Superb Willems Strike Not Enough As Mane Has Reds Up 2-1 At The Half

It will be a daunting task for Newcastle to get anything from this game. However, it will not be impossible. The lads have been punished for a couple of lapses at the back. They have played well but Liverpool have proven too strong as they closed the half.

Newcastle were compact and organized against the league leaders to start the game. In the seventh minute, Jetro Willems launched a rocket into the top corner with his so-called weaker right foot. What a strike! It was a nice pass from Christian Atsu to find Willems on the left.

The lads looked very confident and composed in the first 20 minutes and handled everything Liverpool threw at them. Joelinton continued his superb hold-up play but it would begin to slip for the lads as Liverpool came alive.

They started to apply the pressure after the 20 minute mark but there was still some excellent defending from the lads. The team kept their shape and made some crucial blocks and headed clearances. There was a penalty shout for Liverpool as Jamaal Lascelles pulled Joel Matip down in the box. It was not given by referee Andre Mariner.

That may have inspired Liverpool as Sadio Mane was able to even the score with a stellar strike into the top hand corner in the 28th minute. It was all Liverpool after that.

Klopp was forced into a change as Divock Origi made way for Firmino in the 36th minute. He made an immediate impact for the Reds. Atsu was easily dispossessed in midfield and Firmino put the ball through to Mane. It was poor from Martin Dubravka as he was unable to claim the ball which Mane found for an easy tap in.

We’ll see if Bruce has any answers to stem this Liverpool attack in the second half. He’ll have to try to get Joelinton and Almiron more involved for any chance of a result today.

I was saying last night about Krafth. Why was Manquillo even dropped???. The games I’ve watched Krafth is definitely not ready for the PL. Bring back Yedlin as a wing back.

First 2 goals were carbon copies of each other, we then made 2 defensive errors and missed a bit of a sitter.

All is not lost, we play that well and we’ll be comfortable mid table – probably top half.

Well give him a chance he might come good. Just ease him into the team not throw him in the deep end. roll on next match.

i thought the hole point of VAR was to make things clearer for the ref . Muto was not off side they could of let him run through if he scored any doubt refer it to VAR . they didn’t even do it …

Best we could hope for after chasing shadows for 99 % of the afternoon. Can’t gift goals at this level. Going to be yet another long season as the injury list grows.

I thought Shelvey had a good game, lots of energy and hardly a pas out of place, not our MOM but given who we were playing he did OK.

Linesmen need to be docked their pay for making incorrect calls. That’s two goal scoring opportunities in this match and one in the last from bad offside decisions.

An ok performance. Did better than many do coming here.

Dubravka moment was fatal. Krafth is a waste of £5m. Didn’t need a RWB and certainly not a bang average one.

If Almiron starts next weekend it has to be his last chance before somebody else is given his spot. Isn’t looking like scoring and doesn’t creating anything, hopefully that changes against Brighton.

Krafth does not werk for me, Manquillo a far better player, it took half a game for Brucie to realise that, why?

Carltoon we can’t afford gung-ho Yedlin against this kind of opposition but Manquillo certainly better than Krafth

VAR what a waste of time
Muto should have went on and tried to stick the ball in the net then wait on the VAR decision
I know Almiron got booked against Watford but I think it is a chance you have to take

I must be missing something with him fella, I just dont see what he brings at the minute.

I know he needs runners but playing so deep in this setup just doesn’t work for me.

    Cheers mate

Not disappointed with the performance today, thought we gave it everything.

I’m not a fan of Shelvey but this is a game that he can’t influence and he only got the nod because of the injury to Longstaff so I’m not angry at him for his display, he was better then I thought he would be.

Atsu and Joelinton look really good so far, seen some negative comments about Joelinton’ hold up play but I thought he was excellent at it up against Matip and Van Dijk. Atsu with another assist and just overall a great performance.

Almiron is so disappointing, he has great qualities but he’s definitely not suited to this league. You need more then pace and enthusiasm.

Good subs by Bruce who didn’t get much wrong apart from keeping the shocking Krafth on the pitch that long.

And honesty I’m sick to death of the linesmen flagging tight calls. It’s so ridiculous when you have VAR.

Is it just me but it appeared that whenever there was a lose ball it went straight to a LPool player, don’t think it was just down to work rate either.

    Irish Rob,

You can’t blame Bruce for the Ritchie, Longstaff or Schar injuries.

Ritchie was a bad foul, Longstaff a freak training accident and Schar a twisting slip.

Ii’s when players get groin, hamstring and calf injuries that you question training methods and warm up routines.

Blaming Bruce for the others is just sticking the knife in.
