We can’t fault the performance this afternoon. The result, though disappointing, was a fair one as Chelsea proved too much in the second half.
The hosts had 72% possession and outshot Newcastle 16-5. Martin Dubravka was able to keep out 7 of their 8 attempts on target. But sometimes all it takes is that one goal especially when the Magpies have such trouble creating any of their own.
It was by no means a howler by Dubravka but Alonso’s goal was a disappointing one to concede. Especially since the ex-Sunderland man had been hounded all afternoon by the Newcastle traveling fans.
The defensive performance was outstanding with some crucial blocks made by Clark, Schar, and Yedlin. They maintained their shape while being under constant attack.
The problem this season is going to be goals. Newcastle failed to threaten Chelsea in the slightest. While the counter-attacks were at times exhilarating they all ended in whimpers.
It’s just 5 goals in 9 games and that has to improve somehow. We can’t fault the effort but execution in the final third needs to improve drastically.
It was a big improvement on the last away match at Leicester City. Chelsea just had a bit too much this afternoon.
