Newcastle have eight first-team players whose contracts run out in just two years. Some of these players are core members of the squad like Fabian Schar, Isaac Hayden, Jonjo Shelvey, and Matt Ritchie. The other four are Ciaran Clark, Christian Atsu, Dwight Gayle, and DeAndre Yedlin.
Newcastle will obviously want to sign Schar and Hayden to new contracts. That should be a top priority for the club at the moment. However, what about the other six.
There is a report in the Mirror that claims Isaac Hayden, Jonjo Shelvey, DeAndre Yedlin and Matt Ritchie are in line for contract talks.
However, the report goes on to say that cashing in on Shelvey and Ritchie is also an option.
The bottom line is that Newcastle have a lot of work to do with contracts. Like their work in the transfer market, Newcastle have not shown any urgency in getting the contract situation sorted. They run the risk of losing compensation on players if they don’t get their act together soon.
The following players have less than a year on their deals; Federico Fernandez, Ki Sung-yueng, Javier Manquillo, Karl Darlow, and Rob Elliot. Andy Carroll also is signed on for just one year, but his is a different situation altogether.
The club need to decide who they want to keep and get them signed up quickly. They also need to offload any players they have no intention of holding onto. This winter there will be funds available for transfers. So if Newcastle do bring any players in, they will have to offload some players.
Fabian Schar– top priority to get him signed long-term
We would like to see Fabian Schar, Isaac Hayden, Matt Ritchie, Javier Manquillo, Christian Atsu, Karl Darlow, and Federico Fernandez all given new deals. While we really like Jonjo Shelvey, he just doesn’t fit into this team.
If Newcastle can recoup some fees for Ciaran Clark, Dwight Gayle, DeAndre Yedlin, as well as Shelvey that could add nicely to the reported £50m Bruce will have next summer according to the Mirror. The one stipulation being that Newcastle stay up.
We would expect that Rob Elliot and Ki Sung-yueng would just run down their current deals this summer. That would give Newcastle six squad places to really overhaul the club this summer for the better.

Undermotivated players with no long term commitment to the club? Most likely.

Comment #85Huddersfield fined £50,000 for the kit in pre season.
I can’t understand why they’re being fined, what difference does it make, it wasn’t a league or cup game.
Its like the guy from the mr muscle advert flexing his muscles, more serious issues are given lip service.

There’s always been enough blogs on here from different bloggers giving details of protests, meetings etc. to advise those interested of anti – Ashley action. Ed, from the USA could not be expected to get involved in them.
Interestingly, when you were involved in it, the focus was more anti the managers than anti – Ashley, quite wrongly in my opinion, and it largely let the fat slug off the hook.

Comment #91Finally catching up. See the bar has been set for disparaging behavior. Nice to know we can say whatever we want and the worse that will happen is a deleted post. Not the first post that particular individual has had deleted. Really disappointed that someone can continue to act in that manner and its accepted with no consequence.
Sorry Ed, Neil and the wife but once you start accepting things like that there is no going back. Now that all the posters here no what is tolerated it will only get worse. A bit disappointed I am.
