Martin Dubravka is close to signing a new contract with Newcastle that will reportedly double his current wages. He has been a revelation since joining the club initially on loan in January of 2018. Since making his debut against Manchester United, in that fantastic 1-0 win at St James Park, Martin has played every minute in the Premier League.
He is certainly deserving of a new contract and, hopefully, one that will keep him at the club for years to come. While it was a summer of speculation for the Slovakian international, Martin has picked up where he left off last season despite the significant changes the club have faced recently.
Speaking to the Chronicle, Dubravka had this to say about the change at the top over the summer:
“It’s a new manager. It’s a new situation for everybody, every player.
“We need to adapt. He’s explaining what he wants from us, so it’s a new situation and what we can do is adapt.”
It has been a transition for both fans and players as Steve Bruce has tried to replace the looming presence of Rafa Benitez. One of our deepest fears this summer was with player unrest.
However, they have gotten on with their jobs despite difficult circumstances. Martin has been one of the most vocal of the players about moving forward under the new head coach.
In his interview, Dubravka also touched upon the positive atmosphere inside the club. He mentioned how the players can only concentrate on themselves and not let outside distractions affect them:
“It is positive. There were so many positives, as well, before (under Benitez), I think. The main thing was that people were focused on the negative things. As players, we can only do what we can do on the pitch. Put everything in.
“I can say that all of us are working to improve every day, every training. That’s all we can do. I have to say I’m still proud of my team-mates because they are trying to do their best.”
While there is a lot to be down about with the club in its current state. One of the positives is in the attitudes of this group of players. They continue to graft and work hard for each other. They will need to continue to do that on Saturday against Brighton in a match where three points are expected.
How Will Newcastle Do Against Brighton On Saturday?
- Win (73%, 1,126 )
- Draw (16%, 238 )
- Loss (11%, 168 )

It could be a masterstroke, imagine how excited Almiron would be, it would make him feel 10ft tall, and maybe just maybe the two of them could rip the league asunder.
On the converse of that, he could be a massive fail. And drag Almiron even further down with him.
But something needs to be done with Almiron soon before it becomes too late, because he is slowly becoming more and more ineffective. For 25M or less he would be worth a chance imo

Comment #6The issue with signing Martinez would be we would have to play 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1 with Almiron playing on the wing. Where does that leave Max and Astu?

Giving Jiblet’s the heads up about Jib sails is time that you could have put to better use. Admiral Jib is a master mariner but being a modest soul, he’s kept that to himself.
And continuing the nautical theme and just for you

Comment #11I’d say Martinez is a gamble too far.
We’re currently waiting for Almiron Joelinton Krafth Maximim Willems and Carrol to prove the can deliver in the prem on a consistent basis.
Proven EPL players is what we need, not that we’ll get them

Comment #12BBC referred to Beardo being subject to a 14 month club investigation?
Investigation my Harris. Beardo was one of Ashley’s cheer leaders and they avoided the inevitable for as long as they could get away with it, hoping it would just go away.

Comment #18Would Martinez be as big of a gamble for us though, because of his amazing partnership with Almiron and how he would almost certainly transform Almiron’s confidence. For sub 25M I think it would be far less of a gamble for us compared to any other club.

Comment #21A new political party definitely needs to be formed under the banner, “Lesh Knows Best ” party.
The new party will totally ignore democracy and the will of the British people and all decisions will be made by Lesh personally due to the fact that the electorate are too easily misled and naieve to be allowed to have an opinion.

If Almiron was doing well in the Prem no I’d probably not think it was much of a gamble.
He must have played 20 games now, no goal no assist.
Not convinced by Almiron, maybe he’s trying too hard.
Atleast theres a good few games between now and Jan to judge Almiron.
I wouldn’t pay much more than was paid for Almiron.

Comment #23More “bargain basement” players! We need a proven PL striker. Almiron was a star in the MLS but he’s a Championship player here! Trouble is we haven’t got Rafa to tell Charnley the truth!

Comment #36I don’t care what player comes to the premiership, it takes time to adjust to the pace and physicality, hopefully Almiron comes good.
I think he has the game for the Prem, one goal for confidence and away he goes.

Comment #40I think the issue with Almiron is he’s trying to do too much atm. Not sure if thats on him or Bruce, but he’s never been a player that will take on 2-3 guys and have a shot. He uses his pace to push the ball past the first player and lay it off. He needs to make decisions faster though. Too early to say whether its still adjusting to the speed of the Prem or if he just took a step too far and isn’t suited to it. To get the most out of him, he should be picking the ball up from deeper and running into an open space on angles, then pass either out wide or to Joelinton up top and continue his run to either pull a defender or to get the ball back to him. Him trying to take on half the team 1v1 is never going to work.
