The injury list at Newcastle keeps growing by the week. After this weekend’s loss at Liverpool, Fabian Schar faces an uncertain period as the club determine the extent of his calf injury. He is added to the seven players that were ruled out for the Liverpool trip.
When probed about the condition of his star defender, Steve Bruce couldn’t say if the injury was the result of a cramp or a tear. If it is the latter, the length of time that Schar could miss would be anywhere from a couple of weeks to a couple of months.
Though, the Chronicle reported yesterday that Schar was walking freely as he left Anfield. If his calf muscle is injured, then we would suspect it to be a minor strain rather than a grade 2 or 3 tear.
That could me mean that he would miss out on this week’s match against Brighton which is one where three points are expected.
Jonjo Shelvey– second straight start for midfielder?
Another player who Steve Bruce is uncertain on is Sean Longstaff. Sean overturned his ankle during training last week and was forced to miss the match at Liverpool. We are still waiting to hear if he will be available for Brighton. If not, we would expect Jonjo Shelvey to keep his place.
The other player who is a doubt for this Saturday’s game is Andy Carroll who will increase his level of training this week. If he comes through it unscathed, he could be available to make his return to St James Park. Andy has not played in a match since February, so even if he is cleared, we would expect him to start on the bench.
All other players dealing with injuries are most likely out for Brighton. They include DeAndre Yedlin, Florian Lejeune, Allan Saint-Maximin, Matt Ritchie, and Dwight Gayle who are all struggling with longer-term injuries.
If none of the players who are injured are available for this weekend’s match, then we could see the following team picked for the game. While there is only one change from Liverpool, we could also see Javier Manquillo in for Emil Krafth.
The substitutes bench would most likely contain the following players. We had to struggle to find a seventh and settled on Kyle Scott from the reserves:
Karl Darlow, Javier Manquillo, Ciaran Clark, Ki Sung-yueng, Matty Longstaff, Kyle Scott, Yoshinori Muto.

Comment #1Watford were a great watch second half. Would have quite liked their manager here. Sarr, perryra and delafeo are a joy. Wonder if we could go 433 and have St Max + Almiron flanking Joelinton.
Just wish we had won the ashes. great to win this last game but wonder if the aussies were already on the plane home with job done at OT.

Comment #4Don’t normally bother about ‘stats” but
7th up to top 1st have goal differences between 0 and +11
8th down to bottom 20th have goal difference between -1 to -6
*8th to 17th there’s a three point difference
Table has a familiar look to it alraedy – we need to change that on Saturday – when our season really starts !

I’m not to sure mind, they’ve not won it here since 2001 so it would have been massive for them to take the win, what a shame we drew at Lords, saying that they were the better team overall, take Smith out of the equation and it’s a different series, it also might have been different if Anderson had of played as well.

Think it may have been different had Anderson been rested for the first test to recover better and archer had been put in .
Still think it was where we lost the series the first game at a ground where the Aussies never win .
5 day test and missing your main bowler is tough going

Comment #24Jib………. I think you should re evaluate your comment about 99 per cent of footy songs coming from an actual song. That figure is way too high and you only quoted it to try and prove a point. Blatant inaccuracies don’t do you any favours on here Jib.
