Ciaran Clark, Matty Longstaff, And Allan Saint-Maximin All Start Against Manchester United

Here is the side that Steve Bruce has selected to redeem themselves this afternoon.

As reported by Craig Hope, both Ciaran Clark and Matty Longstaff get their first league starts of the year. We had expected Allan Saint-Maximin to come into the side, and he does but it’s in place of Christian Atsu. Miguel Almiron retains his place presumably on the right-wing.

Jetro Willems comes back to the team after missing out last week with a knee problem. We also see DeAndre Yedlin make his first start since April after his sports hernia surgery. This will give the team a lot of pace on the flanks.

Dwight Gayle has made the bench today in place of Yoshinori Muto. Jonjo Shelvey also gets into the match-day squad having recovered from his hamstring injury.

Here is who Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has chosen from his limited options for the Red Devils.

It’s a weakened side for Manchester United though the players coming in will be hungry to impress. Newcastle must come out and start well against this side. We need to see the lads getting the first goal. However, if they go down, we better not see any heads drop.

A win sees us out of the relegation zone for the coming international break. We usually say we just want to see an improved performance from the lads. But we are sick to death of that. We want all three points today!

Perhaps the first 3 points of this season at St Jame’s Park but we never know under this inept manager.

    Team

Newcastle United: Martin Dúbravka, DeAndre Yedlin, Fabian Schär, Jamaal Lascelles, Ciaran Clark, Jetro Willems, Matty Longstaff, Sean Longstaff, Miguel Almirón, Allan Saint-Maximin, Joelinton.

Substitutes: Karl Darlow, Emil Krafth, Paul Dummett, Jonjo Shelvey, Christian Atsu, Andy Carroll, Dwight Gayle.

I know someone put it up already but it needs to be on the game thread.

Strong lineup. Really excited to see what Saint-Maximin can do, I’ve been anticipating when I would see him play so glad he’s starting today. We have a lot of pace and hopefully we have the will and fight for every ball. Last weeks performance was atrocious. One of the worse games I’ve seen from us. Man Ure are here for the taking and we should be able to win this weakened side. We cannot give them too much respect, let’s get at their faces and boss them around!

Well let’s hope joelinton can play with more “energy”.

Kind of the least I’d expect for a £40mill player with 7 goals last season. Ashley’s scouting network must of seen something!

Good luck to Matty longstaff today. Baptism of fire.

Happy with that aside from wanting Carroll to start and be given an hour.

Always felt Clark has got fairly hard done by since he has been here. Always reliable, sniffs out danger well in the box and provides more of a threat at set-pieces than any other of our CBs at the other end. Hi =s weakness like Lejeune is probably runners in behind.

    Delighted to see Yedlin back.

We will see a proper RWB for the first time in a while today and hopefully ASM is playing on the same side – dizzying speed and direct running, should get at the ageing Young every opportunity. Yedlin can stay with James too, Kratfh or Manquillo would get slaughtered.

Big day for the Longstaff’s, hope they do us, themselves and their family proud.

Glad to see three at the back again, with the wingbacks pushing forward. Also excited to see the Longstaff brothers in the middle of the park. Very proud day for their family. Can feel it in me jellies that we may come away with three points today, although I’d take a draw right now 😀

A lot hinges on Joelinton today. Needs to give us much more. His only real quality moment was the goal against Spurs, aside from that he’s done a target man impression with varying success. Need much more vigour and desire to score from him.

Manquillo not even on bench, what’s he done to upset Mr Bruce.

9/11 for my team selection with Fernandez not on bench either.

Bold selection be good if it comes off, more trepidation than anticipation though.

Was there any reason given for dropping Dummett for this game? Is he carrying an injury or is it just a case of shuffling the pack at the back?

Hope we can defend as well as Wolves are today. The Scousers will be enjoying this one!

im guessing that Bruce decided Dummett is too much of a liability on the ball.. fernandez can pick a pass. i like dummett, he’s a liability going forward though

This season is throwing up lots of surprises outside of Liverpool who also seem to be getting the rub. Looks like theirs to lose.

    Top 6 is wide open.

Adama Traore has frightening pace. Quickest player I’ve ever seen I think and when he gets it right unplayable. Stocky build, can stand his ground and brush off the buffeting most dribblers are subjected to by larger players.

Nah, ASM is quick but a touch slower than Traore, like Yedlin. Not quite as strong either, but stronger than average. ASM has more tricks and a better football brain though.

Seriously worried about the midfield. One debut and the other struggling to return from injury. This side looks like a Hail Mary.

This is it Brucie lad if it doesn’t come off then hard as a decision is you have to go. But if it does you’ve got some breathing space and a couple of weeks to work with the squad. We all bleed Black and White and hate Man U so I’m hoping by tonight you don’t have a decision to make. Your career or the Toon?

Looking at the positives, i would like to see Joelinton drop deep almost into a 5 man midfield, with Maximin and Almiron exploiting the space beyond.
