Bruce All But Confirms Start For Youngster

In his first press conference since the Manchester United victory, Steve Bruce was, of course, going to get a lot of questions on the man of the moment, Matty Longstaff.

One of the questions Steve was bound to get asked was if the 19-year-old would be able to follow his heroics at Manchester United with a start at Chelsea.

The Athletic’s Chris Waugh tweeted Bruce’s response to the question:

It looks almost certain that Matty Longstaff will get his third start as a Magpie. With Isaac Hayden out through suspension, it was always a safe assumption that would be the case.

We will likely see the same midfield pairing as the Manchester United game with Sean Longstaff keeping his place as well. With this being an away match against a very dynamic top-six side, both Jonjo Shelvey and Ki Sung-yueng are not likely to get the nods over the Longstaff brothers.

Both Sean and Matty are in negotiations with the club on new contracts. While Sean still has a few years left on the deal he signed last December, Matty’s deal runs out in the summer.

Getting the 19-year-old tied down for years to come has now become a top priority for Newcastle. Steve Bruce was also asked about the youngster’s contract negotiations during the press conference.

Lee Charnley has a lot of work to do to get this core group of players under contract. It has been a problem since the summer and also been an ongoing topic of discussion in the press.

The fact that we don’t have any players signed on new deals yet is a little frustrating. As we see it, the following players should be signed on new contracts before the January window opens to prevent any transfer window shenanigans; Fabian Schar, Isaac Hayden, Sean Longstaff, Matty Longstaff, and Martin Dubravka.

In addition to those five, we would also hope that Matt Ritchie and goalkeeper Freddie Woodman are in negotiations for new deals as well.

How Will Newcastle Do At Chelsea On Saturday?

Just want to say that the Weasel family are starting to get angry at being compared to Jail and Jib, please stop provoking them, in you want to gauge their potential anger just think of an angry wee lassie Toon supporter being chucked out of a pub for wearing a Toon top to the power of ten.

    You have been warned!

    Just a fan,
Not a very good comeback at all if it wasn’t loaded with irony, the man calling me a weasel is in continual denial that he once posted as Jeff from Benwell, quite possibly the most vile and obnoxious poster that ever existed. That to me is the height of deceit.

Just heard on 5Live footy daily saying how Bruce is decent and Rafa walked, they don’t understand the anger to and questioning of the coach.

Surely you could argue that if you’re going to Harry Potter, then you should also be allowed to go to Chelsea!!

There were quite a few on here said they were going to try get tickets, where has everyone gone? I haven’t been on enough to offend everyone to be avoiding me, have I?

I might have to meet someone from work who is a Chelsea season ticket holder at this rate!!

On the dressing rooms, loads of teams do it. There are a few in the Prem that are less to do with the furnishings, but are just much smaller, so players are crammed in more.

Will be interesting to see the team selection tomorrow. With Hayden still out, surely it has to be the Longstaffs? Hard to drop people following last week, but need to play the game, rather than just picking because we won last week.

I think the only position up for grabs would possibly be Clark/Dummet. Provided all are fit…

Can’t see Carroll starting, but I wouldn’t have any complaints if he did. As long as we don’t just revert to hitting it long if we are under pressure, as it will likely keep coming back, 9 times out of 10. I don’t mind Joelinton, he isn’t an out and out centre forward, but he is a decent player in his own right, probably just not what we need. £40million’s worth? Not on anything we have seen, but we aren’t set up to suit him, and unlikely will with what we have. I think he would work and link well alongside Muto or Gayle, but difficult to set up in a way to do that with what we have.

When I went to Brentford I was out from 12 till about ten that night, I really can’t understand why she wasn’t happy about being in London all day by herself with the kids that day 😮

It suddenly hit me again reading through the posts having been busy fo a few days; we had a world class manager who loves all things Newcastle who our genius owner let go because he was too ambitious. We now have a lower grade journeyman for a manager with no ambition and we’re going to get relegated! I just can’t get excited about the toon at the present time.
We won’t get many “Longstaff moments” this season!

To say I was disappointed when Rafa left is putting it mildly but I could fully understand the reasons. If he had been allowed to put his “project” into place he would have still been with NUFC. But sadly that was not to be and we all know who’s fault that was!!!

Again But……. We now have Steve Bruce in charge of team affairs and yes he was out of order in the way he left Sheffield Wednesday but he is the Coach of Newcastle United and it’s time to put the past in the past and move on. His links with them down the road are also in the past.

I would have gone for David Moyes who did extremely well at Everton on a tight budget (Replacing Sir Alex was always going to be a tough call eh?) but we have who we have and are in a situation that is out of our control so let’s get behind the team and move on eh?

    Come on The Toon!
