While yesterday’s performance against Brighton was a giant step back for the lads, there were at least a couple of positives that emerged. The first was the return of Andy Carroll who came on for the last ten minutes to a rousing applause.
It was a special moment for Andy and, while the circumstances could have been better, we were thrilled to see him back in the black and white stripes.
The second positive was the return and performance of Allan Saint-Maximin in the second-half. The twenty-two-year-old injected life into a moribund team that was frustratingly flat for much of the game.
His impact was immediate. Allan’s direct runs and pace provided an instant threat for Newcastle. His introduction changed the last twenty minutes of the game as Newcastle were able to get on the front foot a bit more often.
After the match, there were murmurs that Saint-Maximin had re-injured his hamstring. Steve Bruce commented after the game that he hoped Saint-Maximin was just suffering from a knock:
“We hope it’s just impact. I haven’t asked the doctor just yet. We’re in tomorrow, and we’ll see. We’ve got one or two nursing knocks.”
Allan was taken down by a Brighton defender late in the game and struggled to get back up. The impact from that collision may have been what he was feeling after the game.
That seems to be the case from Allan’s comments to the official Newcastle website yesterday. This is what Allan said about his return from injury and the game next week:
“I’m very happy because it’s been a long time for me with an injury. Normally, I don’t get this injury, but this happened because the Premier League is very physical and I have to adapt myself quickly.
“It was hard because I trained hard to come back and everybody didn’t want this to happen again. I will work hard to be good for next week.
“But I’m really happy to be back – I would prefer to be back with a win, but we’ve drawn 0-0, and we have to keep going for the next game.”
We hope that Allan’s comments mean that he has not suffered a setback with his hamstring. He mentions working hard to be ready for the Leicester City game next weekend.
It’s become quite clear that Allan is going to be an important member of this team. Newcastle are a different side with him on the pitch. We hope we see just that next week at Leicester City.

I said I would support a one off boycott of Arsenal.
However, someone has to convince me it will be supported by all or nearly all.
That is setting the bar impossibly high and if everybody said “I will step forward if others do” then you end up with nobody stepping forward.
I think it’s happening organically anyway. I can see a game later in the season where a perfect storm of apathy and anger will see a near empty ground.

You see it bandied about on Twitter and FB that the protesters aren’t welcome in the ground because they create a bad atmosphere? So booing the team at half time and full time is classic support the team not the regime?

Comment #3Its funny how all the no marks and creeps like Keys and Jordan and you know who on here seem to be giving Bruce a free pass on his average 29% possession.

Is that why Ashley doesn’t turn up?
The bad atmosphere is all down to him, its poisonous at times.
I wish the crowd would atleast call Ashley a cnut.

I think our next home game that is chosen for a Monday night will see the lowest ever, so SKY probably won’t choose one.

Comment #9I still think many rate our players better than they are.
We play with 3 cbs because barring Lejuine none of the others could hold their own in a back 4.
We have Hayden Ki and Longstaff who can cut it in CM in the prem, not good enough for a season, asking too much of them.
Atsu is having his best season for us, other than that there’s not too much to say about our forwards.
I reckon Shearer and Owen up front now would offer the same cutting edge and goal return.
We have a miss matched hodge podge squad…
I was gutted when Rafa left, he may not have got the quality or player he wanted but always seemed to get one that would suit the side.
Rafa was a safe pair of hands, no way Bruce is, not in a million games.
Bruce has accepted the reigemes choice of player with no plan and no idea, just like the reigeme itself.

Comment #10People keep bringing up the bad atmosphere.
Well get yourself to SJP.
Take one of them empty seats , and make some positive noise if your so concerned.
Guess ashley couldnt afford to keep giving all them chinese students free tickets like he did for boycott arsenal (while your paying for your season ticket)
How does it feel to be sitting next to people who have paid a fraction of the price you pay to watch the lads?
Mugged off for your loyalty

Comment #11Monday 25th November away v Villa. A bottom of the league Newcastle United are dominated (again) and both sets of fans turn on Bruce. Then it gets messy.

Comment #13It’s great that everyone has become statisticians all of a sudden
in their rush to condemn Bruce
Here’s a couple of stats for you
The same fixture last October Brighton at home we had 32% possession (we lost 0 -1 btw)
Next weeks fixture last April Leicester away we had 28% possession (we lost that 1-0)

Comment #21You’re an absolute disgrace Jib. Who wakes up after THAT and starts seeking to justify it and say, with false stats, that it was just like last year. Save your predictable snide remark on it being a draw this year and loss last year. This was a much worse portent of what is to come. As bad as it’s been as anybody not being paid by Newcastle United would say.

It’s not setting the bar impossibly high.
Trouble is this. TMG and others. They adopt by choice or accident the methods of political activists/agitation.
That is all about maximum affect from minimum effort. That tends to mean twitter, blogs and social media. Great I understand that.
This is the problem. Tens of thousands of supporters don’t bother with twitter. Many where I sit are over 60 etc. It’s not their thing.
If you want to make the next step you have to go to the ground and deliver the message to supporters. It won’t lead to conflict. They are our supporters, many as I say, over 60. They are not the Taliban ready to explode into violence.
Pick a TV game and go for it. In the 2 or 3 games running up to it, those minded to need to be at the ground getting the message out. Leaflets, what you are trying to do, what will it achieve.

Comment #29Bring on Leicester, we’ll moider them!
First half yesterday was the worst I’ve seen from us for a long time, no fight no effort no clue. But we got a valuable point, it may prove a crucial one by May if we are struggling near the foot of the table(which i reckon we will be).
ASM and Schar were the stand outs imo, Carroll hopefully to be an impact sub, gave they’re defenders a few panics when he came on. As i say, bring on the foxes HWTL

2 platinum club tickets £6K for the two etc.
That was just for the club membership. Your ticket was extra.

Comment #33I’ve been around the bars and handed out thousands of flyers Posada. People need to choose to act based on the evidence of their own eyes. The result of my efforts was being booed in by your own fans. ‘Supporters’ who booed our own player Ayoze then sarcastically cheered his substitution. Some people need to take a long hard look at themselves.

Comment #40The least classy thing bruce has done is blaming Rafa for his own shortcomings. Says it wasn’t rafa’s tactics that won at spurs but every other game apparently it is. Says we’ve struggled for goals under rafa. Well if joelinton and co get half of perez and rondons total i will be amazed. Not really bruce’ s fault, like charnley and others promoted way beond their
