Potential Winter Target Has Goal Bonanza On Saturday

We did a report on PSV forward Donyell Malen in July as a suggested target for Newcastle United during the summer.

The former Arsenal product was also mentioned as a possible winter target by the Chronicle this past week.

The 20-year-old made his international debut in the 2020 Euro Qualifier against Germany on September 6th. The Netherlands won the match 4-2 and Malen got one of the goals in his debut. He also got his second cap a few days later in the Netherlands 0-4 win at Estonia.

On Saturday, Malen took his international momentum into PSV’s Eredivisie match against Vitesse. The young striker put in a dominant display as he scored five goals in PSV’s 5-0 win.

Donyell Malen is an Arsenal Academy product who turned down a contract extension with Arsenal two summers ago.

Despite being a valued youngster, Arsenal couldn’t convince Malen to resign with them. He opted instead to join PSV in his native Netherlands. Last season he was able to break into their first-team primarily as a left-winger scoring 11 goals.

This season he was given the number 9 shirt which was vacated by former Magpie Luuk De Jong, who joined Sevilla in the summer.

Malen just signed a new deal with PSV on August 6th which extended his contract until 2024. He had just one year remaining on his old deal. We are unsure of PSV’s valuation of Malen, but he is definitely a player to watch out for.

Nufc83 I think with rafa you got a very cautious style of play based on compactness and counter attack. It wasnt great to watch but it was fully watchable. He needed to be supported to buy the sort of players he wanted , who understand positioning and defence or can learn from him and have the pace to counter attack. Ashleys stupidity was in part to not realise that rafa’s philosophy wudnt have cost a bomb, and certainly no more than the kind of bucks chucked around by everton villa and co. Despite what some of the well known liars on here say, I didn’t want Bruce. Post rafa I wanted a euro coach like nagelmann or farke as they wud be used to the sort of recruiting model used by ashley and bring a definite philosophy. With SB i’m hoping we can evolve to being tight and playing a better brand of football but its really only based on hope, not belief.

To secure the lilkes of Malen the scouts have to see his potential and sign him before he goes and scores five goals in a match at which point every club knows about him and then he’s spoilt for choice in the transfer window.

Munster I agree with you and mike Williamson I get that defensive style. I guess it’s more when we are in possession I think even with Rafa we didn’t look like a team who had a plan to work the ball. When you say play on the counter I think of a team like Leicester when they won the league. Vardy on the shoulder with quick breaks and balls turning defenders. They had a style going forward and everyone knew what it was. I don’t think we have ever had anything when in possession.

Mindshaft i’m not sure they even bought many players. Their composure under pressure was amazing, passing quickly under pressure. Farke wud be a fantastic manager at nufc. Its a strange game though. Watford had a great season and werent big spenders and their manager is gone. Wolves spent loads and have a hot property mgr and are in the relegation zone I think for now anyway. At least they have ambition though unlike us.

When is the last time we actually played a game with decent possession and football and looked like we knew anything?

Its been like atleast 10 years. 10 years of atrocious football.

This is Christophe Henrotay relaxing last week at his luxury pad in Monaco
Unfortunately for him today he is in a cell in Brussels
His agents company Elite Football is accused of laundering money
In particular the transfer of Mitro from Anderlecht to the Toon
A couple of his other clients are familiar to us as well.
    Sebastien Bassong and Yohan Cabaye
I wonder how far back this goes?

Nufc83 its not something we talked about much on here. Ie rafa’s approach to attack, or philosophy beyond compact defence. Two key approaches were defenders who could pass long and accurately and wide men who squeezed in rather than out. It wasnt great but it was fine and getting better I think. The beauty with rafa was that if you got the lead there was a great chance of a win. I thought the leicester away result was a stunning display and the noise of the fans afterwards was great.

Toon getting the wrong end of the stick as usual. It really is exhausting trying to explain simple things to such an individual. I loved Rafa and thought he was great for the club as I have always said. The question the adults are discussing is did we have an attacking Philosophy like you see with what people consider to be more modern/progressive managers.

You have to love the wording.

“Potential Winter Target Has Goal Bonanza On Saturday”

Technically every footballer on the planet could be a “potential winter target”, because just like Malen they also have IN NO WAY been looked at by the club.

Be very careful what you say
The Belgian media take great pains to say that the clubs

Wake up and smell the coffee about kids who are not from newcastle supporting other teams who have far more glamour associated with them. The way of the world. Its why you see kids in barca shirts everywhere for the last 10 years and more. And to u and jail, obviously u wont want to believe this but I badly wanted my kid to support nufc. But i’m not going to force it obviously, not that its even possible. Guys like you need to stop the blog hard man act and get over yourself.

hibbit nails it on the head. All these younger more progressive managers with better philosophies than Rafa out there and the owner goes for Steve Bruce. Shy would Farke be a great manager here, the managers input to philosophy and recruitment is minimal. You ask for a fast attacking RWB and you get Krafth because an XL spreadsheet tells you that if a Swedish international is only 5M pounds then if he has a decent season he will be worth 12M in two years time, so that philosophy that relied on WB’s goes immediately out of the window and you have to start again.

83 be ready for plenty of abuse. If you question rafa, even if you still like him, the noisy boys will get very cross and selectively choose and attacks certain words or phrases you use, rather than the general meaning. Thus if ask what rafa’s philosophy was in attack, it will be taken as an attack on rafa, which it isnt. Anyway I put out a long post on rafa a few days ago which was largely positive ( to reasonable readers anyway ) and clarified where I stood and said I wud shut up so i’d better do just that.

It took SFA three seasons to get it right at Man U and he never had to start in the Championship, the way we played in the second half of last season imo he was on the way to building a successful team after two seasons of playing the foundations, we can only judge him on how successful he was by the success of any managers that replace him. If Steve Bruce clicks, gets us playing good football and gets past the fifth round of the FA cup then we can look back and say Rafa wasn’t all he was cracked up to be.

    Hibbit,
I’m gonna say if we can’t beat Brighton we will be bottom. Bruce has shown he knows how to do a Rafa against the big teams, but we will have a better picture what his style is against the other 13 teams soon. If we do beat Brighton I think we can be in about 18th place come Jan. Funny how Bruce has been around ten years and nobody knows his style, yet we’ve seen Farke 2-3 times and know what his philosophy is.

I think manquillo has been so bad for years that they just went and brought someone as back up to Yedlin so thought an international would improve overall squad depth. Issue is manquillo put in a tremendous pre season and now looks 10x the player Krafth is and possibly should be taking Yedlin position in current form. Hopefully Manquillo starts ahead of Krafth now or Yedlin comes back.

The danger this season is we have an incredibly difficult run in, so if we leave it late to replace Bruce then there is little chance of a great escape.

I’m negative because at the start of the season I said we were relying on miraculous transformations of almiron and joelintons scoring records as well as longstaff turning into a 8 goal a season player. None of these miracles look likely to happen now. How are we going to score consistently?

Joelinton might get 8, almiron 5 being kind, longstaff is capable of 5. Unless we can get 20 clean sheets that’s not going to add up to a successful season.

So now benitez is being hung out to dry based on he instant wonder of Norwich (who have a season ahead of them like everyone else btw)? How long have they bounced up and down from the champo before getting to their current wonder-status? There’s no comparison with what benitez was swimming against the tide with. All these specious arguments with tenuous comparisons no wonder people get fed up and tetchy with this tosh.

and my main problem i just don’t see were the goals are going to come from, nothing i’ve seen so far points to a 20 goal a season being on our books,
