Newcastle’s Scouting Of Serie A Defender Could Be A Cause For Concern

Inside Futbol have a report that Newcastle sent scouts to watch Hellas Verona defender Koray Gunter on Monday night. Verona drew 0-0 at home against Udinese in the game. The report cites Italian outlets and also states that a bid could be made in January.

Gunter is a 6’1″ center-back who can also play defensive midfield and right-back. He is on loan with an option to buy at Verona. Should Verona take up the option to purchase the 25-year-old, Genoa will have a buy-back clause activated for the player.

The former U20 German international came through the Dortmund Academy where he made only one appearance for the first-team. He joined Galatasaray in 2014 but struggled to get into the side. He missed the entire 2016-17 season with a cruciate ligament injury in his knee. The following season he played sparingly before joining Genoa on a free transfer in the summer of 2018.

Gunter also found it hard to break into the Genoa side despite them using a back three similar to Newcastle. He started only 8 games last season before joining the recently promoted Hellas Verona this summer. He has featured regularly for Verona thus far in Serie A.

We are not sold on Gunter being an improvement on Newcastle’s current crop of defenders. The big scare is that he is being scouted as a replacement for Fabian Schar this January.

Verona also line-up in a back three this season. Gunter is naturally right-footed, so we are concerned he is being scouted as cover should Schar be lured away. Fabian, whose contract is due to run out in two years, would likely fetch a very high fee if Newcastle decided to cash in on him this winter.

We hope it does not come to that and the club can get the 27-year-old to sign a new contract. He has been our best player this season and is fast becoming a Newcastle legend despite only being here for a little over a year.

As Schar is the only player who knows where the back of the net is located then it would be stupid to sell him.

At the moment i am not rating Willams and Kraft, they probably need more time to get up to speed. I would go with the following set up utilising the current starting 11.

    ————————–Joelinton
    Atsu————————————————–Almiron
    ————Shelvey——————–Hayden
    ——————————Schar
    Dummett—Fernandez–Lascelles–Manquillio
    —————————-Dubravka

Blaming the players gets your credibility rating down so don’t do it.

Same core team as last year. Plus two apparently stupendous purchases. Although I’m sure Rafa wouldn’t have bought those particular players, I’m pretty certain he would have got the team to grind out better performances and results. Players like shelvey, almiron and longstaff were getting praise last season for performances, so something’s happened to turn that over, hasn’t it?

simon376 @4 – Yeah I’d agree with your estimate. Also there seemed to be be a few more empty seats in the second half as if some people couldn’t face it after the first half showing?

What do you mean ashley can’t win? Rafa fell into his lap and he jettisoned a top top coach for a dire one.
Finally, after years and years of austerity and against better advice he paid an alleged 35M for Joelinton after getting back 30M for Perez. Rafa didn’t want him at that price and Bruce probably didn’t even know who Joelinton was and what his position is.

Ashley could win if he wasn’t so intent on pushing the self destruct button every time we look like finally being in a decent position to progress. Top 8 was looking good this season with Rondon, Perez and Almiron, but no, couldn’t let someone who actually knew what they were doing just get on with it.

Should we just blindly support a lame coach and an errant owner regardless? For me after 50 years it’s getting very hard to justify backing this aptly named ”zombie club”.

    Jiblets

I’m currently in the Mallorcan village where your paymaster has his villa and the staff at the restaurant Grand Sol, who normally hear of whatever’s going on or has gone on. There’s been no sign of Ashley for a while and more relevantly, no reports of any drunken, foul mouthed Brits for a long long time.

So, Jiblets, where were you really hiding during your ‘voluntary’ absence from The Blog?

That one report said the club knew that letting a world class a manger go would result in empty seats?

Give it a rest, you think this is about Rafa, this is about the owner being the most idiotic owner to ever own a team, people are not staying away due to Rafa leaving but due to the man bought in to replace him.

Plus, also about the fact he didn’t want to let Rafa be a manager, no money, no players, no improvements to training areas.
Not much to ask for is it MA.

Come of it NUFC, let’s be honest, the fans are sick to there stomach that the owner gave SB ( Sad Bitch) the monies needed but wouldn’t give Rafa any backing after promising it for years.

MA is an owner that would let Alan Shearer the striker leave in his prime and then purchase Horacio Eden Pullio as the new striker.
Some may ask who the fcuk is Horacio Eden Pullio, he doesn’t exist, made him up, like all the transfer rumors and selling of the club, all bullshit from a Market Trader.

Oh and NUFC, Rafa didn’t leave, your headline should read, Empty seats due to Rafa being fired.
Letting a world class managers contract run out and not renewing is a sacking, not a leaving.
