Summer Target Stays At French Club But Remains On The Fringe

After a summer of speculation for Lille midfielder Thiago Maia, the Brazilian has remained with Lille despite receiving numerous lifelines elsewhere. There were reports late in the English transfer window that Newcastle were close to an agreement for the 22-year-old.

It was claimed that it was up to Thiago to chose between joining Genoa or Newcastle. However, nothing happened on either front. In late August, Sampdoria jumped in the fray for the midfielder as well. Thiago has decided to remain at Lille.

There is a report in La Voix Du Nord that says that Maia did not want to leave the Ligue 1 club because it had qualified for Champions League football.

Lille manager Christophe Gaultier, who was once linked as an Alan Pardew replacement, has managed to get Lille into the Champions League by finishing second last season. That was despite taking over a struggling side halfway through the season before when they just survived relegation to finish 17th.

The fact that Lille are now in the Champions League seems to have influenced Thiago Maia’s decision to remain at the club. However, it has not changed the fact that Gaultier just does not rate the midfielder.

After starting only 11 games in Ligue 1 last season, Maia has played just 44 minutes for Lille this season. He may get his Champions League football, but he’ll most likely be watching it from the sidelines.

    Nufc-83,
So a bit of it couldn’t have been spent on a fit striker with PL experience to take the pressure off Joelinton?

OP yes I think for resale but if we do buy a player who doubles in value then it means they have been great for us. It happens to every team even the top teams.

Jail I don’t disagree. Do we know Rondon was willing to come without Rafa though?

Then it’s about getting the right player who fits your description then. Who was available?

I don’t know, I’m not a scouting team, surely there was a better stinker out there who would be better than an injured Andy Carroll.

It’s hard for a player to reach his full potential in a struggling side which we always are.

For me Joelinton wasn’t the right player, he may become the right player, that’s a gamble.

Buying players hoping they reach their potential by throwing them in the deep end is ridiculous, sink or swim. With no real back up as the other foward isn’t reliable.

If it’s a player U25 with PL experience and going to get you 15 goals then that could have been Tammy Abraham but that would have cost 30M, better to get a broken Carroll for free, even though he might not play until you’re entrenched in the bottom three.

What goes around keeps going around doesn’t it? Sorry to see We posting an anti-boycott rationale. Not exactly a big picture stance that one. There’s a huge amount of point-missing to be had regarding the effects of boycotting Universe Ashley – it’s not about seeing swathes of empty seats on TV or about losing a whole Joselu of money in match day take over a season. It’s about adverse publicity. Distaste for Sports Direct as a whole by association with said publicity. It’s about people becoming aware that this man is a parasitic worm feeding off the club. It won’t harm the team or the club per se, Ashley has and will take care of that job and it won’t be any fault of any protesting fan. No, the players will still receive money and play professionally for their house wages. If they are so precious that relegation or survival depends on how loud the support is, then they are too feeble to be footballers. Ashley is the ruiner, the fans should never be blamed for his actions.

OP So I’m guessing players like Haller are a bad buy to you? Most top strikers in the league have come from a foreign league at some point.

Think Ed was only pointing out that financially it makes little difference to Ashley and he’ll just allow Bruce to spend less , it will be noticed by players though …. Other side of this is that a lot of people have just had enough of the year in / year out Ashley’s running of the club especially on top of the alleged sale , Rafa leaving and the appointment of Bruce – a lot of match going fans have lost the will to spend up to £100 on a match day to be served up no hope pie

He has Hernandez along side him ffs to give him time to settle if needed, we have two broken strikers one of whom isn’t PL standard anyway.

Don’t see why signing Joelinton indicates Ashley is staying long term. He has to put assets on the pitch no matter his intentions, particularly now we have lost Rafa, and Joelinton will be viewed by Ashley as an appreciating asset, so a good buy either way, from his perspective.

Coulda kept Perez, sold Gayle, bought Rondon, Joelinton and St-Max, and signed Willems on loan.

I think they should let me run the show.

I’d a put that to Rafa, and if he didn’t fancy it I’d a told him to get on his bike n’all. 🙂

I’d like to see comparative stats between Longstaff’s and Shelvey’s work rate and distance covered, I reckon there’ll not be much difference between them.

Start adding in completed passes, attempted shots and shots on target then I reckon Jonjo will edge it.

Sean would probably be ahead on his tackles.

No way shelvey covers a similar distance to Longstaff.

83 snap! He was recorded to run a good few more miles can’t remember how many in the Spurs match. Of course Shelvey doesn’t need to run as much, because his passing is far superior.

If Bruce gets a few wins with a half decent brand of football we could hit crowds of 47/48k. Precisely zero notice will be taken of that in the mainstream media. We need a real buyer. Anything else is just smoke mirrors and noise.

I honestly think this HD sports jumper idea would have a major major impact. Anyone involved with the fan groups I urge you to put that forwards Imagine 45k fans with JD sports jumpers it would mean Ashley is paying for advertising for a direct competitor. I think that would drive him out.

Well you wouldn’t get past the security. I get my bag searched every match. You would have to put it on under your clothes then strip off when you get in. It would work if a group did it together. I’ve seen that happen at sports events trying to promote a brand.
