These Five Players Are In Final Year Of Their Deals – Which One Would You Prefer To Get An Extension?

The following five Newcastle United first-team players will see their contract expire this summer. There has been no reported negotiations for new deals for any of the five.

  • Karl Darlow – Goalkeeper
    • Karl joined Newcastle in a double deal with Jamaal Lascelles from Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2014.  He initially went back on loan to Forest. The 28-year-old has made just 60 appearances for the club but has proven to be a dependable back-up.
  • Rob Elliot – Goalkeeper
    • Thirty-three-year-old Rob Elliot joined Newcastle from Charlton in the summer of 2011.  He was Newcastle United’s player of the year in 2015-16 when he came in for an injured Tim Krul.  Rob has made 68 appearances for Newcastle.
  • Federico Fernandez – Central Defender
    • Federico joined last summer from Swansea for around £6m.  He has become a very reliable back-up.  The 30-year-old has played 26 times for Newcastle.
  • Javier Manquillo – Right-back
    • At just 25-years-old, Javier is the youngest player on this list.  He joined from Atletico Madrid in 2017 for around £4m.  Javier has made 48 appearances for Newcastle and can provide cover at left-back.
  • Ki Sung-Yueng –  Midfielder
    • Ki joined last summer as a free-agent when his contract expired with Swansea.  The 30-year-old has made just one appearance this season and only 20 overall for Newcastle.

Of Five First-Team Players In Final Year - Which One Should Newcastle Give Extension Too?

  • Federico Fernandez (55%, 360 )
  • Javier Manquillo (28%, 185 )
  • Ki Sung-yueng (9%, 58 )
  • Karl Darlow (6%, 42 )
  • Rob Elliot (2%, 10 )

I remember Frank Clarke’s first goal and after that, whenever he got the ball, the crowd would shout for him to have a shot, no matter where he was on the field.

He was a greatly underestimated right-footed left back who used to get some stick at SJP, but Cloughie saw his qualities and got a few more years out of him.

Wasn’t borrowing against projected income something Freddy Shepherd did to fund the stadium upgrade?

As far as I’m aware, we account for all of a player’s wages at the point that we sign him. Therefore, surely the player wages are already covered from the transfer budget, which is one reason which has been given as to why we often seem to spend less than we think we have available for transfers.

If that’s true, then we’re not borrowing this money for flexibility on wages, it would need to be for something else.

The question is what? It’s an odd move from Ashley, particularly this far in advance of the next transfer window.

I went for Manquillo, as he has improved and is a useful squad player. Fernandez would also be worth keeping, when he’s played he’s rarely let us down.

The other 3 can def go.

    Robleenio,
Your disrespeck to the Harrisons aside I think those murals are way too little too late, things like that should have been done when 52K were turning up for Championship matches not when 10K are going unsold, it’s going to take a bit more than that. Also they’re going to require a lot of up keep, how shabby looking are they going to be if he let’s nature run it’s course on them.

This bit about wages and the transfer budget causes confusion. In a sensible world, wages would be taken into consideration when looking at transfers.

Wages’d ordinarily be considered in relation to costs going forward and giving a feel for the overall cost of a project/ purchase over x years. The overall cost wouldn’t or shouldn’t be taken as a number to hit one year’s accounts. Mind, in saying that, we’re talking Ashley who seems to make the rules up as he goes along.

    geordie157,
We need three keepers, Woodman should definitely stay out on loan so I’d give Elliott and Darlow a year and two respectively OR and that’s a big Or get shot of Elliott and actually buy a keeper.

Jail – Can you imagine the outrage, the steam coming out of his ears if Rafa had of had 61M pounds spent on him and failed to better last years finish, give Steve Bruce the same and he’d be delighted if he finished mid table.

Rafa would still have lost Perez due to the release clause and it’s doubtful he could have signed Rondon on the age issue.

Both Bruce and Rafa would therefore have been in the same position and if that dutch league CF Rafa wanted was anything to go by who knows who Rafa would have signed and how they would have performed.

If Bruce finishes mid table he’ll have done well imo and if he finishes 10th or above he’ll have done very well.

I’d still far rather have Rafa but let’s see how Bruce does over the season with arguably the best squad he’s ever managed before we make a hasty judgement.

There doesn’t seem to be two teams of the poor quality that Cardiff and Hudds were last season and it looks like there could be a real battle at the bottom this season.

We definitely need to keep Darlow. Woodman if he stays with us is probably going to be a fixture in the team once he breaks into it and we seem to produce good young GKs so Elliot should be giving the chance to move on if he wants to.

Ah yes Billson, the big soft Dutch donkey that Rafa wanted and we nearly signed. He;s clearly not up to much. Mind u, if we had signed him and he was poor, the no nowts on here wud have blamed Charnley ! you couldnt make it up. Not sure why Rafa left if the fans forgave him literally any error . Nice work if u can get it! He was also livid we didnt get Sturridge – another bullet avoided. Sorry, am I saying things that are not ceaslessly happy clappy. Forgot thats not allowed! LMAO
