Newcastle still have a couple of players regaining full fitness in Matt Ritchie and Florian Lejeune. Allan Saint-Maximin is also doing some individual work with the Newcastle training staff.
In that regard, the two-week international could prove beneficial in giving these players that extra time to concentrate on fitness.
However, the two-week break runs the risk of squandering the high from the Manchester United win. Matty Longstaff’s goal provided the club and its fans such a lift, it’s disappointing that the team didn’t have the opportunity of bringing that momentum straight into the next game.
Jamaal Lascelles– confident of a result at Stamford Bridge
This may not be an issue if Jamaal Lascelles has his finger accurately placed on the pulse of this team. The captain reckons that the lads are still buzzing after the Manchester United win.
Speaking to nufc.co.uk, Jamaal fired the following warning shot to Chelsea:
“They’re a young side with not much experience in there. We’ve been working really hard this week and we’re looking forward to it. It’s going to be a tough game but we do fancy our chances.
“We’re still going off the last game. We beat Man United at home and there’s no reason why we can’t beat Chelsea. We’ve still got the confidence from the last game and hopefully we can go and do the same job.”
There’s a bit of bravado in these words from our captain. That tells us that he feels the team still haven’t come down from the high of the Manchester United win.
While it is two weeks between matches, Newcastle didn’t have many players away during the break. They will have been able to put in some work together without too much of a disruption.
Of course, young Matty Longstaff was with them the past two weeks as well. Maybe he’s been banging in the goals during training and that’s why Jamaal is so confident. We wouldn’t doubt it.
