Steve Bruce has spoken after Newcastle’s fifth loss of the season. The Chronicle have published his post-match comments.
While the lads were excellent defensively against a very talented Chelsea side, they offered little to nothing going forward. Especially in the second half.
This is what Bruce said about the start to the season and the difference between the two halves at Chelsea:
“We have had a tough start, we now have a run of games against teams that are going to be in and around us.
“First half I thought we had enough quality, second we might have tired. The big thing is we have to find some goals.”
The big sticking point with the transfer business this summer was that Newcastle failed to bring in any proven goalscorers while losing their top two from last season in Salomon Rondon and Ayoze Perez.
It was a massive risk, and it’s turning out to be the Achilles heel of this team. Bruce went on to address the glaring issue of Newcastle’s impotent attack:
“Herein lies the problem. We didn’t really have big chances but we had big opportunities to make the big chance and missed the pass. Allan’s only young, big Jo’s only young and they can adapt to playing in England and getting better.
“Almiron – for all his good work – his confidence is a bit low because he hasn’t scored since he’s been here in January. However, his work rate and his effort and endeavor and what he gives the team is there for everyone to see. We just need to give him a goal.”
“When you’re a forward player you need to score and that’s what we’ve got to do.”
It’s the same old story for the front three. All work rate and effort but nothing to show for it. While we feel that Allan Saint-Maximin has added a different dimension to the attack, it’s not resulted in any more clear-cut chances.
We’ll just have to hope that the three can grow together and develop a better understanding of each other’s game. Hopefully, that will result in a few more goals.
Who Was Newcastle's Best Player 1-0 Defeat At Chelsea?

Comment #3Didn’t see the point in bringing AC when he was, most of the play was in our half and all he would have been was another big defender.
ASM winded himself cos he was tracking back and defending too much, we need more midfield possession to give these players a chance to do anything and Chelsea were stronger than us in midfield so it was mainly backs to the wall stuff. Which we actually did do OK but the goal was an inevitability, 1-0 was in fact a good result, could have been worse.

Comment #6That’s what you get for accepting a job at a club you clearly haven’t been following so did not know what was needed, then accepting the transfer of Joelinton for FORTY MILLION!!!!!! to play as a centre forward when he is clearly not a striker.
Suck it up mate cos you deserve it for not vetoing the deal and demanding a striker instead.

We sold Perez because he could see we had no ambition whereas he did. The same as many players before him. And we didn’t sell Rondon, we had him on loan.. we didn’t BUY him because Ashly has a ridiculously flawed transfer policy that meant we didn’t buy our top scorer because he was 29 years old.

Comment #13I feel a bit sorry for Bruce…. Hold on hold on… Who can blame him for taking us on… I know he’s not the level of manager/coach we had hoped for but without belittling him it’s a bit like the fighter who knows he’s got just one more chance at the title, and if he’s successful he’s a god in these parts, if not, we’ll.. he give it his best shot
I know it doesn’t help us much but for God’s sake we had 1 of the top 5 managers in the world guiding us…. As long as jabba the c##t own us it’s heartbrake all the way.
Stay away from SJP until we get our club back…. PLEASE…

Comment #20We sold our top scorers, the club’s recruitment team replaced them with attacking midfielders who have never been prolific.
The blame lies within the club’s transfer policy which is implemented by Ashley.

Comment #22Strange isn’t it up to the 15 games or so of last season Perez got little much except grief. Up to then most would have taken half the 30 million we got for him and taken him to the station, and I include myself in this, now we lament him a our long lost striker,,,funny old world.
I,m not sure what happened with Rondon, did he want the permanent move or with Rafa gone was the lure of the Chinese money to great…..did Rafa “tap him up” who knows.

Comment #24We’ve scored four goals which I think is the lowest in all four division’s, as mactoon said, who’d have honestly thought that selling your three top goal scorers and replacing them with two blokes that scored nine between them the previous season was a good idea?

Comment #30He knows he doesn’t have a clue how to run a football club but as long as he can spend enough to cover the mistakes he makes in order to stay in the premiership and maintain worldwide advertising for his main business interest Sports Direct he couldn’t care less.
That’s why he will never sell up regardless of every takeover bid that miraculously appears during every transfer window. Don’t you think that if you wanted to put an offer in for a club you would do it during the summer break when you know the club will be in the premiership next season and not while the club’s premiership status is uncertain???

Jib,
Just wondering what you analysis on the match is
The Longstaffs with their energy blocked off the central areas
forcing Chelsea to play out wide where Willems/ASM and Yedlin/Almiron
more than held their own.
The plan to bring on Carroll vs their tiring central CB’s would have worked fine
but Wilian had one of those games , and Marcos Alonso got lucky.
I thought a draw was a knocking bet.
Shit Happens – that’s footy
