent opportunity that Dubravka was able to save, Newcastle would fashion a beautiful move. Joelinton would find Atsu who freed Willems down the right but his cross could find no takers in the box.

Watford would make a double switch in the 71st minute as Doucoure and Hughes made way for Isaac Success and Nathaniel Chalobah.

Emil Krafth would come off for Javier Manquillo in the 77th minute. This was a good move by Bruce as Krafth was having some issues going forward, With Isaac Success looking dangerous since coming on for Watford, we needed some fresh legs down the right.

Fabian Schar– first-half strike to claim point

Watford would get another decent half chance right after the change as Isaac Success headed a nice delivery from Tom Cleverly. Dubravka was able to stretch and tip the ball away.

Newcastle would make another switch with Yoshinori Muto coming on for Christian Atsu. Watford also brought Gerard Deulofeu on for Andre Gray.

It was one of those games as the ball just wasn’t going to go in. After a goal line scrum, the ball unluckily bounced into the hands of Ben Foster after both Lascelles and Muto were there with chances. Muto was also clear through on goal but was forced wide where his shot could only find the side netting.

Fabian Schar was replaced by Federico Fernandez late in the game as the injuries mount for Newcastle. It doesn’t look too serious though for Schar.

This is a disappointing result for Newcastle. They lacked cutting edge in the final third that could have secured a victory. They will find few opportunities this ripe for three points the rest of season.

The result sees Newcastle move out of the relegation zone into 14th position but it was two points lost today. A decent performance but one that just needed a little more from the lads to be considered good enough.

Lowest crowd at SJP since December 2012. And atmosphere was poor.

Krafth was poor enough, solid at the back but doesnt seem able to go by any player in attack. He doesnt seem comfortable being the one crossing it, constantly passing it back or to another player. I think you probably have to drop him for Manquillo next match. He really seems ineffective going forward. He needs more time though. Only two games ago half the ppl on here were writing Joelinton off.

But very frustrating match, poor performance
by mist of them, they should have won this comfortably. These dropped points in simple matches like this where we should be winning are going to kill us.

Atmosphere was very poor, I wish Joe and ASM and Miggy could get to feel what it’s like when its rockin just like the Man City match.

Almiron was frustrating, and I’m hoping he will turn a corner, Longstaff did nothing….Willems looks quality and Lintons hold up play was great again…gives me hope for him after his awful Norwich game

Has there been any reason given for the low attendance at this game? There was more fans at thw boycott game?

44,157 – 7 or 8 thousand down on last season and that won’t improve until we go on a winning run, for which don’t hold your breath!
    This squad is so poor!

Willems played well today as did Atsu who was possibly our best player.

Longstaff must still be struggling as he was poor again, slow with the ball and slower to react.

Almiron could play 24/7 and still not score the lad just doesn’t seem to have an end product in his locker the final pass is always poor or he scuffs goal scoring chances every time. Joelinton doing his thing chasing round with no support for a good 10 yards. We’ll be lucky to have 1 player score 10 this season

The big positive today was that Atsu/Willems combo.

Looked like they’d been playing together for years rather than for the first time. Need similar down the right, maybe a Yedlin/ASM combo can provide it when both fit in home matches like today.

You’re assuming Carroll is going to play more than 10 games! Not a chance! He’s a crock!

Jib – We’ll be lucky if Carroll is fit enough to suit up for 10 matches.

Unless injured could not get my head around substitutions
Longstaffe was having a poor game crying out for Shelvey to take his place
Ideal game for him to open their defence up
Thought Willian’s had a good game along with Atsu down the left
Also Joelinton battles away with no real help or balls into him
Got a nice touch on the ball and close control

I said before the season started our downfall will be scoring goals. That’s proving to be the case. You can’t lose 25 goals from your team and expect to continue winning.
It’s gonna be a tough season!

A weak poor quality squad with the majority of players of no interest to other Premier clubs. The odd quality like Schar, Longstaff is not good enough. Yet another season deliberatly set out to barely survive another relegation battle.
Like of Talk Shite Radio seems to think this is all we should settle for – yet the same shit station discussed Crystal Palace saying “Their supporters deserve more than comfortably surviving every year !”
The station who ranted Newcastle supporters “Expect too much !” a baldy asshole called Danny Mills who, if he isn’t talking hypocritical shit – is talking hypocritical shit. But the rest of the station – oh and the press…..and ex footballers….say the same.
But nobody questions them or calls them out – except Danny Baker. (The ONLY one who has defended the Newcastle fans – not even the local f****** football reporters)

    Disappointing result today!

No disrespect to Norwich or Watford but we really need to be beating these teams.

Beating Spurs was a bonus and perhaps we deserved a point from the Arsenal game but in reality we should have at least six points in the bag now

I saw on BBC TV shots plenty of empty seats – Take notice Mr Ashley!!!

    @ toonbrother

The reluctance to play Shelvey stems from the fact that he is lazy defensively and doesn’t work hard enough off the ball.

It’s not just coincidence that the one game Shelvey started and played the entire match we conceded three goals (@ Norwich).
