Newcastle Improved But Lack Cutting Edge In Scoreless First Half

Some much needed improvement as Newcastle looked a lot better than the past two weeks. However, they still are have having trouble in front of goal as they could not get any of their 8 shots on target.

The lads came out as determined as ever and got an early chance fashioned from an Allan Saint-Maximin run. His pass to Miguel Almiron led to a heavy touch and his shot was blocked for an early corner.

The Longstaff brothers were lively in midfield. Young Matty looked very steady with some tidy passing and hard-nosed tackles. He almost wrote his name into Geordie lore with long-ranged effort in the 27th minute. He collected a Saint-Maximin pass and the ball bounced nicely for him as he blasted the shot against the cross bar. It would have sent the crowd mad had it gone in.

A couple of minutes later, Fabian Schar had a glancing header fly over the bar from a Sean Longstaff corner.

In the 38th minute, Allan Saint-Maximin’s footwork would get the ball to Sean Longstaff who fired a beautiful downfield pass to a breaking Almiron. Miguel just panicked again in front of goal. He took an extra touch and his shot was easily blocked by a trailing Harry Maguire.

Manchester United would get a few chances to close the game. The lads fell asleep on a late corner and were almost punished. Harry Maguire had a free header in the box but put it wide of goal.

Newcastle still have little possession but look very threatening on the break. Allan Saint-Maximin has provided a massive spark but has been a little sloppy in possession. He also has been wayward in some of his deliveries. However, he is creating opportunities.

Manchester United have been very poor to be honest. Even though they have close to 70% possession they haven’t created too many chances. This is a very winnable game. The lads need to continue to work hard and hopefully one of these chances can find the back of the net.

It was a concern seeing Allan Saint-Maximin on the sideline in some discomfort as the game ended. We hope he is able to continue for the second half. He was able to walk back to the dressing room unassisted so hopefully he is fine.

A nil all draw is gonna help no one here, whatever happens I hope it’s not a 0-0 draw.

Luckily for us ManU don’t really have any game changers on the bench to give them something different in the second half. Young Greenwood might get a chance near the end, and he’s a bright young player who could give our defence something to think about, but who else do they have? Matic?

Almiron and joelinton just so poor. Carroll and Atsu should replace them.

Almiron wide again… Bruce needs to get him working straight at beating one man then shooting over and over again until he finds the back of the net 9 out of 10 times.

Joelinton doesn’t put nowhere near enough energy into closing down from the front and it means a midfielder of ours is drawn out of the shape.

    Get Carroll on.

Also not the most mobile but brings a lot more as focal point and will fight for everything.

If we keep getting those crosses in then Andy will put at least one away. Naughty from Almiron. He needs to learn you can’t do that in this league.

    Almiron does my head in.

Can’t take a player on so dives.

Difference between having speed and being able to beat a man and he never does the latter even 1 vs 1 against slow CBs.
