Superb Willems Strike Not Enough As Mane Has Reds Up 2-1 At The Half

It will be a daunting task for Newcastle to get anything from this game. However, it will not be impossible. The lads have been punished for a couple of lapses at the back. They have played well but Liverpool have proven too strong as they closed the half.

Newcastle were compact and organized against the league leaders to start the game. In the seventh minute, Jetro Willems launched a rocket into the top corner with his so-called weaker right foot. What a strike! It was a nice pass from Christian Atsu to find Willems on the left.

The lads looked very confident and composed in the first 20 minutes and handled everything Liverpool threw at them. Joelinton continued his superb hold-up play but it would begin to slip for the lads as Liverpool came alive.

They started to apply the pressure after the 20 minute mark but there was still some excellent defending from the lads. The team kept their shape and made some crucial blocks and headed clearances. There was a penalty shout for Liverpool as Jamaal Lascelles pulled Joel Matip down in the box. It was not given by referee Andre Mariner.

That may have inspired Liverpool as Sadio Mane was able to even the score with a stellar strike into the top hand corner in the 28th minute. It was all Liverpool after that.

Klopp was forced into a change as Divock Origi made way for Firmino in the 36th minute. He made an immediate impact for the Reds. Atsu was easily dispossessed in midfield and Firmino put the ball through to Mane. It was poor from Martin Dubravka as he was unable to claim the ball which Mane found for an easy tap in.

We’ll see if Bruce has any answers to stem this Liverpool attack in the second half. He’ll have to try to get Joelinton and Almiron more involved for any chance of a result today.

    KRAFTH IS SHITE!

    UTTER SHITE!

Nothing to him. 3rd best RWB we have.

    Excellent from Atsu.

Had a similar chance on his debut and never looked like scoring either. What exactly are his strengths? He’s completely basic. Not a good defender, not fast, not good going forward, not good on the ball.

Its starting to look more and more like what we are seeing from Almiron is all were gonna get. Everyone’s waiting for him to come alive, but hes been here long enough really if he was gonna show more.

Least Manquillo has a bit of fight in him and is a notch up defensively and on the ball.

Yedlin still by far the most dynamic RWB we have. Hope he’s fit soon.

Atsu is a better footballer than greyhound Almiron. Created so much more this season in fewer minutes. Almiron has no touch, vision or variation.

    All over.

It was coming. Schar down injured I think.

Nobody at fault for that one. Just split us open with clever, high-speed intricate play.

Just keep it at this now. No disgrace if it finishes 3-1. Just annoying given we were 1-1 and looking comfortable until an individual error.

Brighton a must win. Need Yedlin, Ritchie, Carroll and ASM back pronto.

Just not good enough. It’s as simple as that, Liverpool have built up a very good team and we are not in the same class of players as they have.

Joelinton needs to hold up the ball or steer into the channels, no good just heading up in the air.

We have nothing in midfield, shelvey is just pedestrian like.

If there is money in Jan we need a creative midfielder with pace.

Still early in the season so time yet to get some pattern to our play – no panic

    Think just cramping up.

Get Yedlin and ASM on the right side of the pitch together and we’ll have more balance and creativity coming from that side.

Bambams, have to agree. It took time last year for us to develop any kind of attacking cohesion and I’ve no doubt we’ll do the same this year but like we all thought throughout the summer, the makeup of the midfield is just not balanced

Almiron might be fast but he has no idea how to use it. Can;t time runs in behind and with the ball at his feet he just runs at full tilt, has no concept of slowing down to then knock it past a man, throwing feints etc, just head down sprint into blind alleys with no picture in his head for how an attack will develop. Then he invariably can’t protect the ball or pick anybody out and we lose possession.

Atsu might not be as quick as he once was, but his ball control and football brain is so much better than Almiron’s. More agile and stronger too. Can twist and turn, slow play down to then gain a yard and link up with teammates to build attacks.

Need a Yedlin/ASM partnership on the right wing asap.

I know it has no bearing on the result but in getting so frustrated with these offside calls. What was the point in all the money being invested in VAR if it isn’t being used properly. We are the only league that still asks the linesmen to flag when it’s tight.
