Atsu, Manquillo, And Shelvey Start Against Brighton – Carroll And Saint-Maximin On Bench

This is the side that Steve Bruce has just announced for the match today. It features just one change from Liverpool with Javier Manquillo coming in at right-back for Emil Krafth.

The bench is much stronger in attacking options as Andy Carroll and Allan Saint-Maximin make the match-day squad. It looks like the formation will be a 5-4-1 or 3-4-3. Jonjo Shelvey also gets a second straight start for the injured Sean Longstaff. This game should suit him much better than away to Liverpool.

Depending on how the game unfolds, we could see the return of Andy Carroll in the black and white stripes. What a moment that will be for the local lad. Also we could get to see new signing Allan Saint-Maximin who has only featured for 40 minutes this season due to his hamstring injury.

This is the team that Brighton will send out to face the lads.

This is massive for the lads. It has the potential to be a scriptwriters dream if Andy comes on and finds the back of the net.

Howay The Lads!

Brighton 80.5% possession. At St. James’?

We should be up attacking their makeshift left back instead of relying on almiron to counter attack by himself

We’re asleep. Shelvey typifies our performance so far. Such a lazy prick.

All Shelvey’s fault I presume. One individual player isn’t responsible for these possession stats. The coaching and tactics appear to be the biggest issue right now.

Switching formation could be an idea.

1 young coach getting his team to pass and move and dominate possession and play.

    1 not any of that.

Can’t watch as out on wife’s birthday bash but sounds like I’m the lucky one , 20% possession at home to Brighton is very poor

Sorry but Almiron does not look like a top tier player. His decision making is woeful.

We can’t put 2 passes together. A goal looks inevitable for them at the moment.

If we were playing against a half decent team today we’d be 2 or 3 down at this point. How Brighton missed that last chance is beyond me.

Given the opposition, this is the worst iv seen us play for a long time. they all look lazy, just chasing shadows but no-one is actually tight and putting tackles in. No movement in the odd moment we have the ball.

Rafa might have made the 532 work with his ability but it will be the end of us with Brucey unless he changes it and gets someone further forward and closer to joe.

Spurs was a perfect storm of a professional pride performance (after being slaughtered post Norwich and Warrm-upgate) + a v unsettled Spurs set up due to Levy wanting to peddle half a dozen of them. This is us. At home. V Brighton. We’re doomed. Getting exactly what I expected from a Steve Bruce led Newcastle United.
