Manager Linked To Newcastle In Early July Claims He “Was Meant To Sign For Newcastle”

The day before Steve Bruce was officially appointed as Newcastle manager there was a surprise report from France that Bruno Genesio was going to be appointed Newcastle manager once the BZG takeover was completed. The report came from Le Progres who made the following claim on July 16th:

Bruno Genesio, who coached Olympique Lyonnais from January 2016 to May 2019, could sign up with Newcastle on a four-year contract. This club in the North of England is about to be sold to a billionaire (who comes from Dubai) having close relations with the owner of Manchester City.

The BZG claims had diminished by the time of this report as Mike Ashley had given his interview to Martin Samuel a few weeks earlier. During that interview, Ashley claimed that no takeovers were close to happening.

Steve Bruce was confirmed as Rafa Benitez’s successor the day after Le Progres made their claim. We have heard nothing about these claims until today.

Bruno Genesio– ex-Lyon manager twice linked to Newcastle this year

Sport Witness have published recent comments by Genesio that appear to confirm that he was in line to sign for Newcastle if the BZG takeover happened. Genesio was a free agent at the time of the report but has since replaced Roger Schmidt at Chinese club Beijing Guoan. These are the comments as translated in the Sport Witness report:

“Everything went really quickly, because I was meant to sign with Newcastle, but the sale then fell through. I then decided to take some time off for myself, but towards the end of July, I received a phone call from my agents with an opportunity to go manage in China at Beijing Guoan.

“It just all went quickly. Forty-eight hours later I was on a plane, and four days later I was on the touchline for my first game”.

It is surprising to hear these comments. It looks like the Bin Zayed Group had contacted the former Lyon manager about being their choice if they could finalize a takeover of Newcastle.

While Genesio doesn’t give any specific details on if the takeover was close or not. It does raise more questions about what exactly happened with the BZG takeover. We may never know as we have heard so many conflicting reports.

Genesio was also linked to Newcastle in April when the Rafa Benitez contract situation was still unsettled.

Its obvious Jabba and his goons just dont get it
We are sick of the rubbish the club has to offer, changing the manager wont change a thing
Whoever they drag in they will be facing the same rubbish every other manager Jabba has mugged off

Jabbas definition of success is scraping staying in the league with the absolute minimum spend possible, while making mega profits from players

While all the money we make magically vanishes as per usual

The days of the PR helping him mug off the fans is over
    People have had enough
The players are sick of it

Eventually he will have chased away the entire crowd, lets see them lie there way out of that

Email your local MP and ask them to help you
Ask them to represent you in parliament

They are in the process of dealing with parasites like Jabba

Heard the phrase a,couple of times on radio 2 during the week also, he probably picked it up there.

It’s a good phrase and it works well in the current situation, he may aswell use it before someone beats him to the punch.

So BSG, or whoever they are, had already lined up a coach. Meticulous.

Shame they forgot a small detail: 300 million.

And to produce a brochure 🙂

We can only hope that reality is now in full swing and Ashley realises the writing is on the wall, imo things will not end well if he can’t see that cut and run is his only option. If things continue as they are, more and more fans will stay away, if we are relegated, I can’t see the fans coming back until Ashley is gone. It’s unlikely we will see a swift return to the Prem this time.
Ashley will take a massive haircut, the parachute payments will be of little comfort to Ashley when he see’s the value of his empire crumble to below a £100 Mill after a season or two in the Champo .

A new manager is irrelevant. Even if we are fortunate enough to obtain one as good as Raffa (or to a bizarre minority, better), we will just delay the inevitable. This new mythical manager will just leave, after saving us for a year or two, because he would want more control and some money to improve, which he won’t get, and will walk to greener pastors.

Ashley must go, there is no future above the bottom half (at best) with him. The pattern is so clear, so obvious, there is no room for honest debate. Hope in him is foolish. I am an optimist, so I had thought we had finally turned a corner, that Raffa had made him see possibilities, but I, we, were slapped hard in the face, knocked down, kicked and pickpocketed.

One of my great joys – Saturday Morning, reading the blog and watching the game was ripped from me. And, I did not want too much. Never asked to be a top six team with any consistency. Just wanted a team that strived to be better each year, and if we made a bad buy and couldn’t recover because we were not rich enough, so be it. But this ceiling on ambition is crushing us. Reach a point were only reasonable investment could make us reasonably fight for Europe, and instead choose to sell and let walk what got us there. We are in this loop; we return to the Championship, are teased with a modicum of hope and repeat.

Forget Bruce, and unfortunately, forget Raffa, but we must not forget that it is Ashley that has caused the crushing repetitive nausea.

Man U haven’t won away since they beat PSG in March, was it? They are woeful under Solksjaer as many on here predicted they would be, his new manager bounce was created only by a group of selfish young men who bust a gut to get back at Mourinho, now the effect of the hapless coach who failed so badly at Cardiff is now coming home to roost, so there is not a better time to play them. The Man U fans always make a lot of noise so that should prompt our lot to give a bit back as well, so the atmosphere should be a bit better, if we win it buys Bruce a bit more time and will show he can possibly turn it around, if we lose then he’s running out of games that people can point to and say he’s doing better than Rafa,

Unfortunately Bruce being the bumbling oaf he is has somewhat taken the heat off Churnley and Ashley, please don’t tell me they hired this man to take us down just so that we wouldn’t sing songs about Mikey. Nope, they badly messed up again and proves just how unfit the man is to run a football club.

    Thanks for the U23 update.
I thought as much but good to have confirmation.
Whilst it is sad that they are not doing as well, I am glad a lot of last seasons players are hopefully progressing on loan.
Despite not playing yet, even S-O-R-E-N-S-E-N will be improving through training alongside more senior players.
