Sean Longstaff has been underwhelming since his return from the knee injury he suffered in March. While he has been putting in the effort, he seems to be a bit off the pace at times and somewhat tentative.
While that is to be expected when recovering from a severe injury, Longstaff has yet to show the form that brought him to the attention of Manchester United this summer.
Sean recently mentioned that he was flattered with the interest of the Red Devils but always follows those revelations with his desire to play for Newcastle United.
The Daily Mail are reporting that Steve Bruce has spoken to Sean to tell him to forget about outside distractions and just concentrate on his performances for his hometown club.
Sean Longstaff– needs to get back to the form he showed last year
This is what Bruce has said about the 21-year-old:
“I think Sean Longstaff now needs to concentrate on his own performances, rather than worrying about speculation and tittle-tattle. I don’t think there was any real legs in the Man United story, it all happened before I arrived here.
“All Sean can do now is recover from his bad knee and start putting in the performances that would ultimately get you linked – and start playing well again.”
There were reports last week that Manchester United were plotting a £40m swoop for Sean to help bolster their midfield. With Sean’s performances being a little off so far, we find those reports to be somewhat dubious.
However if Sean is reading about them, then Bruce does need to have a talk with him to make sure he does not get unsettled.
Bruce also talked about the midfielder’s contract situation. It was reported earlier in the year that the club were going to make Sean one of the highest paid players at the club. In one report, the amount of £80k/week was mentioned.
Those reports appear to be wide of the mark based on the following comments by Bruce:
“I do believe he signed a new contract last Christmas. There is no problem there contract wise.
“The thing for him now is to forget contracts, forget his knee injury, forget Man Utd, it’s all about playing well for us now and getting back to playing like we know he is capable.”
We’re not sure how we feel about Bruce making all of this public. Bruce has a bad habit of revealing too much in his interviews. While we appreciate Bruce talking to the young Geordie, what he says should be left between them. There’s no reason to make this public.
It comes across as though Sean is pushing for a move or a new deal. We just hope that wouldn’t be the case. Everything we’ve heard from Sean points to him wanting to continue to play for Newcastle United.

A lot of people probably had the same reservations about Sean but he became the hero of the hour on his unexpected debut.

Can’t help thinking that the 9/11 memorial has to have some bad vibes around it. I think i’d find it a sad place to visit, still see the image of the falling man in my mind when I think about it.

Comment #5Yes Bill I hope so. I just wish we were playing better. It’s been shocking lately, we can’t pass or keep the ball, and do low on confidence. Mind Man U aren’t in great shape either.

Comment #7Bill the games this season that Sean’s played in, he’s been very poor. All the hype had effected him, I think anyway. As much as I would love them to play together in the team I can’t see it working. I truly hope I’m wrong .

How on earth do you conclude that bracketing Jiblets with three other proven liars in Trump, Johnson and Ashley is ‘left wing politics’?

Comment #11I think it’s probably the best chance we’ll have of getting a result against Man United tomorrow. OGS is having as bad a time as Bruce. Never thought he would do well there. The players seem a nightmare to work with.

Right or left wing politics, it’s irrelevant, the clue is in the politics connections they are all liars, or at least very clever twisters of the truth.
How often does one of them give a real answer to any question.

I was under the impression that Brucie had said they were fit enough to play, even Gayle might come into the equation.

Comment #30Shelvey has always needed a tea built around him. He needs others to do the running and challenging while he sprays the ball, like a QB.
If that can’t be provided, he becomes a liability. Slows down the game, dangerous challenges, becomes a frustrated observer.
Conclusion: we’ve all missed the elephant in the room. We need an entire new MF, not just one creative midfielder. How many of our midfielders would get in other teams?
We’re about to give two kid brothers with barely any PL experience a baptism of fire versus Man U!

Comment #32Cyprus the daftest decision close season was not to give Mo Diame a contract extension
He said in an interview on beIN tv (he’s now playing in the gulf) that he would have relished
playing for Bruce who he felt always got the best from him.
He didn’t play the requisite number of games to trigger an extension clause last season which
would have been Benitez’ decision I guess

Comment #38Lesh Essex has hit the nail on the head with the links and the fact that all politicians are liars why not use Corbyn in a derogatory term once in a while? I see you use trump,Johnson etc many times in multiple posts. We all have our own political views and the last thing we need is more divide in our club especially around issues that are not linked with the club so let’s leave it out eh.

Comment #39I don’t know why I still get excited every game day you would think that’s been knocked out of me by now but I can’t wait for the match. Hope we revert back to the 3421 formation but we get 5-10yds higher up the pitch and press them. He needs to get the two wide players which I hope will be Almiron and ASM up the pitch in support of Joel. Ultimately I think if we could play 4 at the back we should copy the Liverpool/Klopp 433 false 9 formation. We have the attacking players for that but it needs full backs who are great going forward as well as in defense while also needing 1 out and out cdm and two box to box players. I think Hayden and Longstaff could be the two box to box and we need to bring in a strong athletic CDM.
