Manager Linked To Newcastle In Early July Claims He “Was Meant To Sign For Newcastle”

The day before Steve Bruce was officially appointed as Newcastle manager there was a surprise report from France that Bruno Genesio was going to be appointed Newcastle manager once the BZG takeover was completed. The report came from Le Progres who made the following claim on July 16th:

Bruno Genesio, who coached Olympique Lyonnais from January 2016 to May 2019, could sign up with Newcastle on a four-year contract. This club in the North of England is about to be sold to a billionaire (who comes from Dubai) having close relations with the owner of Manchester City.

The BZG claims had diminished by the time of this report as Mike Ashley had given his interview to Martin Samuel a few weeks earlier. During that interview, Ashley claimed that no takeovers were close to happening.

Steve Bruce was confirmed as Rafa Benitez’s successor the day after Le Progres made their claim. We have heard nothing about these claims until today.

Bruno Genesio– ex-Lyon manager twice linked to Newcastle this year

Sport Witness have published recent comments by Genesio that appear to confirm that he was in line to sign for Newcastle if the BZG takeover happened. Genesio was a free agent at the time of the report but has since replaced Roger Schmidt at Chinese club Beijing Guoan. These are the comments as translated in the Sport Witness report:

“Everything went really quickly, because I was meant to sign with Newcastle, but the sale then fell through. I then decided to take some time off for myself, but towards the end of July, I received a phone call from my agents with an opportunity to go manage in China at Beijing Guoan.

“It just all went quickly. Forty-eight hours later I was on a plane, and four days later I was on the touchline for my first game”.

It is surprising to hear these comments. It looks like the Bin Zayed Group had contacted the former Lyon manager about being their choice if they could finalize a takeover of Newcastle.

While Genesio doesn’t give any specific details on if the takeover was close or not. It does raise more questions about what exactly happened with the BZG takeover. We may never know as we have heard so many conflicting reports.

Genesio was also linked to Newcastle in April when the Rafa Benitez contract situation was still unsettled.

This may sound a little crazy but I’ve wondered a couple of times if phatt boy is racist?
He tried to embarrass the Mansoor family a few years ago and it sounds as if he was continously shifting the goalposts with his cousin in the summer?

more like reverse snobbery, he doesn’t like people richer than himself and probably feels inferior.

Not only are real down 2 nil but in other live game, Duvan Zapata scored for Atalanta again. Heavily linked to us past year or so and widely reported to be someone that Benitez wanted. He’s been on fire this season.

The issue is Joellinton has never really been a goal scorer even when he played in the lower leagues! If anything he seems like he is more of a Perez replacement rather than a Rondon replacement….

Not here but I saw a fair bit of him at Hoffenheim, he definitely has potential.

Don’t judge him based on these games under Bruce with little to no service or support.

Just gonna make this point re Bruce.
He’s lived his life in football for 45 years. He should and I’m sure is able to manage a football team.
To what level ? In line with his CV which does not lie.
Thing is this. You give Rafa a contract on 6M a year for three years. Everyone knows he is the man. Has stature in the game yes but his contract says he is the man. Fall out with him and you are done.
    Like Colback.
Bruce. What is it 1M a year. Less than most of the players. They all know he is a bit of a stooge appointment. Could be here today gone tomorrow.

Will the players as a result take the pith. Yes, they will. How many managers have we seen where the players essentially down tools knowing the owner will bin the manager as they can’t bin the playing squad.

Football is driven by money from Bishop Auckland to Barcelona. Pay them X and they want that just for turning up. They will only graft if there is a prospect of Y an improved deal and more money.

Bruce could be essentially the fall guy for the regime. However he was told this.
By his mate Shearer and probably a few more.

    @Posada

Bruce is maybe the ultimate super fan? Hes bringing Ashley down from the inside?! I WISH!!

You would think after the abuse he got from Villa fans with the whole cabbage gate etc he would have thought sod this or maybe he thought the fans would go easy because hes a “Geordie” !?

He probably saw the eye watering sums of money that we were paying for players this summer and thought here we go they must be good totally forgetting that when Newcastle seem to spend big money on players from abroad they don’t do that great……

Support the team, not the regime. Look what’s happened because of that.

It’s absolutely now or never lads. Standing in streets, shouting at shops, token gestures are nothing. Everything we stand for is being sucked away because one person. Only his departure will get our club back.

In the mid 90s if someone said ‘In 20 odd years your players will leave for clubs like Leicester because they are more ambitious’ we’d have said they were certifiable. That’s where we are, and it has to end.

In snooker they use the term a shot to nothing.

If not, pay up my contract and thanks very much.

Lindisfarne, nee bosh marra. Apparently they actually played two sixteen year olds in the Sheffield United match. The way I see it, the reserves is a bit of a proving ground. Do well there and you might make it as a senior Pro and part of that is being in a successful team. In the long run, though, it’s less about that team and more about how you do individually.

The only reason any of them were given a chance was due to them playing for Manu under Fergie

The traitor has zero chance of turning it around at our club, hes clueless and has been handed players by Jabba he thinks he can make a big profit on

It didnt work last time with a better manager, something i though i would never think
That we would end up with a worse manager than P45due

It looks like Ashley’s gonna make a huge loss on these goons he’s bought trying to be clever. Joelinton’s worth about £10m and Miggy about £5m.
