BBC pundit Mark Lawrenson has predicted that Newcastle will fare better than last season’s 4-0 defeat at Liverpool. However, not too much better as he has us losing 3-0.
This is what Lawrenson has written in his prediction of the match:
Newcastle’s best performance of the season came in their win at Tottenham before the international break, when they circled the wagons.
I am sure Magpies boss Steve Bruce is going to set up his side the same way, camped in their own half to try to stifle Liverpool, but I don’t see it working this time.
The Reds are playing extremely well, and they have got more ways of scoring than most other teams that Newcastle will face. Jurgen Klopp’s side will find a way through.
We suspect Newcastle will try to do against Liverpool what was so successful at Spurs. We don’t have Matt Ritchie for this one and instead will rely on Jetro Willems at left-back. We should, however, have everyone else who played significant minutes at Tottenham available for this one, with the possible exception of Miguel Almiron who still needs to be assessed for fitness.
We are not expecting much results-wise against Liverpool but of course, want to see the lads give a committed performance. Jurgen Klopp has world-class talent at his disposal and having lost the title last year by such a slim margin, he will have his team focused. The league leaders did have the bulk of their squad take part in internationals the past few weeks, so this could be the best time to play them.
Mo Salah is one player who understands the importance of every match when you are fighting at the top of the table for the title. This is what he said about the game this Saturday as posted by the Chronicle:
“Newcastle is always tough home or away, the way they play. They have a good team and good players and a good coach. We just need to focus on ourselves and do our job.
“Last season we lost the Premier League by one point and just need to keep focusing on each game right now. We don’t need to lose any points.”

Comment #4Jail earlier, Bruce on Almiron – “Is he a wide player? Is he a No10? Is he a midfielder? I think that’s the one”
Oh please help me gawd!
I think you are the one who needs help Jail if you don’t understand Bruce’s point.
In the MLS he played as a 10, for Paraquay he plays LW and he has the energy and work rate to play as a midfielder.
Bruce is dead right that if he plays in his current role for us he needs to start scoring. If not he might be more beneficial to the team in a different position.
What part of that didn’t you get?
Or is it just mocking Bruce for the sake of it?
I’ve got a fair guess which it is.

Is Ritchie a LB, WB, LW or RW?
Is Dummett a LB or CB?
Is AC a crack, a crock or a crook?

Matt Ritchie is primarily a right winger who has become very adept at playing LWB unlike Ryan Taylor who who was murdered many times down that left hand side, a properly managed football club would back their manager with players so that right sides midfielders didn’t have to play LB.

Ritiche does an outstanding job for us in the role of lwb but the likes of having to play anita at lb or colback at lb.
It has been a problem for a long time.
