Steve Bruce Will Look At Change That’s Given Him Food For Thought

Last week against Brighton, Steve Bruce went to a back four by moving Jetro Willems into the midfield. Brighton had enjoyed far too much possession, and Newcastle just couldn’t get the ball off of them.

The plan to have the three forwards press did not quite work as they were bypassed far too easily, leaving the midfield exposed. Bruce belatedly tried to sort out the trouble, but the lads never could get it fully rectified.

In an interview yesterday with Sky Sports, Steve Bruce was asked if he would consider going to a back four at some point this season.

Steve Bruce– How many at the back, Steve?

Steve’s answer is based on two factors – familiarity and depth. This is his response to the question:

“Yes, 100 per cent. But if you look at what I’ve inherited we’ve got six centre-halves at the club and the club have played with three centre-backs. But it’s something we’ll look at, yes.

“In the Premier League now, I think you need the ability to change. The top clubs change. Spurs, in particular, have played a back three and very quickly change into a back four. So, it’s something you can have up your sleeve.

“We switched to a back four against Brighton and we were much, much better and it’s given me plenty of food for thought going forward.”

Newcastle’s strongest position is easily at center-back with five quality players already battling for just three places. That number will increase to six once Florian Lejeune returns from his knee injury.

Having Paul Dummett in the side makes a tactical switch to a back four more fluid. We saw this against Brighton. It is something that we hope Bruce will continue to work on during training.

With flexible players like Paul Dummett, Florian Lejeune, and Fabian Schar at the back, Bruce has a lot to work with. Lejeune and Schar can always push into a defensive midfield role during a game if a need arises.

We are glad that Bruce is considering all of the options he has available to him. He has some versatile players who can switch roles when needed. Steve should look to take advantage of that this season.

I’ll just pick myself up from that bus knocking me over!

A draw would at least get us out of the bottom 3.

Isn’t it great having hopes like that. ?

And 4 Hours 2 Minutes to KO

You start the game with 1 point , normally managers try and increase that through tactics and players ability………..unfortunately, we have a manager who think tactics are little white mints in a clear plastic box, the ability of some of the players could get us more points it it weren’t for the managers tictacs

Wonder if Shelvey will be fit enough to come on for the last 20 minutes with AC to deliver his precision passing onto the big lads head.

Hopefully not Essex as that would mean we are losing the match and trying to chase a equaliser or winner.

So you need the ability to change in the PL now, like in the six years since he last managed there you didn’t need to change. Both managers set out their stall and stuck to it even if it wasn’t working out. No wonder he’s got the second worst win %.
    Dear gawd help us.

Playing three at the back with two wing backs makes the most sense to me considering our abundance of CB’s. Schar is more than capable of moving forward with the ball and finding an attack minded pass ala Shelvey. This gives the side more fluidity and attacking options rather than relying on Shelvey dropping back to pick the ball up from defense and then being isolated once he has played the ball forward.

There’s no legs in this Kenyon takeover nonsense, it’s just more rubbish PR.

Sadly I think we’re going to be completely rolled over today by a Leicester side that has been very impressive this season. They’ve a good manager, made some shrewd signings, constantly are bleeding youngsters and play a quick pacy possession based football that will steamroll our very ineffective midfield. They should run out comfortable winners 2-0 or 3-0

With all the talk of formations and options thereof it’s a shame that Jesper is still on the missing list. His contributions on this subject were always interesting and insightful as were his post match analysis and breakdown of stats despite him not always being able to actually watch the game.

How our full backs and CM’s haven’t moved on from the championship 3 seasons ago I don’t know. Dummet is a reasonable defender but can’t attack so we can never sustain pressure down the left. On the other side the opposite is true, Yedlin, strong on the overlap but positionally inept at defending the back post… CM’s are just full of energy (occasionally become headless chickens) but have no guile or ability to play through an opposition press. Makes it impossible to play a 4-2-3-1 consistently

Unfortunately, these takeovers often end up with more asset strippers until there is nothing left. The football authorities need to get a grip on club ownership to ensure that any new owner has a history of investment and making businesses thrive, not owners who are often bankrupts or already have a history of asset stripping. Those of you out there with any business acumen will know how these scams work.

Utterly disrespectful of Neil to advocate that Atsu be dropped as opposed to almiron

Had Ritchie done half of what Atsu has done this season – you’d be calling for him to be knighted

For some odd, strange, mysterious and peculiar reason the bar is set so much higher for Atsu than it is for certain other players
    Very strange
    Very strange indeed

Bruce is basically a mclaren re run with a point a game mentality. Ash + charnley’s lack of football knowledge = so many wrong choices and missed opportunities. Its funny now we are the bottom how creeps like keys and nut jobs like catchy have gone a bit quiet, despite bruce having the kind of spending rafa was so starved of.
