Steve Bruce has confirmed that there will be money available in January if needed. He did not mention any amounts, but it looks like the club can bring in a quality player or two if need be.
This is what Steve Bruce has said in the Shields Gazette when asked about a January transfer kitty:
“Yeah, there’s a little bit.
“I think the really good thing now is to concentrate on the 25 we have got, and get the best out of them, so you put that away. It always is ‘how can we improve?’. I think that’s the key.
“You see the difference in an Almiron or a Joelinton. That little bit of extra quality which comes in is hopefully what we’re looking for now.
“We’ve got a nucleus of a very good squad. Rather than five or six, maybe it’s important to go for one or two. I think that’s the way forward. We’ve got good players here.
If we can just keep adding to the quality of them, then I think that’s the way forward.”
This winter we would like to see Newcastle make some moves to strengthen the squad. However, a lot of that will depend on where they are in the table. It will also depend on how the team is coping in terms of injuries.
Steve Bruce– wants to add quality not quantity in future windows
One player that could be high on the list is Hull City’s Jarrod Bowen. With his contract running out next summer, Hull could be forced to lower their £20m asking price for the 22-year-old.
However, for Newcastle to bring anyone in, they will have to make room for them in the squad. The club have not been very successful recently in offloading fringe players as they currently have three on the books that are outside the 25 man squad.
Newcastle does have a solid nucleus as Bruce attests. However, they need to get them tied down to new deals. Players like Isaac Hayden and Fabian Schar only have two years remaining on their contracts.
Next summer could also be one of transition for this squad with so many players who could leave or will have only one year remaining on their deals. Many of those should be replaced by players of higher quality.
