One thing Newcastle fans have been starved of lately is a moment to cheer about. Well, we got that today as Matty Longstaff’s long-range goal helped give Newcastle their first victory at St James Park this season.
The victory sees the lads rise out of the relegation zone into 16th place. Just in time for the international break.
Allan Saint-Maximin made a difference today. He is all out attack and made some brilliant runs to set up chances. Putting him on from the start paid dividends today. The Longstaff brothers also played very well together.
However, we can’t let one magical moment paper over some of the obvious cracks. Newcastle are having a lot of trouble scoring goals. It was no different today. Miguel Almiron played very well but as soon as he gets a chance to score he just seems to freeze. He had three great chances this evening that he failed to put away.
We only managed to get 2 of our 12 efforts on target and had just 31% possession. However, we were much improved on the counter-attack.
Joelinton was also a little off the pace today. However, he suffered a back injury on Friday that may have limited his mobility.

But what matters is the three points and this is a big win for Steve Bruce and the players. Matty Longstaff, Allan Saint-Maximin, and Fabian Schar were outstanding today. DeAndre Yedlin also played very well in his return to the first-team.
