Former Striker Reminisces About Start To Newcastle Career

We were just checking to see how our former striker Papiss Cisse was doing the other day. The one thing that jumped out was his phenomenal goal scoring record since he left Newcastle.

Cisse was sold to SD Luneng for a little over £4m in the summer of 2016. He scored 18 goals in his 34 appearances for the Chinese Super League club.

In the summer of 2018, Papiss moved to Turkish club Alanyaspor and has scored an incredible 22 goals in just 34 appearances, including 6 goals in 7 games this term.

Cisse is now 34 years old, and time is winding down on his fantastic career. He still seems to be banging them in regularly.

Papiss Cisse– scored 44 goals for Newcastle

Papiss has done some reminiscing recently on his time at Newcastle. In an interview in the Athletic, he talks about his prolific first few months on Tyneside where the goals just kept coming and coming.

In fact, he scored an astonishing 13 goals in his first 12 appearances. Newcastle at the time seemed like they had a superstar on their hands.

Cisse had come in from Freiburg for around £8m on January 17th, 2012. However, we had to wait a couple of weeks as he was away on international duty with Senegal for the Africa Cup of Nations at the time.

When he came off the bench for his debut and scored that beautiful goal against Aston Villa for a 2-1 victory, it was the start of an exceptional run for the Senegalese striker.

This is what Papiss had to say about getting the famous number 9 shirt and the start to his Newcastle career:

“I had the confidence to take it on. A lot of people wondered who I was, where I’d come from, and why I should get this shirt. So I wanted to show the world I could wear this number. The coach had faith in me.

“OK, I didn’t do perfectly like Alan Shearer, but I tried my best to justify having that number on my back.

“I came on really early in that game against Villa, and they announced in the stadium ‘welcome to our new No9, Papiss Cisse’.

“There was this roar. I had to maintain the high standards of that number and, although I’ve still never met him, not let the Big Man (Shearer) down.

“That noise showed what it meant to the people. Scoring a winning goal was a big moment, and 13 goals in my first 12 games was a good start.”

The goals would not continue quite so easily for Cisse as he and the team struggled over the rest of his Newcastle career. However, those first few months were truly something special.

Should have got shot of Demba Ba and broke the bank for Remy instead of pandering to Ba’s demands.

Don’t believe what they are all saying about you. There is literally no personal shame attached to admitting on here that you fell hard for Corbyn’s magic grandpa schtick.
