Who Did Our Readers Select As The Best Against Brighton?

While there were not many positives in the performance against Brighton, there were a couple of outstanding moments. One was the return of Andy Carroll, and the other was the goal-line clearance by Fabian Schar to rescue a point for Newcastle.

Due to his reliable performance on Saturday, the Swiss defender has won the poll as Newcastle’s best player against Brighton. Of the 1,126 total votes, Schar collected 415 of them for 37%.

It was actually a fairly close race as second-half substitute Allan Saint-Maximin had 350 votes for 31% of the total votes. Allan provided Newcastle with renewed life in the twenty minutes he was on the pitch.

These two players were the clear choices as no one else came even close. It was a dismal performance from the team, and hopefully, we will see a much better display at Leicester City.

Who Was Newcastle's Best Player In Disappointing Draw Against Brighton?

  • Fabian Schar (37%, 415 )
  • Allan Saint-Maximin (31%, 350 )
  • Christian Atsu (6%, 64 )

  • Jamaal Lascelles (4%, 44 )
  • Andy Carroll (4%, 42 )
  • Javier Manquillo (3%, 33 )

  • Isaac Hayden (2%, 20 )
  • Jonjo Shelvey (1%, 14 )

Repost as it took me ages to type it:

I don’t normally comment on games over the weekend because of all the hysteria you get on here.
Yes we were very poor in the first half and couldn’t get near their passing game but surprisingly when we did get the ball off them we created 2 very good chances that we should have converted. Although people saying Bruce was clueless he did actually switch it to 4 3 3 half way through the first half which did improve things slightly. In the second half we were a little bit better and closed them down quicker although they should have scored. The last 10 minutes was the most entertaining when Carroll came on although we didn’t really play to his strengths and get enough crosses in but he was causing mayhem in their box.

I have to say on this performance we look like relegation candidates BUT I remember thinking exactly the same last year after a couple of our first few home games where we were very poor. The difference is I always thought Rafa could turn it around and Rondon wasn’t fit yet however I’m not so confident that Bruce can do the same even if Carroll stays fit!

    Reilly,
You beat me to it, this is an extract from what must be the same interview in the Chronicle
“What I’ve learnt today is that we can’t leave ourselves open and try and get after teams because people will play through us,” he added.
So the playing on the front foot ploy that he dissed Rafa with is now out the window and he’s learned that we will have to play on the counter against everyone home and away, so we’re going to have to suffer watching the team get pummeled and riding their luck for 90 in the hope that one of them converts one of the two or three chances we’ll create. I can understand why, after that battering at Norwich that the team dug in against Spurs you try and get them to do that week in week out at teams like Villa and Sheff Utd.

The guy has been managing, albeit very poorly, switching formations on seeing your side get battered should be the most basic of skills.

Reilly you beat me to it!!

    Especially this bit:-

It was telling when Newcastle skipper Jamaal Lascelles said: ‘Brighton were a lot more direct last season but they have a new manager and probably work all week on passing the ball.’

What do Newcastle work on? They have made the fewest touches in the opposition box (76), fewest passes in the final third (419) and, at 33 per cent, have the lowest possession return in the division.

At one point in the first half, Brighton’s Dale Stephens had completed more passes than the entire Newcastle team, who were booed off at both the interval and full-time by the lowest home crowd in nine years.
    – – – – – – – –

What is the point of scouting talented youngsters with no one to develop them?

So according to Brucie we’re one point below par, so that’s his aim for the season then, to chalk up 38 points.

Jail @9 – that’s what I said – they dominated the first half but ironically we had the 2 best clear cut chances. In the 2nd half although we marginally improved they had the best chances and should have scored – we were lucky to get a draw.
My point about Bruce was people saying he has no tactics – I was just pointing out that he does – whether they’re any good or not is a matter of opinion.

I think we always knew that finishing anywhere from 14th to 17th was Bruce’s brief. Damn that Spanish chappy getting ideas above his station.

Maybe Bruce was scouting Jesmond dene with his dog for new places for the squad to run.

Maybe running round the pitch is uninspiring so he wants them to be at one with nature, bring out the inner honey badger.

Didn’t watch the game so can’t make a judgement on best player although it sounds as if everybody was terrible.
The inevitability of Steve Bruce being sacked is almost upon us. Players openly telling him his tactics aren’t working , not giving even 75% and general not giving a toss body language means we’re unlikely to get any wins in the next few games ( albeit we’ll probably beat Chelsea now I’ve said that 🙂
The only issue with sacking Bruce ( who I’m not actually blaming for taking the job ), is that it’s highly unlikely anyone with a decent reputation will go anywhere near the job.
It’s well documented that Bruce was well down the list ( possibly not even on the original list) but was offered the job after others had turned it down or made it clear they weren’t interested.
Hard to see where we go from here with Ashley at the helm, his strategy on transfers / manager / spending on infrastructure is a disaster and saying we are doing well financially whilst holding 140 million debt is clearly wife of the mark ( debt his strategy has created ).

hibbit @27 – To be honest I’m not sure what it was but I’d read before the game that Brighton had a new passing game style and we just seemed completely unprepared for it – we just couldn’t get near them. Whether that’s because the players weren’t trying of were not expecting their style I’m not sure but based on Bruce’s post match comments it would seem to be the second of those!

i honestly just dont get how we played it was so poor all over the park as if we really didnt know what to expect from them,

Re Andy Carroll still looks a handful if they can just keep him fit his sharpness will come ,he’s had such a very long layoff he’s going to need time to get back up to some kind of match fitness not just the physical kind big ask of the lad !!!
