Steve Bruce Weighs In On What Defender Needs To Continue Doing For Elusive England Call

Steve Bruce knows all about the frustration of not getting an England call-up, having never had the honor to play for his country in his career.

At Newcastle, he has a couple of players who are knocking on Gareth Soughtgate’s door in Isaac Hayden and Jamaal Lascelles.

Isaac recently spoke about what he felt he needed to do to give him the best chance of getting into the England squad.

Basically, Isaac understands that he needs to be playing regularly and putting in performances at Newcastle to give him the best chance for an international call-up.

Steve Bruce feels the same way about Jamaal Lascelles as his comments in the Chronicle attest.

Jamaal’s situation is slightly different from Hayden’s, however. Lascelles has been playing regularly in the Premier League for over two seasons while Isaac has only just started his run of games for Newcastle.

This is what Bruce has said about his captain and an England call-up:

“That is the next big step for him.

“You have just seen Tyrone Mings appear from nowhere.

“All you can do is keep playing well on the biggest stage.

“I have been very, very pleased with him.

“The next step is now Gareth Southgate. And Gareth is welcome to his opinion.

“Jamaal just has to keep plodding away.

“The good thing for him is that he is playing every week, which can only help.”

Jamaal is certainly playing week in and out in the top flight for Newcastle. Since our promotion back to the Premier League, Jamaal has made 73 appearances. That includes the 4 for this season.

In contrast, Tyrone Mings who is about 8 months older than Lascelles, has made only 21 appearances in England’s top flight. However, Mings has come on in his career and is playing very well at the moment. He also is a bit more similar a player to John Stones who is missing these EURO Qualifiers due to injury.

Michael Keane and Harry Maguire were the central defensive pairing in England’s 4-0 win yesterday over Bulgaria. Joe Gomez from Liverpool was also called up for these internationals.

Like Hayden with Declan Rice and Jordan Henderson, Lascelles path is blocked at the moment. However, both Isaac and Jamaal are leaders and will know they need to just keep putting in the performances for Newcastle.

Top sales are down due to geordies not wanting to buy owt associated with ashley.
Id rather buy a alternative supporter top then fund ashleys empire.

All you explained was that ashley has systematically
Made us mediocre so we cant get rid of him .
He has be responsible for one third of the clubs relegations in its history.
It is because of him commerical revenue has not grown.
It is because of him the lack of atmosphere.
And it is because of ashley people are not attending matches.

It is because of ashley the facilities are not invested in.
It is because of ashley SJP is poorly maintained.
It is because of ashley we will not grow to our full potential.
Its will be because of ashley the death of NUFC.

Genj your question was why has Everton and West Ham aligned with our commercial revenue which was obvious and what I answered. Again I agree with you that our lack of progress is down to Ashley nobody else.

Nufc you stated it was the lack of champions league football.
So i ask how often have west ham and everton been in the champions league in the same period?
You didnt answer anything just put up a poor excuse as to why the club has not grown when every other club in the prem has at the same rate of growth.
Surely we should of grown, but we havnt at all and at many points we have went backwards to levels seen in 1997.
Ashley a great business man yeah right.

Genj you actually explaining the answer I gave and the reason why we have not grown so what are we actual debating? Your question was why have the other clubs caught up to us in commercial revenue when you have just explained my answer. It’s all down to the terrible running of the club from Ashley.

I will try again. When Ashley took over the club we were consistently playing in Europe had major global support due to the period of entertainers etc. Our commercial revenue was high and up there with the top clubs in football. Since Ashley has taken over his shocking ownership has seen us relegated twice while teams like West Ham and Everton are improving their global brand etc. This is why we now find ourselves on par with them in terms of commercial revenue. It’s ever so simple.
